McKenzie, Hollow Rock-Bruceton Light Up Jamboree as Rebels Gain Victory

By Pat Cole

The McKenzie Rebels and Hollow Rock-Bruceton Central Tigers' "game" concluded the annual jamboree in Huntingdon last Friday night with the most interesting contest of the night. The Tigers lit up the scoreboard first with a field goal, followed by a touchdown by the Rebels, another by the Tigers and finally with only seconds remaining, a second touchdown by the Rebels for the victory.

Rebels 15-Tigers 10

The Tigers had the first offensive series of the night and drove down the field, despite the Rebels defensive efforts. All state tailback Adrian Jamison (who finished the night with over 100 yards rushing) took the ball first and quickly picked up a first down on the initial run. Haywood Cunningham made the stop for the Rebels. After a motion penalty on McKenzie, Jonte Willis took the ball left and picked up a second first down at the 46 yard line. Rick Sturdivant was hit hard by Brannon Milton and the ball was loose, but was quickly recovered after a loss of seven yards. On second down, Jamison took the ball left and reached the Rebel 25 yard line before being taken down by David Duncan. J. Willis again took the ball and reached the seven before he was brought down by Cunningham. At that point, the Rebel defense was ready to stop the drive. Jamison was held to a yard by Milton and then to a gain of three by Matt Merrick. Sturdivant held and was held to a loss of two by Jonathan Adkisson. The Tigers elected to attempt the field goal by senior Adam Olds. The 22-yard attempt was good to give the Tigers a 3-0 lead with 5:03 remaining in the first quarter's action.

The Rebels then took the ball at their own 30 yard line. Shiron Perkins picked up six yards before the stop by J. Willis. Quarterback Taylor Holland held and moved the ball to the 46 yard line for the first down before he was stopped by Keith McGee, Josh Edwards and John Castleman. Brannon Millton then took the handoff and was held to a gain of one by McGee, Grant Hollingsworth, Jamison and J. Willis. A pass, intended for Duncan was almost intercepted by Castleman, but was incomplete. A second pass to Mitchell Hall was tipped by John Jordan, leaving the Rebels punting on fourth and nine. Daniel Duncan's punt was shanked out at the 33 yard line of the Tigers.

J. Willis took the ball left and picked up a first down at the 46 yard line, followed by a one yard gain by Jamison, who was stopped by Milton. With 1:28 remaining in the first quarter, the Tigers took a time-out. Sturdivant completed a pass to J. Willis with Howard Nolen on the stop. Jamison was held for no gain by Merrick, Milton, Eric Gilbert and Jose Becerra. Sturdivant held and picked up the first down before the stop by Milton at the 35 as the quarter concluded.

Following some confusion as the second period began, with officials initially returning possession to the Rebels, despite the fact the Tigers were in a successful drive as the first quarter concluded and a small discussion with Huntingdon head Coach Mike Mansfield, the final period began. However, having moved the chains, the ball remained at the 35, giving the Tigers five ungained yards. The Rebels stopped the Tigers and took over at their own 30 yard line with 8:35 remaining to play.

A ten-play drive resulted in the first touchdown of the game for the Rebels. Milton took the ball up the middle for eight yards before he was brought down by Edwards. Edwards then stopped Holland, who moved left for a first down at the Tiger 49. A pass to Shiron Perkins resulted in another first down at the 30. What appeared to be a fumble was recovered by the Rebels for a gain of one and then Perkins was held to a loss of four by J. Willis. On fourth and 13, Holland reached back and passed the ball successfully to Duncan who was stopped at the four yard line by Wortham. Two plays later, after a loss of four, Perkins moved into the end zone for the first TD, giving the Rebels a 6-3 lead with 5:08 remaining to play. Josh Stenberg kicked the PAT successfully and the Rebels led 7-3.

The Tigers took the ball at their own 30 yard line and moved it over a nine-play drive to pay dirt. Jamison took the ball and moved left, gaining the Rebel 38 before he was stopped by Carone Tharpe. J. Willis picked up four yards before he was brought down by Nolen and Merrick. Sturdivant was sacked by Demerick Diggs for a loss of seven and then Jamison moved for a gain of five before he was stopped by Duncan. Sturdivant passed the ball to Patrick Willis for the first down, and a penalty on the Rebels moved the ball to the 15 yard line with 3:31 remaining in the game. J. Willis moved up the middle for two with the stop by Kent Ozment and Gilbert. Jamison moved up the middle for no gain as Cunningham and Adkisson held. On third down, a pass to P. Willis was low and incomplete and on fourth down, Sturdivant then passed again to P. Willis who reached up and pulled in the ball for the touchdown with 2:00 remaining in the game. Olds kicked the PAT good and the Tigers now led 10-7.

The Rebels wasted no time in retaking the lead. On first down, a pass to Tharpe was good for a first down at the Tiger 20 yard line. Jordan made the tackle to stop the touchdown. Perkins then took the ball for another first down with Edwards on the tackle. Perkins was held to a gain of eight. A motion penalty on the Rebels moved the ball back to the seven yard line and then Perkins moved for a gain of two on second and seven. Jason Pierpoint, Matt Forrest and Greg Forrest made the tackle. Holland held for a gain of three with J. Willis on the tackle. On fourth and two, Stenberg took the ball into the end zone and then kicked the PAT to give the Rebels a 14-10 lead with only 16.5 remaining in the game.

Taking the ball at their own 30 yard line, Jamison took the ball right and reached the Rebel 37 yard line before he was stopped by Duncan. A pass, intended for Jordan was tipped by Justin Adkisson. A final pass attempt with 2.0 seconds remaining was also incomplete, giving the Rebels the 14-10 victory.

Mustangs 19-Patriots 6

Huntingdon's Mustangs dominated the Henry County Patriots in the first stanza of the jamboree. The Patriots gained the first offensive possession and managed a single first down before punting to the Stangs. Matt Lange, Alex Jordan, Robert Weathers, and John Taylor led the defensive effort.
The Stangs wasted little time in putting the first score on the board. On first down, Weathers took the ball from the Stangs 46 for a gain of three and then a pass from quarterback Jacob Smothers to Keanon McKinnie brought a 51 yard run for the touchdown with 6:27 remaining in the first quarter. The PAT attempt by Marc Brown was just wide right and Huntingdon held a 6-0 lead.

Again, Henry County began at their own 30 yard line. A handoff to Marricus Kendall resulted in a good run left. However, a penalty moved the ball back to first and eight. Chris Kinley then took the ball for a gain of two before he was brought down by Kenneth Hillsman and Lange. A pass was completed to Daniel Caperton with the stop by Tommy French after a first down at the Mustang 49. The Patriots then gained another run by Marquis Dumis and had first down at the 37 before Don Morgan made the tackle.

McKinnie held the gain to three before Kinley moved to the Stangs 19 yard line and the stop by French. At that point, the Stangs shut the Patriots down. Hillsman and Kirk Butler held the gain to one and a fumble was recovered by Hillsman for the Mustangs at their own 25 yard line.

Terrance Bell moved right for a gain of three while Kenneth Porter moved for gains of six and 11 yards and the first down at the Stangs 45. Weathers moved for four, a fumble resulted in the loss of one and a motion penalty moved the ball back five additional yards. On third and 12, Bell moved for a gain of nine, but the Mustangs elected to punt. Brian Nellett punted the ball and the Patriots took over at their own 24 as the first quarter ended. The second quarter began with Hillsman making the tackle after no gain. Jordan also held for no gain and then a host of Stangs led by Taylor, Hillsman and Trevor Sanders held the gain to two yards. A bad snap had punter Nolan Poteete ultimately covering the ball at the Henry County 15 yard line.

Weathers took the ball left for a first down at the three yard line. McKinnie then took the ball into the end zone for the touchdown with 8:20 remaining in the game. McKinnie then took the ball for a two-point conversion attempt and was held by a host of Patriots. Huntingdon led 12-0.

Henry County began their third offensive possession at their own 30 yard line. Poteete took the ball right and dodged two tackles before he was stopped by French. At their own 44, the Patriots Atkins took the ball for a gain of five, with Hillsman and Butler on the stop. Hillsman also stopped the second down run a foot shy of the first down. Butler and Lange held at the Mustang 45. On first down, the Patriots fumbled the ball and Jordan recovered for the Stangs.

With 6:23 remaining Bell took the ball right and into the end zone for a 56 yard run. Brown's PAT was good and the Stangs led 19-0 with 6:07 remaining in the game.

Henry County's next possession was also without a score. Taking the ball at their own 30, they moved right and gained the Mustangs 25 before the stop by Weathers. On a fourth down pass attempt, the ball was intercepted by Huntingdon's Zack Davis. The Stangs then took over at their own 19 yard line with 3:32 remaining. With Adam Parish as quarterback, the Stangs were penalized five yards. Porter then moved left and picked up a first down at the Patriots 43. French moved with the ball, but a motion penalty moved the ball back five yards. Morgan then moved right and picked up six yards. Parish was then sacked on a pass attempt. On third and 18, Porter moved eight and was held for a loss of two. On fourth down, the punt by Nellett was blocked and recovered by Henry County who took over at the Mustangs 40 yard line. A pass from Poteete to Kendall was good for the touchdown with 38.3 remaining in the game. The PAT by Chris Haynes was wide left and Huntingdon now led 19-6. The Mustangs held control for the final seconds of the game.

Chargers 26-Tigers 0

Martin Westview dominated the third set of quarters, ultimately winning the game 26-0. Lexington took the first offensive possession, but managed only four yards in that effort. The Chargers then took over at their own 28 after the punt and quickly made their way to the end zone. Rafael Hill took the ball right and managed to gain a first down. Quarterback P. R. Wilson then slipped on the first down for a loss of seven. On second down however, Cody Waggener took the ball left and picked up a first down at the Lexington 36. Hill gained five and after an incomplete pass, took the ball again and zig zagged his way up the middle and into the end zone for the first score of the game. With 6:41 remaining in the first quarter, C. W. West kicked the PAT good, giving Westview a 7-0 lead.

Lexington fumbled the ball and Westview then quickly made their second score. Wilson passed the ball to Andrew Jennings for first down at the four yard line and then Hill again made his way into the end zone to lead 13-0 with 6:11 remaining in the first quarter. The PAT was no good, leaving Westview with a 13-0 lead.

Lexington gained some ground before having to punt the ball. Westview took over at their own 27 and quickly found pay dirt again. Gant Rooks took the ball left for 55 yards. On first down Wilson passed to Travis Davidson for the first down at the three yard line. Hill moved left and over with 1:17 remaining in the first quarter. The PAT was good and Westview led 20-0.

The final touchdown came with 5:49 remaining in the game. A pass was intercepted by Charger Jon Vallee who made his way into the end zone and scored for the Chargers. The PAT hit the upright and bounced wide, leaving the Chargers with a 26-0 lead and ultimately the victory.

Lions 12-War Eagles 0

The third set of quarters was between the West Carroll War Eagles and the Camden Lions. The War Eagles were without three starters, seniors Drew Cunningham, who had surgery the week before and Richie Cannon, who had surgery that morning for pre-season injuries and sophomore Adam Bond. Senior Don Bukovi was playing limited action, also having been injured in the pre-season.

Camden had the first offensive and took to the air on first down. The pass was incomplete. On second down a quarterback sack resulted in a fumble that was recovered by Brain Forrest. West Carroll then took the ball at the 28 yard line. A fumble on first down was quickly recovered after a gain of two. James Terry carried for a gain of one. Jimmy Cherry then carried the ball, but was stopped by Camden for a loss of six. A pass was incomplete to Nick Appleton and Camden took with 8:07 remaining in the first quarter at their own 32.

The War Eagles held the Lions to four downs, with defensive efforts by Terry, Shane Depriest, Forrest and Brooks Blackketter. After holding to a loss of one, the Lions punted the ball and West Carroll took over at their own 44.

Terry moved right, but was held to a loss of one. Cherry was then held for a loss of 10 and Terry picked up nine before the punt by Dustin Church. Philip Gentile led the defensive effort and after gaining a first down, a fumble was recovered by the War Eagles.

The War Eagles began their possession at their own 30 yard line. Terry moved up the middle for no gain, followed Depriest who was held for a loss of two. A penalty then moved the ball back another five yards. A pass to Justin Smith was incomplete and the War Eagles attempted to punt, but a bad snap led to Church covering the ball at the nine yard line.

Camden took over at the nine yard line with James Whitmore on the stop on first down. Nathan Leonard took the ball into the end zone for the touchdown with 32.6 remaining in the first quarter. The kick was wide and Camden led 6-0.

Terry took the ball up the middle to conclude the first quarter. After an incomplete pass attempt to Don Bukovi, Cherry completed one to Blake Abercrombie for the first down at the 42 yard line. Terry then moved for a gain of one. A second pass was completed by Cherry to Depriest at the Camden 45 for first down. James Whitemore moved right for a slight loss and three passes were incomplete.

Camden took over at their own 46 yard line. The War Eagles held the gain to only five yards on the next possession and took over with 3:14 remaining in the game.

An incomplete pass led to Gentile taking the ball left for a gain of four. An incomplete pass ultimately led to the punt. Camden's Jonathan Hayes then took the ball 42 yards for the touchdown with 1:58 remaining. The PAT was no good and Camden led 12-0.

West Carroll then managed to gain some yardage, but was unable to score as time ran out.
