McKenzie Elementary School appreciates all the parents,
students and members of the community for coming out to
the Fall Festival. Many people helped make the festival
a success. We also appreciate the many businesses and
people who made donations or helped out. It was a great
day for the school. K-Kids collected pull tabs for the
Ronald McDonald House in Memphis. The Ronald McDonald
House is a "home away from home" for children who come
to Memphis for treatment at St. Jude Children's Research
Hospital. The classes at McKenzie Elementary competed to
see who could bring in the most pull tabs. The winning
class was Mrs. Lorey Basford's class which brought in 12
pounds of pull tabs. They will be treated to an ice
cream party. The total amount brought in for McKenzie
Elementary was 84 pounds. K-Kids next project will be
collecting canned goods. This is scheduled to begin in
November.
Another activity for November will be the Fun Run
sponsored by the PTO. Students gather pledges and see
who can walk or run the most laps during P. E. class.
Students receive prizes and recognition for their
participation as well as healthy, physical activity.
In other news, the Rebel Singers will be performing
for the Rotary Club Tuesday, November 13 during their
regular meeting. The Rebel Singers will also be
performing for the Business Expo in Huntingdon on
November 15. They will perform again for the PTO meeting
on November 19 at 7:00 p.m. All parents are invited to
attend this meeting.
This week MES practiced some safety drills. These
drills are practiced regularly every year to help
prepare students in case of an emergency or crisis.
Teachers spoke with students ahead of time to explain
what to expect and how to respond.
Mrs. Jones' kindergarten class has been learning
about the letter "P" and its sound. One of our mom's,
Jennifer Tedder, is manager of Domino's Pizza and
brought pizza for the students. Another mom, Regina
Travis brought Pumpkin bags with treats to celebrate the
study of pumpkins. Then Mr. David Jarrett provided each
student with a pencil. These parents all help students
to remember the letter "P."
Mrs. Jill Warren's class received a special card of
thanks this week. They received a personal card of
thanks from Mayor Rudy Giuliani of New York thanking the
class for the cards they made and sent to him the day
after the September 11 attack. |

This Friday, November 9, the Student Council will be
sponsoring a program to honor our veterans. Our featured
speaker will be Mr. David Jarrett. Reading by MMS
Students and performances by our music classes will
accompany Mr. Jarrett. The program will begin at 8:30
a.m. All veterans are invited to attend. We will
complete our program in time for the veterans to also
attend the one planned at the high school. The
fifth-grade students at McKenzie Middle School have just
completed an extensive study of the native Americans in
Mrs. Archer's social studies classes. The student
studied the different regions of the United States and
the various tribes living within that region. They were
then asked to select a tribe, write a research paper and
do a project or poster. Mrs. Davis, the school
librarian, taught the students to use the various
reference books and computers to locate information
about their tribe. The projects and posters were
completed at home.
The projects were put on display in the library for
students and parents to view.
We appreciated our active and involved PTO at MMS,
monetary prizes were awarded to the winners and
honorable mentions: Winners were Kelsey Cooper (first),
Matthew Epperson and Brennan McCain (second), Andrew
Webb and Richard Candler (third), Harris Laughrey
(fourth). Honorable mentions went to Elizabeth Russell
and Allison Owen, Brent Rhodes, John David Forrest,
Corey Ballentine, Shay Barksdale, Ben Rogers, Jacob
Fussell, Heather Martin and Meggan Beames, Andrew
Semirosum, Sarah Edwards, Luke Anderson, Sabrina
Richardson, Kelsey Chandler, and Elizabeth Bugg.
Both of our basketball teams have begun their regular
seasons and are undefeated. We have wins over
Greenfield, Clarksburg, Inman and West Carroll. This
week we played at Dresden on Tuesday and will be at
Milan on Thursday. Come out and support the teams.
The following Beta Club members helped with the Rotary
Auction on Saturday, November 3: Nathan Masullo, Alex
Masullo, Kia Bell, Joey Walker, John Kermit Laughrey,
Laura Beth Fowler, Heather Huffman, Jana Barham, Kelsey
Schweitzer, Carson Rider, Courtney Creasy, Caleb Owen,
Rachel Chandler, Sarah Owen and Craig Broadbent.
The Beta Club is sponsoring a coat drive during the
month of November. If you have coats that you or your
family have outgrown or no longer use, please donate
them to this worthwhile project. They must be clean and
in good condition. Coats of all sizes are needed. Turn
them in to Mrs. Archer, Mrs. Green, Mrs. Peters, or Mrs.
Ognibene. We appreciate you participation. |

Last Friday the Rebels continued their undefeated season
by beating Fairview High School by a score of 24-8.
Playing in monsoon-like weather, the Rebels raced to a
12-0 first quarter lead and held on for the victory as
the rain poured in torrential sheets. The Rebels did
manage to score four touchdowns to the YellowJackets'
one and did outrush their opponents by a two to one
margin. This week the Rebels again play at home against
the Loretto Mustangs. Loretto defeated the third place
finisher in our region, Riverside High School. McKenzie
is the sole survivor in Region 6-AA. Loretto is the
second place finisher in Region 5-AA. Advanced tickets
will be sold for $6.00 beginning Wednesday. Tickets may
be purchased at the gate for $6.00 as set by the TSSAA.
Game time will be at 7:00 P.M. with the gate opening at
5:00 P.M.
We recently completed the taping and judging for the
annual Voice of Democracy Script-Writing Contest.
Approximately 25 students submitted a script in Ms. Zia
McKennie's English IV class with 10 finalist chosen from
this group. The 10 finalists recorded their scripts at
Mr. Argel Reynold's studio to get a quality recording.
After student taping, the judges come to the studio to
judge the winners in this 3-5 minute script built on the
topic, Reaching Out To America's Future. Students chosen
as the winners were Bruce Anderson, First Place; Jeremy
Sydnor, Second Place and Taylor Holland, Third Place.
Those students will receive special recognition at the
Voice of Democracy Banquet later along with other
members of the top ten. Bruce's script will be sent for
judging at the district level. Congratulations to them
and Ms. McKennie for the work she did in supervising
this program at the local level.
The Covenant Players will perform for our students on
Thursday, November 8. This group is an international
repertory theater group that presents skits dealing with
such diverse topics as family communication and
substance abuse, peer pressure and self-image, conflict
resolution, and character education. To optimize the
effectiveness of the program, the group will perform for
each grade level from 8:00 - 11:05. Covenant Players has
a repertoire of over 800 plays. Their real target is to
establish communication with young people and to get
them to reflect upon the various themes that they
present. The basic philosophy is that drama provides an
arena for students and the dramatists to create a common
bond. At this point, the student audience can empathize
with the character, the theme, and the experiences
presented on stage to have effective communication. Time
after each skit is used to discuss with the players what
the audience has seen and experienced.
On Friday, November 9, the high school will observe
Veterans' Day with its annual program at 10:00 A.M. in
the gym. All veterans are invited to be our special
guests, and anyone from the community is welcome to
attend this special assembly. Veterans should meet in
the back lobby at 9:30 A.M. on Friday to sign in with
members of the Student Council and receive directions on
seating. All veterans and their spouses are special
guests for lunch in the cafeteria after the program. The
program itself will feature the posting of the flag by
the McKenzie National Guard; musical performances by
Matthew Holt, Jadrea Allen, Kimberly Gaskins, and the
McKenzie High School band; introduction of the veterans;
a guest speaker; and the Veteran Memorial Service. The
guest speaker will be Lewis Moncrief (see article
elsewhere). We welcome everyone to this program that
will emphasize patriotism, loyalty, and responsibility.
Seniors may place their order for graduation supplies
and materials on Wednesday, November 7. The Balfour
representative will be here to take orders at 7:15 A.M.
The only necessity is the purchase of a diploma and
diploma cover. The rest of the supplies and materials is
the choice of the students and their parents. Graduation
supplies and materials can cost hundreds of dollars or
be as little as the $35.40 needed for the diploma and
its cover. Balfour generally asks for a $60.00 deposit.
The school provides this contact as a service and
receives no compensation in this transaction.
The McKenzie Band Boosters completed a successful
fundraiser with their annual E.W. James BBQ Supper. The
band played during the supper while the boosters
prepared a delicious barbeque plate for patrons of the
band. The Band Boosters is an extremely active adjunct
to the school. They perform a number of responsibilities
including fundraising, operating the concession stand
for football games, chaperoning trips, and countless
other tasks. Joel Washburn as president and Diane Barton
as treasurer provide leadership for this group that
includes many, many hard-working parents. The band
program will be highlighted at the McKenzie Rotary Club
on November 6. Mr. Breeden along with field commander
Amanda Mansfield, percussion leader Ben Martin, and
color guard leader Bertha Robles will address the club
at their 12:00 P.M. meeting at Higg's Restaurant. The
band and members of the chorus will perform also at the
Veterans' Day program on November 9 at 10:00 A.M. at the
school. We welcome everyone to this program of music,
patriotism, and special orators.
Progress reports will be issued on Wednesday, November
14. These progress reports mark the end of the 131/2
week grading period. We have approximately 25 days left
after that for the first semester. Teachers have been
busy calling parents or writing letters to parents to
inform them of students who are failing or are not doing
well in regard to grades or conduct. Parents may
telephone the office to set up conferences with teachers
or with the guidance counselor. Students may earn a
maximum of four credits this semester before their
schedule changes at Christmas. With the term ending
soon, students who are marginal academically need to
make a concentrated effort to do well, complete work,
study for exams, and take homework to study for the next
day's classes.
I have recently sent home letters to parents of students
who owe for Time. Students who have missed more than six
days in a class are subject to making up that time after
school. I will announce those times and days at the end
of each week for the schedule of the following week.
This week's schedule is Monday through Thursday from
3:15 to 4:45 and Saturday from 8:00 to 11:00. Students
who do not clear their time by Christmas will not
receive credit in class(es) in which the time has not
been cleared. As we near the end of the semester, Time
for Time would be an excellent place for students to
study and prepare for end of year exams. |
