Bethel Professor Prepares to Publish Poetry Collection
  
Dr. James Scruton, Professor of English and Chair of the Humanities Division at Bethel College, has compiled a collection of his poems that will be published in February 2002 by Edwin Mellen Publishing of New York. Edwin Mellen Publishing is a small press company, specializing in academic and prestigious works in many fields, including poetry. "Thrift" is composed of works contained in the manuscript that was a 1996 National Poetry Series Finalist.

"Thrift" is the title poem for this collection of poetry, the second published collection of poetry by Dr. Scruton. According to Dr. Scruton, "This collection of poems has to do with saving things that losses through time force people to save." "Thrift" refers to both a type of flower, a ground cover flower, as well as the more traditional definition.

Dr. Scruton's first collection of poems, "After the Children's Hour," was published ten years ago. His works have been published in many magazines including, "Poetry." Besides his notoriety as a poet, Dr. Scruton is also in demand as a speaker and lecturer. During the summer of 2000, he lectured at the University of Mimerick in Ireland. He aslo gave a lecture on baseball and literature at Indiana State University. Dr. Scruton also lends his acting talents to the Bethel College Theatre Departmetn whenever possible. Last fall, he was a featured player in the production of "Lend Me a Tenor."

James Scruton is married to Sharon Scruton, an assistant professor of English at Bethel. They have three children, daughters Audrey and Hannah and son Conor.
   

Local Residents Named to Freed-Hardeman Honor List
  
Two local residents have been named to the Dean's List of Freed-Hardeman University for the spring 2001 semester.

Receiving honors were Andy Young and Rachel Roberts, both of McKenzie. Young, a junior agricultural business major, is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Bobby Young and Roberts, a sophomore education major, is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jim Roberts. To be named to the FHU Dean's List, a full-time student must maintain a 3.3 grade point average for that semester.

Freed-Hardeman University is a private, residential, liberal arts university associated with the churches of Christ and has an enrollment of almost 2,000 students. The purpose of the university is to provide every student an undergraduate education permeated with Christian values. It is dedicated to instilling moral and spiritual values, maintaining academic excellence and encouraging service in a friendly and supportive environment.
 
Fall Registration Begins at Jackson State
  
Jackson State Community College is open for fall registration July 16-August 3. Students can begin to study for a career in Office Systems Technology, Hospitality Management, Industrial Technology...or get a head start on a bachelor's degree through the University Parallel program.

Jackson State offices are open for registration from 8:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m, Monday through Friday. Extended hours are available on July 16, 18, 31 and August 2 from 5:30-6:30 p.m. Students can also register on the web at www.jscc.cc.tn.us.
