Henry Board Moving Ahead With Sewer System Plans |
The Henry Mayor and Board of Aldermen voted last
Tuesday night to proceed with plans for a new sewer
system in the city.
Mayor Joe Qualls informed the board the city has
received a $500,000 Community Development Block
Grant (CDBG) to help pay for the project. He had
received a letter from Gov. Don Sundquist's office
approving the grant.
The board voted, 4-0, to proceed with the sewer
system plan. Alderman Debbie Flood was absent.
The board also voted to replace the police
department's patrol car with a used 2000 model car.
The cost to the city will be $14,750. Equipment from
the old car will be transferred to the new car.
In other action at Tuesday's meeting:
• New ordinances were put into place regulating fire
hydrants in the city. Hydrants had been updated
drastically since the previous ordinances were drawn
up, necessitating the changes in the regulations.
• The deed for a thin strip of land being sold by
the city to Nathan Replogle is being processed. That
land includes the old city hall site.
• The board voted to begin a reserve officer
program. The officers would be strictly volunteers,
with no pay being provided by the city and no extra
liability being incurred by the city.
• Money received for easement of gas lines and a
check from damages done to Henry Civic Center will
be put into a certificate of deposit.
That $2,000 will be used to repair a service truck
or go toward the purchase of a new one.
• During the public comment portion of the meeting,
Jerry Bierly requested that trees be cut on
Henry-Mansfield Road by the new water tower.
Bierly said the trees obstruct the view of drivers.
The board plans to study the request.

Jake's Women To Be Presented October 18-21 |
|

Jennifer Stewart will
portray "Maggie" and Dr. James Scruton will play
"Jake" in the upcoming comedy/drama production at
Bouldin Auditorium in the Dickie Fine Arts Center.
The Bethel College Theatre's next production,
Jake's women, is a different type of play than
recent works performed by the company. It is a
sophisticated comedy/drama by Neil Simon that takes
a hard look at contemporary life through the eyes of
Jake and the women in his life.
Performance dates are October 18-20 at 7:00 p.m.,
plus a Sunday afternoon performance on October 21 at
2:00 p.m. in Bouldin Auditorium of the Dickey Fine
Arts Center. Tickets are $5 for adults while Bethel
students, faculty and staff may view the performance
without cost.
Jake is a novelist, who is more successful with
fiction than life.
While facing a marital crisis he daydreams about
the women, past and present, who have affected his
life. These women include a first wife, his
daughter, his sister, an analyst, his current wife,
and a prospective third wife. The audience will be
regaled with a funny yet touching journey as a
middle-aged Jake struggles to stabilize his present
and future while letting go of the past.
Characters will be played by Dr. James Scruton,
Jennifer Stewart, Robin Garrett, Amber Shields,
Jackie Cook, Kristen Salvog, Hannah Scruton, Ashley
Hancock and Ashley McDaniel.
The group has also been invited to perform this play
during the Kennedy Center/American College Theatre
Festival in Jackson. That performance will be
between October 24-27, with Bethel's performance
time to be announced later.
