Rebels Scrimmage Martin Westview, Crockett County |
|
By Bobby Young
This past Friday afternoon, the Martin Westview campus
was alive with football. The Crockett County
Cavaliers, McKenzie Rebels and Westview Chargers were
involved in a three-way scrimmage. Fans came out to
see what the area teams had to offer.
With the annual jamborees only a couple of weeks away,
coaching staffs are going full force trying to fend
their personnel and plays to make their respective
teams successful.
Coach P. A. Pratt's Crocket County crew was not as
large as Westview or McKenzie, but they made up the
lack of size with great team speed. The Cavaliers are
Class AAA.
Coach Dan Coady's Chargers have dropped from Class AAA
down to Region 5-AA. The Chargers boast a gigantic
offensive line with a couple of players over the 300
pound plateau and the rest in the 260-275 pound range.
All West Tennessee Rafael Hill, only a junior, has 4.4
speed and the Chargers defense is a quick attacking
group of young men.
The scrimmage began with McKenzie on offense against
Crockett County. The Rebels quickly made the
opportunity count. Quarterback Taylor Holland rolled
out and found fellow senior David Duncan who skipped
by the Cavalier corner and raced some forty yards for
a McKenzie score.
Later in the scrimmage, with McKenzie on defense, a
deep pass found the Rebel secondary out of position.
Rebel safety Duncan recovered and ran the receiver
down, but was unable to tackle the Cavalier ball
carrier as he crossed the goal line.

McKenzie first teamers finished the scrimmage with
Crockett County in a 6-6 deadlock. Later in the
scrimmage, with both teams substitutes gaining playing
time, the Rebels were able to grind out huge chunks of
yardage. Matt Merrick scored for the Rebels. Shane
Barksdale and Cody Cook also ground out sizeable
yardage for the McKenzie team. Rebel defenders
Jonathan Adkisson, Jazz Taylor, Eric Gilbert, Mitchell
Hall, Matt Jones, Howard Nolen, Merrick, Josh Stenberg
and Haywood Cunningham fought the Chargers hard but
the greedy Hill ran on the Rebels right defensive side
and went virtually untouched for a 36-yard score.
Defensively, McKenzie was able to recover a couple of
fumbles and overall played hard. Westview came out on
top, 7-0.
Tuesday afternoon, McKenzie took on the Henry County
Patriots at Patriot Field at 5:00 p.m. This Friday
afternoon, Jackson Southside's Hawks will come to
Rebel Field for a scrimmage to begin at 6:00 p.m.
