On Tuesday night, October 16, the McKenzie
Elementary PTO met. The
meeting opened with the Pledge
of Allegiance led by Casey
Gunter and Angel Hubble. The
Rebel Singers sang "America"
and "I Can Make a Difference."
The first grade presented the
program by singing Halloween
songs. The PTO is sponsoring a
Fall Festival October 27 at
the school from 11:00
a.m.-2:00 p.m. There will be
pony rides, a band featuring
Miss Jenny Lynn, face
painting, a silent auction, a
costume contest, and many
other activities. Come on out
for family fun. Have lunch
while you are here.
The second Citizen of the
Month Program was held Friday,
October 19. Many parents and
friends attended to see their
child honored for being a good
citizen of McKenzie Elementary
School.
Next week is Red Ribbon Week
at MES. Mrs. Beckie Smith,
guidance counselor, is in
charge of the activities. On
Tuesday students will have
"Team Shirt Day," Wednesday
will be "Sock it to Drugs,"
Thursday is "Stomp Out Drugs"
day and Friday will be "Put a
Cap on Drugs" day. These
activities are to help
encourage students to remain
drug free all their lives.
In other news, Mrs. Tenia's
second grade class has been
studying nouns this week in
language. They enjoyed making
stories using pictures cut
from magazines of a person, a
place or a thing. They used
the pictures for the main
character, setting and details
in their stories.
In kindergarten news, Greg
Barker from Tennessee Fish and
Wildlife Agency came to talk
to the classes about bears and
hibernation. The kindergarten
classes have been studying a
unit called "Time to Sleep."
They have been discussing
animals that hibernate. Mr.
Barker brought many different
hides for the children to look
at and feel. Mr. Barker's
daughter, Ashley is in
kindergarten.
The third grade has been
working hard on improving our
language skills with the
computer program Perfect Copy
in the computer lab. With
Perfect Copy, the student must
proofread an article for
errors and correct it. The
students gain points when they
have found all the errors and
mastered the skill.
Third grade is also improving
math skills with Accelerated
Math. The student completes
the practice assignment and
the computer grades the
assignment. The computer
informs the teacher which
students need extra help on
specific skills.
Mrs. Charlotte Verner and Mrs.
Peggy Chappell are the third
grade tutors in language arts
and math.

NOTES FROM THE HIGH SCHOOL |
| |
|
By McKenzie High School Principal, Terry
Howell |

The girls cross-country team competed last
week at Obion County in the Best of the West meet. As a
team, the girls finished 7th out of 13 teams. The top
runner for the girls was sophomore Amber King with a time
of 24:00. Amber was followed by teammates Robyn Winkler,
Julie Smith, Naomi Street and Lucy Snead. On October 26,
the team will compete in the regional meet at the
Agricultural Center in Jackson at 3:00 P.M. Qualifiers at
this meet advance to the state level. Good luck to them as
they represent our school.
The band will travel to Murfreesboro to Riverdale High
School to compete in the Division I competition on
Saturday, October 27. The band will perform at 2:00 P.M.
and will continue as far as their scores and performances
allow them to. The band is riding the crest of an
impressive outing at Brighton High School on October 13.
They cancelled plans to perform at Cheatham County last
Saturday, opting instead to practice many hours at Rebel
Stadium in preparation for the competition. Good luck to
them as they represent our school at the state level.
This week we will take the math and language T-CAP
Competency tests for those students who failed either test
previously. The math portion will be administered on
Wednesday, October 24, and the language portion will be
the following day. All students currently in high school
with the exception of this year's freshmen must pass this
exam to receive a regular diploma. We have had a
competency class this term to address these people who
have had difficulty with the test. In the spring, we will
administer the test again to those who fail to obtain
mastery.
Members of the Spanish Club will take a field trip to
Clarksville to see a play performed in Spanish. The group
will go to Clarksville this Friday for a performance and
explanation of the play. The intent is to allow students
to experience first hand the application of the language
in another setting. Sponsor Carol Brewster will travel
with about 30 of our students for this exciting
experience.
The Freshman/Sophomore team and the B-team both finished
their successful seasons last week. The B-team ended the
season with a hard fought loss to Huntingdon by a 14-7
margin. The B-team ended the season with a 4-1 record. The
Freshman/Sophomore team completed a 4-1 campaign also with
a home victory against Trenton Peabody by a 20-0 score.
Success at this level bodes well for the future. These
players have received some great game experience and will
need it next year as we graduate 17 seniors from the
varsity.
The varsity team ended Week 9 with a convincing victory
over the youthful Lexington Tigers. Playing evenly through
the first quarter and a half, the Rebels finally pulled
away with two second quarter touchdowns that deflated the
Tigers' hopes for an upset. The Rebels added three more
touchdowns in the second half to extend the lead to 41-7
which was the final margin of victory. This week the team
will play its final regular season gave at home against
Huntingdon. This game will determine the champion of
Region 6-AA. Regardless of the outcome of the game, we
will host a First Round TSSAA game the following Friday.
To accommodate people, we will sell advanced tickets for
this Friday's game to avoid waiting in line. The advanced
tickets will cost $5.00 and may be purchased at the high
school office after Wednesday and up to 3:00 P.M. on
Friday. The gates for the game will not open until 5:00
P.M.
Members of the senior class have the opportunity to attend
the U.T.M. Regional College Fair on Tuesday, October 30.
Seniors must submit parental consent and a fee of $3.00 to
attend this activity during the day. The expense will
cover the cost of bus transportation to this event.
Representatives for many of the West Tennessee, state, and
regional college and universities will be present. Also
present will be vocational/technical schools and the
military. This experience may be an excellent way for
students to narrow the list of possibilities for future
choices as they will have direct contact with the
representatives in an informal question and answer session
as they go from one display area to another.
The high school band will have its annual E.W. James BBQ
supper on Tuesday, October 30. Cost of the tickets is
$5.00 and may be purchased from any band member or from
members of the Band Booster Club. This fundraiser helps to
finance equipment, materials, and other needed things for
our band. I encourage you to help the band in this
fundraiser.
A few dates that parents and students may want to put on
their calendars are these: The McEachern photographers
will do school retakes on Thursday, November 1. Students
in grades 9-11 who did not have their picture taken will
do so at this time. They may also purchase a package using
the pre-pay method. We will pass envelopes out closer to
the date. Seniors will meet with the Balfour
representatives on Friday, November 2, to discuss
graduation supplies and materials. The representative will
return on Wednesday, November 7, to take orders for
seniors. A $60.00 deposit is required at this time. The
school provides this as a service to purchase these
materials. Students will only need to purchase a cap and
gown and diploma and diploma cover.
