Eva Uldean Fry
LAVINIA: Services for Eva Uldean Fry, 77, were on
Thursday, September 6 at 10:30 a.m. at Bodkin Funeral Home
in Milan. Burial was in the Lavinia Cemetery.
Mrs. Fry, a homemaker, died Tuesday, September 4 at Milan
General Hospital of heart failure. She was a member of the
Lavinia Baptist Church.
Survivors include her husband, Charles H. Fry of Lavinia;
one daughter, Charlotte Cole of Milan; two sons, William
Fry of Jackson and Allen Fry of Atwood; three sisters,
Mattie Sue Roe of Cedar Grove and Virginia Keel of
Collegedale; three brothers, John Frank Duncan of Cedar
Grove, Billy Warren Duncan of Huntingdon, and Clinton
Duncan of Lakeland, Florida; thirteen grandchildren and
fifteen great-grandchildren.
Richard "Frog" Swafford
BRUCETON: Services for Richard "Frog" Swafford, 71,
were at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, September 6 at Bruceton
Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Terry Bradshaw officiating.
Burial was n New Prospect Cemetery.
Mr. Swafford, a retired mechanic for CSX Railroad, passed
away on Tuesday, September 4 at St. Thomas Hospital in
Nashville of lung cancer.
He was born May 13, 1930 in Rutherford County to the late
James Raymond and Vera May Parker Swafford. He was a
member of the Bruceton First Baptist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Ruth Swafford; three
daughters, Rickie Barnes, Pat Walters and Kristie King,
all of Bruceton; three sons, Mike Swafford of Memphis and
Ike Swafford and Tony Swafford, both of Bruceton; one
sister, Gayle Wallace of Murfreesboro; one brother, Jimmy
Swafford of Nashville; eight grandchildren and two
great-grandchildren.
Amy Nell McCain
GLEASON: Funeral services fro Amie Nell McCain, 88,
were at 3:00 p.m., Tuesday, September 4 at Tumbling Creek
Baptist Church with Rev. Gene Price officiating. Interment
was at Tumbling Creek Cemetery.
Mrs. McCain, a homemaker, died Sunday, September 2 at
Jackson Madison County General Hospital.
She was born, March 19, 1913 in Gleason to the late James
Lucien and Gertrude Mitchell Shaw. She was also preceded
in death by her husband, Robert Worth McCain.
She is survived by a daughter, Ann Brooks of Dresden, two
grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Mildred Smith
ATWOOD: Services for Mildred Smith, 86, were at 2:00
p.m., Saturday, September 8 at First Baptist Church in
Atwood,with Bro. Kenneth Roberts officiating. Interment
was in the McLemoresville Cemetery.
Mrs. Smith, a homemaker, died on Thursday, September 6 at
Methodist Hospital in McKenzie. She was a member of the
First Baptist Church in Atwood.
She was born October 30, 1914 to the late Lillie Kimcannon
and Samuel Howard Hill. She was also preceded in death by
her husband, Vernon Smith and a sister, Thelma Younger.
Survivors include a son, Larry Smith of Benton, Louisiana;
two brothers, Aubray Hill of Huntingdon and S. Rayborn
Hill of Roanoke, Virginia; two grandchildren and four
great-grandchildren.
Josephine Reeves
MCLEMORESVILLE: Services for Josephine Reeves, 81,
will be at 1:00 p.m., Wednesday, September 12 at the
Cumberland Presbyterian Church in McLemoresville. Burial
will be in the church cemetery.
Mrs. Reeves died Friday, September 7 at National
Healthcare in Milan.
Survivors include four sisters, Juanita Whitthorne of
Montrose, Michigan, Ruth Deshong of Mt. Morris, Michigan,
Lurlean Murphy and Helen Belew, both of McLemoresville and
a brother, Archie Belew of Flint, Michigan.
Her husband, William "Will" Reeves preceded her in death.
Rawls Funeral Home in Paris is in charge of the
arrangements.
Visitation will be from 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, until
services at 1:00 p.m. at the church.
Leonard W. Bynum
GLEASON: Services for Leonard W. Bynum, 94, were at
10:00 a.m., Monday, September 10 at Gallimore Funeral Home
with Rev. Jim Pinnell and Rev. Mike Walker officiating.
Burial was in Mt. Zion Cemetery.
Mr. Bynum, a retired farmer, died Friday, September 7 at
Methodist Volunteer Hospital of heart failure.
He was a member of Gleason Cumberland Presbyterian Church
and Gleason Masonic Lodge #330.
Survivors include his wife, Sally P. Bynum; two sons,
Leonard Bynum, Jr. of Huntsville, Alabama and Ronald Bynum
of Gurley, Alabama.
His parents George W. and Ida Bobbitt Bynum preceded him
in death.
Ricky A. Bateman
MCKENZIE: Memorial services for Ricky Bateman, 53,
were held at 1:00 p.m., Monday, September 3 at the Kingdom
Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses in McKenzie. Mr. Bateman died
September 1 at Methodist Lebonheur Hospital in Jackson of
cancer.
Mr. Bateman was born March 18, 1948 in Salem, Indiana, to
the late Merle Bateman and June Bateman Lowe, who
survives. He was baptized as one of Jehovah's Witnesses in
1972. He was employed at Smurfit-Stone Container
Corporation in Humboldt.
He is survived by his wife, Lois, whom he married May 2,
1970 in Barstow, California; two daughters, Rebecca Sands
and Jessie Sawyers, and a son, Jachin Bateman, all of
McKenzie; three brothers, Raymond, Stanley and Mark
Bateman and a sister, Tammy Bateman, all of Indiana; his
mother, June Lowe, also of Indiana and five grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his father, Merle Bateman and
one grandchild.
Herbert Ray Taylor
BRUCETON: Services for Herbert Ray Taylor, 90, were at
2:00 p.m., Sunday, September 9 at Bruceton Funeral Home
Chapel with Rev. Billy Joe Hilliard officiating. Burial
was in Prospect Cemetery in Hollow Rock.
Mr. Taylor, a retired farmer, died Friday, September 7 at
his residence.
He was born February 4, 1911 in Decatur County to the late
Pink and Rhonda Melinda Collett Taylor. He was a member of
Prospect Baptist Church in Decatur County.
He was preceded in deathy by his wife, Mabra B. Taylor.
Survivors include two daughters, Sue Cole and Jo
Patterson, both of Bruceton, a sister, Artie Pratt of
Paris; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Thomas Wingo Hillsman
JACKSON: Funeral services for Thomas Wingo Hillsman,
95, were at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, September 5 at Englewood
Baptist Church with Rev. Jimmy Dickson, Dr. Hyuran
Barefoot and Dr. Phillip Jett officiating. Burial followed
in Ridgecrest Cemetery with Lawrence-Sorensen Funeral Home
in charge of the arrangements.
Mr. Hillsman, a former resident of Trezevant, died
Saturday evening, September 1 at Jackson-Madison County
General Hospital.
He was born in Trezevant, the son of the late James
Reddick and Esther Wingo Hillsman. He was a graduate of
University of Tennessee at Knoxville with a B. S. degree
in agricultural education, taught vocational agriculture
for three years in Trezevant, was assistant county agent
in Madison County for almost four years and then served as
the Madison County County Agent for 30 years.
Since retirement, he has engaged in farming, construction,
land sales and golf course construction. He was past
president of the Jackson Rotary Club and former Deacon
Board Chairman of the First Baptist Church in Jackson. Mr.
Hillsman joined Englewood Baptist Church in 1990 and
served as a deacon and Sunday School teacher.
Survivors include his wife of 68 years, Naomi B. Hillsman;
one sister, Helen Hillsman of Memphis; and several nieces
and nephews.
Irene Price
MCLEMORESVILLE: Services for Irene Price, 72, were at
1:00, Tuesday, September 11 at New Reedy Creek Baptist
Church with the Rev. Kenneth J. Hillsman officiating.
Burial was in the church cemetery.
Mrs. Price died Friday, September 7 at her home in
McLemoresville of a homicide.
She was born August 21, 1929 in Carroll County to the late
Tanzy Jordan and Virdell Hillsman. She was a member of New
Reedy Creek Baptist Church.
Survivors include four children, Constance Simmons and
Jimmy Price, both of McLemoresville, Robert Price of
McKenzie and Vivian Lykes of Atwood; four brothers, Judson
Hillsman of McLemoreville, Daniel Hillsman of Greenwood,
South Carolina, William D. Hillsman and Hoarce Hillsman,
both of Chicago, Illinois; two sisters, Laura Duke of
Atwood and Joyce Pate of Chicago, Illinois; ten
grandchildren; ten great-granchildren, several nieces,
nephews and four foster children.
Her husband, Lawrence Lee Price preceded her in death.
Bond Funeral Home in Milan was in charge of the
arrangements.
Addie Laurine Dunn
GLEASON: Services for Addie Laurine Dunn, 77, will be
held at Gleason First Baptist Church on Wednesday,
September 12 at 2:30 p.m., with Gene Price officiating.
Burial will be in Hopewell Cemetery in Gleason.
Mrs. Dunn died Monday, September 10.
She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Gleason.
She was also a licensed cosmetician, business owner and a
retired school teacher. She was a graduate of Bethel
College and Past Worthy Matron of Easter Star. She was
also a member of Delta Kappa Gamma Society.
She is survived by two daughters, Beverly Orr and Julia D.
Rich, both of Gleason; two sisters, Katie Clark of Gleason
and Ruby Cozart of McKenzie; a brother, Douglas Nanney of
Henry; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her father, L. D. Miller and
mother, Ila C. Miller Nanney; her stepfather, Bill Nanney;
her sister, Mary Lee Blaylock; three brothers, Vorce
Miller, Charles Nanney and Jamie Nanney and her husband,
Archie Vernon Dunn.
Visitation will be from 3:00 until 9:00 p.m., Tuesday at
First Baptist Church in Gleason.
Williams Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
Roland Benjamin Peterson
MCKENZIE: Graveside services for Roland Benjamin
"Pete" Peterson, 67, will be on Wednesday, September 12 at
2:00 p.m. at Everetts Chapel Cemetery.
Mr. Peterson, owner of Consultant Quality Control, died
Sunday, September 9 at Jackson-Madison County General
Hospital of cancer.
He is survived by his wife, Martha Deaton Peterson of
McKenzie.
Gallimore Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
