West Carroll Wins Pair Over McKenzie

The games were moved up to begin at 3:00 p.m. Saturday afternoon, allowing West
Carroll and McKenzie prep fans to also enjoy the Tennessee Vols championship game at 7:00 p.m. For McKenzie fans both ventures were disappointing as both McKenzie teams lost to the host and the Vols went down against LSU.

In the afternoon's first game, the Lady Rebels were unable to score throughout the first half, with only eight total points to their credit at intermission while the Lady War Eagles had 21 total points. McKenzie went on an 11-0 run as the second half began to narrow the margin to 23-20. They were unable to narrow the margin any lower.

The first period, Jessica Murphy led all scorers with five points, followed by Brittany Baker, April Patterson and Kathleen Strayhorn with two each for the Lady War Eagles.

Freshman Renee Crawley was one of five substitutions made midway through the first quarter and led the Lady Rebel scoring for the first half as she scored four quick points. After one, West Carroll led 11-5. The second quarter, the Lady Rebels were unable to produce as many points and trailed 21-8 at intermission. Strayhorn led West Carroll with four, followed by Baker, Patterson and Rachel Arnold with two each. Toombs scored one bucket from the field for two and Sarah Hartz added one at the line for McKenzie.

The second half began well for the Lady Rebels, but they were only able to narrow the margin so far before the Lady War Eagles began to score again and maintain a slight lead. Lindsey Jones hit two shots from three-point range to lead McKenzie with six, followed by Kristin Wiggins with five, Meagan Bowlin with three and Amanda Barnes and Julie Smith with two each. Strayhorn led West Carroll with five, followed by Murphy with four and Baker with two. After three, West Carroll led 32-26. The final period, Jones hit three shots from three-point range to lead McKenzie with nine, followed by Wiggins with five, Toombs and Barnes with two each and Bowlin with one. Baker led West Carroll with nine, followed by Strayhorn with four, Ruth Forrest and Murphy with two each and Patterson with one. West Carroll won the game, 50-45.

In the night's second game, the Rebels and War Eagles had a close first period, but in the second quarter, the Rebels were held to only two points and the War Eagles gained a sizeable margin, which resulted in a big victory.

The first quarter, Rory Lacey hit two shots from three-point range and Bryan Huffman hit one as they scored six and three points respectively. Johnathon Adkisson added four for the Rebels. John Taylor and Titus Taylor each hit three pointers as they led the War Eagles with seven and five points respectively. Freshman Xavier Webb came off the bench to score four and Jimmy Mobley added two. After one, West Carroll led 18-13. The second period, Marcus Lykes and J. Taylor led the War Eagles with four points, followed by T. Taylor and Webb with two each. Brandon Trull scored two at the line for the Rebels. At intermission, West Carroll led 30-15.

The second half, the Rebels scored much better in the third quarter, but the War Eagles improved their margin slightly. In the fourth quarter, West Carroll outscored McKenzie 16-4 for the victory. The third quarter, Lacey led the Rebels with four, followed by Adkisson with three points, Huffman with a three-pointer, and Trull and David Duncan with two each. Webb led the War Eagles with eight, followed by T. Taylor with two three-pointers for six, J. Taylor with two and Mobley with one.

After three, West Carroll led 47-29. The final quarter, the Rebels were held to two points each from Daniel Duncan and Clint Anderson while Mobley and Lykes led the War Eagles with six each and Webb and J. Taylor added two each. West Carroll won the game, 63-33.

Lady Rebels Pick Up Pair of Victories; Rebels Win at Clarksburg

McKenzie's Lady Rebels picked up a pair of victories last week as they traveled
to Stewart County Tuesday night and Clarksburg on Thursday.

In the Tuesday game, the Lady Rebels had three players in double figures with Becky Toombs leading the team with 14 total points, followed by Amanda Barnes with 12 and Meagan Bowlin with 11. Lindsey Jones hit a three-pointer while Julie Smith scored two and Kristin Wiggins and Jasmine McMackins scored one each. After trailing 13-11 after one and 19-17 at intermission, the Lady Rebels took control in the third period and led 31-23 after three and won the game 44-31.

In the night's second game, the Rebels lost a close game to the home team. Rory
Lacey had two three-point shots and Johnathon Adkisson one in the 53-49 loss. Stewart led 12-10 after one, 26-22 at intermission and 39-36 after three. Lacey led the Rebels with 18 total points while Brandon Trull added 15, Adkisson scored eight, Bryan Huffman added four and Chris Stephens and John Howell scored two each.

Thursday night, the Rebels and Lady Rebels both picked up victories with all players seeing playing time in the opening game between the Lady Rebels and Lady Rockets of Clarksburg. Substitutions led to freshman Renee Crawley scoring a game high 13 points in the third quarter as she led her team with 15 total points. Toombs added 11 and Jones hit three shots from three-point range as she scored nine. Wiggins, Sarah Hartz and Brittany Russell scored eight each, Kim Gaskins added six, Mallory Brandon and Bowlin scored four each and Smith added two. After leading 22-7 at the end of one and 31-14 at intermission, the Lady Rebels improved their margin to 56-21 after three and won the game 76-29.

The night's second game was a barnburner between the Rebels and the Rockets. The Rebels led at the conclusion of each period, but by small numbers each quarter.

The first quarter, McKenzie took an 11-10 lead with Lacey connected on two three-pointers for the Rebels while Adkisson added three at the line and John French scored two. Gurley and Nick Cobb each hit a three-pointer for the Rockets while Holiday and Willis scored two each. The second period, Trull led all scorers with nine for the Rebels while Lacey contributed four additional points. Gurley and N. Cobb scored five each, with each connecting on three-pointers. Willis and Todd added two each as the game was tied at 24 at intermission.

The second half, the Rebels regained the lead in the third quarter as the Rockets were held to only five total points, all at the line. Gurley scored four and Scott had one. The Rebels were led by Trull with seven while Ryan Drewry scored four and Lacey had two at the line. After three, McKenzie led 37-29. The final period, Holiday led all scorers with 15 total points, including a three-pointer for the Rockets, followed by Ryan Cobb with four, N. Cobb with a three-pointer and Boyd with two.

Lacey hit a three-pointer and led the Rebels with nine, followed by David Duncan with five, Trull with three and Adkisson with two. McKenzie won the game, 56-53.

  McKenzie Football Players Named Honorable Mention All Region 6-AA  
 
Jonathon Gaskins, Bruce Anderson, Carone Tharpe, Chris Stephens and Nathan Young were recently honored by being named to the Honorable Mention Squad in Region 6-AA. These Rebel players were part of the history making 2001 squad which went undefeated for 13 games before losing to Westview in the semi-final round of the state playoffs.

Huntingdon Football Mustangs Make Honorable Mention in Region 6-AA

Kenneth Hillsman, Taylor Milam Josh Pruitt, Matt Lange and Terrence Bell were all named to the Region 6-AA Honorable Mention Squad in 2001. The Mustangs fell in the first round of the playoffs this year.
