SCHOOL NEWS FOR WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 29, 2001

  McKenzie Elementary School News

by Max Batchelor

Since the school year began, MES has been lucky to have two Taiwanese teachers to volunteer their time.  Ambo and May were exchange students studying at Bethel College. Although there was a bit of a language barrier, we found that we were able to understand them as they assisted in our classes.  Ambo worked with Mrs. Darlene Bowlin and Mr. Matt McCaleb in P. E. classes while May worked in the second grade. They have now returned to Taiwan where they are elementary school teachers, but we will always remember them.

The McKenzie Lion's Club held their annual vision screening this past week.  Over 250 students received eye examinations and some were found to need glasses.  This is a valuable service to our school and we appreciate the Lion's Club for their time and talents.

Mrs. Patti Witty's fourth grade class had a special treat this week.  Since they were reading a story about cowboys called "A Visit to Grandpa", our principal, Mrs. Charlene Alsup visited their class to read a book about cowboys in Argentina.

Fourth grade Math classes have been studying the millions place value and estimation.  As a treat that was really a lesson, we got to have popcorn.  We each estimated the number of kernels we received.  We then actually counted them to see how close we came to being right.  Then all of the fourth grade added their totals together.  We were searching for a million because our math book tells about a school that found over a million kernels with a similar exercise.  It's fun and exciting to learn and get a treat at the same time!

In other news, Cub Scout Pack #78 held a walk through at MES on Wednesday, August 24 at 8:30 A.M.  This was a part of their membership drive.  A sign up was held on Thursday, August 23 at 7:00 P.M.  If you are interested in joining, you can contact Mr. David Mitchell at 352-4936.

A very important job reserved for two fourth graders is the responsibility of raising, lowering, and caring for the American flag that is flown in front of MES.  This year's flag attendants are Jake Johnson and Brent Klinzing.  They are doing a great job and we really appreciate it.

As a reminder, there will be no school next Monday, September 3 because of the Labor Day holiday.

Finally, this week's announcer was none other than my co-editor, Mary Netheway.  Mary did a great job each morning of leading us in the Pledge of Allegiance, moment of silence, and Character Counts quotes taken from teachers, staff, and students.  Our Character Counts focus is showing respect for others.  A man named G. D. Boardman once wrote, "The law of the harvest is to reap more than you sow.  Sow an act and you reap a habit.  Sow a habit and you reap a character.  Sow a character AND YOU REAP A DESTINY."  That's why it's important for us to use our manners and actions to show respect for others.

NOTES FROM THE HIGH SCHOOL

by McKenzie High School Principal, Terry Howell

We have recently rechecked our immunization records for our seniors.  By law those students must have two doses of MMR vaccine in addition to the other required shots.  Many seniors are not in compliance with this state standard.  I have talked with all 40 seniors who have not returned documentation that they have completed this required immunization.  Those affected seniors will have until August 31 to present proof of immunization to remain in school.  I do think that most of these students have simply failed to present proper documentation of these shots.

Several of our local churches have invited the high school football team to attend services on Sunday for the next few weeks.  Coach Comer, his staff, and players last year went to six area churches for spiritual fulfillment.  The activity, of course, is completely voluntary.  Approximately 60-75% of the players last year attended the scheduled services.  Coach Comer and his staff are to be commended for combining the life lessons that these young men learn in football with the spiritual and religious experiences one gains in worship.  No player is coerced into attendance.  Everything in this regard is voluntary.  Our school has an active Fellowship of Christian Athletes, and many of these young men are active in its operation.

Congratulations to two of our students who entered the Carroll County Fairest of the Fair Beauty Revue last week.  Monica Mayberry was chosen as 2nd Maid and Becky Toombs earned 1st Maid honors.  Monica is the junior daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Mitchell Mayberry.  Becky is the junior daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ronnie Toombs.

The high school golf team began their schedule this week with a meet against Huntingdon and Clarksburg.  The girls split between the two, beating Clarksburg and losing to Huntingdon.  The boys' team won both matches, and sophomore John French was the medallist with a score of 38.  Members of the girls' golf team include Ashley Brooks, Ashley Creasy, Lindsey Jones, and Rachel Pruiett.  Boys' team members are Mark Anderson, Jason Arnold, Andrew Bateman, John French, J.C. Johnsonius, and Richard Ross.  The teams and school are indebted to Carroll Lake Golf Course and the Cunningham family for the use of the golf course.

The football team began its season with a 31-21 victory over a much improved Obion County Rebel squad.  After falling quickly behind, our team countered with two touchdowns in the second quarter to trail 15-13 at halftime.  After intermission, the home team tacked on three second-half scores to seal the victory.  Our senior-laden team did not wilt under the adversity of falling behind, but displayed the confidence of a team that can face obstacles and overcome them.  Obion County posed an excellent test early in the season, and they appear ready to advance their program in a winning way.  This week the Rebels travel to Camden for an important 6-2A contest with the Lions.  Our freshman/sophomore team also had an impressive win last week defeating Lexington 35-20.  This year we do play a freshman/sophomore and B-team schedule with the teams playing five and six games respectively.  These games are excellent means of maintaining continuity in a program and providing game experience for our younger players.  We do have schedules at the school and encourage everyone to support our varsity and junior varsity teams.

The junior class has begun its annual magazine sales drive.  Juniors will be selling magazines sponsored by Q.S.P./Reader's Digest from now until September 11.  Those interested in purchasing or renewing magazine subscriptions should contact any junior or call the school at 352-2133.  Each junior is expected to sell at least seven subscriptions to fund the Junior-Senior Prom and pay for senior class expenses.

School day pictures for students in grades 9-11 will be Wednesday, September 5, beginning at 8:00 A.M.  We will again use the pre-pay envelopes for students to chose the photograph plan and bring the money on the day of the shoot.  We will send envelopes home on Friday, August 31, for students and parents to discuss the option they wish to choose.  Regardless if a student chooses to purchase a package or not, everyone will have a photograph taken on this day.

On Thursday, September 6, we will host our fall Parent-Teacher Conference from 3:30 - 7:00 P.M. following our regular school day.  Teachers will prepare a progress report for every student in their class.  Parents may get these progress reports on the day of the Parent-Teacher Conference and discuss with teachers strategies to improve grades or conduct.  Those parents unable to attend the conference may get progress reports from their students who will get them on Friday.  Please mark your calendar and take an active part in your child's education.  Interest for these types of events should not diminish, but increase at the high school level as students near graduation and have to make decisions regarding post-secondary education or employment.

Also, on September 5, we will distribute 874 Forms to all students in our building.  These federal forms keep track of those students whose parents work on federal property or in federal jobs or who households are part of federal housing.  Our school stands to gain significantly by listing all those who fit into this category.  We must, however, have a form for every student in our building so please answer and return as soon as possible.  The survey takes no longer than 2-3 minutes.

School will not be in session on Monday, September 3.  We will observe Labor Day.  School will resume on Tuesday, September 4.
