Well, lots of things are happening at MES. Totals are in from the PTO sponsored Fun Run. It was very successful. Winners will be announced and prizes awarded at a school-wide assembly on December 19th. Thanks to all of the parents who came and counted laps and pledge money and to all of you who supported this annual effort.

K-Kids is sponsoring a canned food drive. All canned goods will be picked up on December 19th. The class with the most canned goods will be treated to a pizza party. Currently, Mrs. Charlotte Verner's class is in the lead with Mrs. Marcia Webb's class in a close second. All of the canned goods will stay in the McKenzie area. The school goal is to collect 2,000 cans.

The Citizen of the Month program has been rescheduled for December 14, 2001. The program will be held in the MES gym at 8:10 A.M.

Congratulations are in order for MES Kindergarten teacher, Ms. Amy Roney. Ms. Amy has been chosen by WSMV-TV Channel 4 in Nashville as an "Apple for the Teacher" award winner. A film crew from Channel 4 visited MES to tape Ms. Amy and her class. She will be a part of their broadcast on January 22nd from 5-77:30 A.M. and 5-5:30P.M. We're proud of you, Ms. Amy!

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas! Annual Christmas parties are scheduled for Tuesday, December 18th at 2 P.M. Dismissal for Christmas break will be at 11:00 A.M. on Wednesday, December 19th. HO, HO, HO!

In other news, Mrs. Lorey Basford's 3rd grade class read a story about a blind person. The class was then blindfolded and led by Mrs. Lorey through the school in order to experience what it would be like to be blind.

Also, Mrs. Charlotte Verner's 3rd grade class read a book called Flat Stanley about a boy who had been flattened by an unfortunate bulletin board accident. He had great fun being flat, so the class made flat versions of themselves. They then sent their flat people to friends and relatives all over the United States. The flat people were taken to tourist attractions and other places of interest in that area. When they returned, the class studied the areas their flat people had traveled. Some of the places the flat people visited were Chattanooga, Gatlinburg, North Carolina, Alabama, New Mexico, Texas, Kentucky, and Hawaii.

Last week's announcer was Shaquise Long. Shaquise did an excellent job of leading the students in the Pledge of Allegiance and morning announcements. Thanks, Shaquise!

Until next time . . .

  Notes from the High School

The Class Composite Project that I began in the early fall has grown in size from the first day it began. In the middle of September, I sent letters to representatives in each class that has a composite in storage in our library. The plan was to purchase two display wall units and re-photograph all of our composites to display them in our front lobby. We have already received enough money to purchase one unit and have enough money pledged to buy the second unit. As I tell each class representative, the cost of re-photographing each class with an appropriate backing in the size that is needed is $100 per class. Many, many classes have responded and contributed their share plus much more. I have not heard from other classes yet. The project has put me in contact with alumni all over the United States and even a few from foreign countries by way of e-mail! We are still a bit short of reaching our necessary total to complete the project. We need approximately $2500-3000 more for the re-photography. I feel confident that we can raise that if our alumni realize this project is under way. A $10-20 contribution by several members of a class would go a long way toward meeting this shortfall. I ask all alumni of McKenzie High School to consider a gift to their alma mater so that we can move forward in making this project a success. As I have tried to do with each contributor, I have tried to send a thank-you note for each contributor's support of our school and what it has meant to all of us in our formative years. If anyone has questions, please call me at 731-352-7413 or e-mail me at howellt@k12tn.net or write the school at 23292 Highway 22, McKenzie, TN 38201.

The band recital will be this Thursday at 7:00 P.M. at the high school gymnasium. The middle school and high school bands will present an assortment of Christmas music to get everyone into the holiday spirit. The Christmas Concert has been a mainstay of the band department for over 25 years. Also featured will be the high school chorus which will highlight both individuals, duets, and the class as a whole. No admission will be charged for this recital which is open to the public.

Because this article will be my last until after Christmas break, I want to explain our exam schedule for next week. We will administer exams on Tuesday, December 18 for First (1st) and Fourth (4th) Blocks. Tuesday will be a full day and the tests will be taken during the assigned class time. On Wednesday, December 19, we will have our Second (2nd) and Third (3rd) Block tests. Wednesday is a half-day for students and teachers. The Second Block tests will be from 8:00 - 9:30, and the Third Block will be from 9:30 - 11:05. All students are expected to be in class on Tuesday, December 18. Students exempt from ALL exams may leave after homeroom on this day provided they have a note from their parents. They must sign out with their homeroom teacher. Students exempt from their Second and Third Block tests do not have to attend school on December 19. General guidelines for the exam include the following: students who are absent on exam day will need a doctor's statement to make up the missed exam. All business and/or obligations in the library, office, cafeteria, or other areas must be cleared before taking exams. Students must be on time for the exam. Test make-up will be given after the return from Christmas break. Another point to keep in mind is that is that the last day for attending the vocational route will be December 18. Students earn an exemption by passing the class and having no more than one absence from the classes. Teachers will review these procedures in class this week and next to familiarize students with what to do and when to do it.

Project Graduation has already been busy doing fundraisers for their end-of-the-year drug and alcohol-free celebration following graduation. This year's group has tried to minimize sales in favor of fun activities and services. One special event planned is the Great Pretender Show that is sponsored by Ron Arnold of Gleason. Project Graduation plans to hold this show the second weekend in February at the Dickey Fine Arts Center on the campus of Bethel College. The group will have a Great Pretender's organization meeting on Monday, December 17, at 5:30 P.M. in the Theater at the high school. All seniors and their parents are requested to be there. Even if students are not on stage, they can help with marketing, ticket sales, etc. With hard work and students cooperation, this project can earn a great deal toward their goal for the "first class reunion."

The basketball team had a busy week of action with three games played. On Tuesday, the Lady Rebels and Rebels traveled to Stewart County to challenge their girls' and boys' teams. The Lady Rebels rebounded from a slow start to post their first win of the season. Strong defense and a stifling press defeated the opposition. In the boys' game, the Rebels of McKenzie suffered their first loss of the season. The game was played evenly and tight with neither team able to get a significant advantage. Our boys did manage to close within four in the last few minutes before the home team sealed the victory. On Thursday, the Lady Rebels pounded the Clarksburg Lady Rockets 81-29. After gaining a 15-20 point halftime lead, Coach Ridley substituted the B-team the second half. Those young players took advantage of the playing time to stretch the lead. In boys' action, the Rebels seemed to be in control at the end of the third quarter with an eight-point lead. They increased the lead to 18 points by the middle of the fourth quarter before Clarksburg staged a furious come back. The Rockets played a swarming man-to-man, full-court press defense to close to within 2 with a minute to go. A Rebel turnover gave the Rockets an opportunity to tie, but they failed to capitalize as the Rebels held on to win by three points. On Saturday, our teams traveled to West Carroll to take on the War Eagles. The teams suffered two defeats to the West Carroll teams as both teams had trouble with shooting and turnovers.

This week the Rebels play at home against Huntingdon on Tuesday (12/11), at Riverside on Friday (12/14), and at home against Big Sandy on Saturday (12/15). During Christmas, the girls will play in the Martin Westview Christmas Tournament on December 27-29. The boys will play in the Huntingdon Christmas Tournament on the same days.

As I mentioned previously, school will dismiss for the holidays on December 19 at 11:05 A.M. Teachers will return on January 2 for an administrative day. Students will return on Thursday, January 3, to begin the second term.

I wish everyone a safe, enjoyable, and meaningful holiday season.
