James Stewart Promoted to Dean of Student Development |
Bethel College is pleased to announce the appointment
of James T. Stewart, Sr. as Dean of Student
Development. This position will expand Mr. Stewart's
duties beyond those he successfully shouldered as Dean
of Student Life. In addition to the supervision of
Student Life, which includes Residence Hall Life,
Tutoring and Counseling, Student Activities, Career
Counseling, Student Government, Security, and Student
Discipline, the Dean of Student Development will
administratively oversee the areas of Admissions,
Financial Aid, Religious Life and Athletics.
Academic Dean Maribeth McGuire, commenting upon Mr.
Stewart's performance as Dean of Student Life, noted
that he is first and foremost a team builder."He
does things in such a way," Dean McGuire said, "that
people are respected and included in the process."
Bethel President Robert Prosser observed, "Mr. Stewart
has a rich variety of experiences that make him a
natural choice to provide administrative oversight to
this important area of the life of Bethel College. He
has experience as a successful Enrollment Management
Director. He has been an Athletic Director and a
coach. He has served as Dean of Students both at
Bethel and Mary Holmes College in West Point,
Mississippi before coming to Bethel. He knows and
appreciates church related higher education as a
student in a church related college and as an
administrator.
Mr. Stewart received his Bachelor's Degree in
Social Studies Composite from the University of the
Ozarks and his Master's of Education Degree in
Guidance and Counseling with an emphasis on student
personnel services from Mississippi State University.
He has served as the West Point, Mississippi PTA
president, a member of the Bryan Library Board of
Directors, a member of the Drug Research Education
Association of Mississippi, a ten-year volunteer
soccer coach with the West Point Recreation
Department, Chairman of the West Point Housing
Authority Board of Commissioners, and president of the
Clay County Boys and Girls Club.
One thing Mr. Stewart will have to give up as he
assumes his new administrative responsibilities is
being head coach of the Wildcat men's soccer team.
This is especially difficult to comtemplate this year,
as he believes this year's team should be a conference
contender and may even have possibilities for national
recognition. Mr. Stewart's teams have always been
known for their performance on and off the field. His
1996 team was the National Junior College Academic
Team of the Year. This year's team will bear his
recruiting stamp but his support of the team will be
from the bleachers this year instead of the bench.

Weakley County Schools Kindergarten Orientation |
Weakley County Schools will have Kindergarten
Parent-Student Orientation in each of the elementary
schools on August 13-14. The orientations will allow
parents and students to become acquainted with the
classroom and the procedures for attending public
school on a daily basis.
Parents of students who have registered to attend
kindergarten in the fall will be contacted by teachers
prior to the opening of school to schedule a time to
attend the orientation. Parents are urged to make
every effort to be a part of the special kindergarten
orientation in their school. Topics to be discussed at
these orientations will include the schedule for
alternate attendance, materials and supplies that each
student will need, and other information pertinent to
a successful kindergarten experience.
The Weakley County School System recognizes that in
order to be successful, parental involvement is
essential. Therefore, it is critical that every
kindergarten student be represented by a parent or
guardian at the Kindergarten Parent-Student
Orientation.
Parents who have a child of kindergarten age (five
years old by September 30, 2001) who have not been
formally registered for kindergarten in the Weakley
County Schools should contact their school as soon as
possible to discuss the registration process.
At the time of the fall 2001 registration, all
kindergarten parents must bring the following to
school: Birth certificate, proof of proper
immunization (DPT-4; Polio-4; MMR-2 and HBV-3), Social
Security number, Physical Examination (must be
obtained after January 1, 2001) and proof of residence
with a parent or a legal guardian.
