War Eagles Win First Regional Game in Battle With Bulldogs
By Pat Cole

West Carroll's War Eagles met a determined Gleason Bulldog squad in regional action last Friday night in Atwood at the West Carroll War Eagle Field. The two teams faced an uphill battle as rain threatened, yet completed the game with only a brief shower to interrupt otherwise excellent field conditions.

The War Eagles celebrated their 2001 homecoming in pre-game ceremonies with senior Ashley Anders crowned queen. Members of her court were freshman Anna Kelly, sophomore Brandi Argo, junior Lauren Batholomew and senior Kayla Gilliam.

The game began with Bulldog Bradley Maddox kicking the ball to Adam Bond who returned it to his own 21 yard line before he was stopped by Ricky Torres and Mikey Petty. Shane Depriest took the ball up the middle for first down at the 47 with the stop by Petty. James Terry then took the ball to the Gleason 36 before he was stopped by Blake Dinning and P. J. Leach. After a five-yard penalty against the Dawgs for encroachment, Depriest moved left for first down at the 21 before he was brought down by Josh Copeland and David Forrest. Bond then moved right and into the end zone with Petty attempting the stop at the 10:07 mark. Quarterback Jimmy Cherry then passed the ball to Kelly Keen for the two-point conversion and the War Eagles took an 8-0 lead.

Kevin Taylor kicked the ball short to Leach who was stopped by James Whitmore at the Gleason 40 yard line. A pass, intended for Aaron Vaughn was incomplete. Leach took the ball and was stopped by Josh Smith, Blake Abercrombie and Dustin Church for a loss of four. A third down pass was also incomplete and the Bulldogs punted on fourth and 14. Shawn Rennison's punt was then negated on a personal foul call against the War Eagles for roughing Rennision after the kick. Gleason regained possession at the War Eagle 49 with first down. Leach took the ball left for a gain of five before he was brought down by Don Bukovi and Philip Gentile. Leach was then held for a loss by Drew Cunningham and Terry. A pass to Vaughn was good for a gain of four with the stop by Chris Cannon. Leach then moved the ball up the middle and was stopped by Wesley Arnold short of the first down. The War Eagles took over at their own 45-yard line.

Terry broke a tackle and made it to the Gleason 49 before he was stopped by Gleason 49 by Vaughn. Terry got the call again and moved the ball with a penalty moving the ball to the 25-yard line. Terry picked up five before he was stopped by Dinning and then Depriest picked up three yards before gaining first down at the eight. Stops were made by Forrest and Vaughn. On first down, Terry moved the ball left to the one yard line before the ball was stripped loose and recovered by Terry. Brian Spain made the tackle. Terry got the ball on second and one and took the ball into the end zone at the 4:16 mark. A lateral to Justin Smith was good for the two-point conversion and the War Eagles now led 16-0.

Gleason again received a short kick from Taylor with Vaughn taking the ball to the Gleason 47 before he was stopped by C. Cannon. On first down, Vaughn was covered as he attempted to move the ball up the middle for a loss of one by Cunningham, Bukovi and Josh Smith. A motion penalty moved the ball back five yards and on second and six, Vaught moved right before he was stopped by Cunningham and Richie Cannon. A pass was then intercepted by P. Gentile who was stopped by Vaughn at the Gleason 44.

Bond moved up the middle and was stopped by Vaughn and Ryan Cooper, but an offensive holding penalty moved the ball back six yards. Bond moved again with Copeland and Jeremy Corum on the stop. A pass was long to Abercrombie and then Gentile took the ball right for first down at the 26 before he was stopped by Dinning and Corum. R. Cannon took the ball right before he was stopped by Corum for a gain of four. Bond gained a yard, with Corum again on the tackle as the first quarter came to an end. A pass was incomplete to R. Cannon before Bond moved left behind Cunningham for the touchdown at the 11:46 mark of the second period. Keen came in to kick the PAT and the War Eagles now led 23-0.

Vaughn took the kick and was stopped by Ethan Thompson. Petty and Michael Bell attempted to run the ball, but a pass to Vaughn from Bell brought the first down at the 21 yard line. Terry and Wesley Arnold were in on the tackles, with Cherry stopped Vaughn on the pass reception. Vaughn then moved left with the stop by Bond, Cunningham and Cherry after a gain of four. A pass to Vaughn was good with Bukovi making the stop for a loss of two. However with 6:55 remaining in the first half, Gleason's Bell passed again to Vaughn for the touchdown. The conversion attempt was stopped and West Carroll now led 23-6.

Terry received the kick and was stopped by Cooper at the 32. Terry moved to the 45 with the stop by Vaughn at the War Eagle 45. A pass to Bukovi was good with Vaughn making the stop at the Gleason 33. Terry moved right for nine yards with Torres, Dinning and Corum on the stop. A pass to Abercrombie was good for the first down at the two yard line with Vaughn on the stop. A pass was incomplete to Bukovi and then Bond took the ball up the middle and the ball was stripped with the Bulldogs recovering at the one yard line. As the Bulldogs attempted to move the ball out, Vaughn was caught in the end zone by Church and Josh Smith for the safety. With 3:15 remaining in the half, the War Eagles led 25-6. The War Eagles took the ball on the kick and proceeded to reach the end zone with 18.5 remaining in the half, using both the ground and air attack. Cherry moved back to pass on the final play, but found no receiver and took the ball into the end zone from eight yards out. Keen kicked the PAT and the War Eagles took a 32-6 lead into intermission.

During the break, the Marching War Eagles presented their award winning competitive show to the delight of the homecoming crowd.

The second half began with the Bulldogs returning the kick to the 33-yard line and some success in their first offensive possession. A pass to Vaughn was good for five yards with C. Cannon on the stop while Leach moved the ball for a gain of one before he was brought down by Depriest. A pass to Vaughn was good for three with Bukovi, Bond and Whitmore on the stop and then quarterback Bell held for the move up the middle and gained a first down at the 46 before he was stopped by Bukovi. Intentional grounding and a 15-yard penalty was accessed as Bell was rushed and passed the ball into the stands. Bell was then stopped behind the line of scrimmage for a nine-yard loss by Depriest and Terry.

A pass was incomplete to Vaughn, but the officials ruled defensive pass interference, giving the Dawgs first down at their own 34. Dinning was held for a loss of three by Bond and then Leach took the ball for a loss of two by Church. An incomplete pass was followed by the punt. As the ball rolled on the ground and three defenders waited for it to stop, Cherry reached down, picked it up and gained a couple of yards before he was stopped at the War Eagle 46.

Whitmore moved around right end and had the ball stripped as he was hit by Corum, but managed to recover for a first down at the Gleason 37. Whitmore then moved again around right end to pick up another first down as he was brought down by Petty and Vaughn. Depriest then took the ball up the middle for 27 yards and a touchdown at the 6:15 mark of the third period. The kick by Keen was good and the War Eagles now led 39-6.

Gleason took control of the ball at their own 45 after the kickoff and then Dinning picked up two yards before he was stopped by Jason Lott. Vaughn was stopped by Thompson after a gain of two and then Vaughn was again stopped by C. Cannon and Thompson. A pass to Vaughn was good for the first down at the War Eagle 28 with Kevin Gentile and Bukovi on the stop. An incomplete pass was followed by Leach stopped after a gain of seven by C. Cannon and Bukovi. Leach took the ball for a loss of three with Jeremiah Johnson on the stop. A pass to Rennison was good, but he was stopped by Thompson and C. Cannon short of the first down.

West Carroll took over at the 2:43 mark of the third quarter with substitutes in the game. C. Cannon took over at quarterback and quickly handed the ball to R. Cannon for a gain of two before he was stopped by Cowan. A pass was incomplete and then a pass to R. Cannon was good for a gain of six, but not enough for the first down. The punt by Bond was out at the Gleason 44.

The Bulldogs had three and out as the War Eagles took over at the Gleason 40 yard line. Thompson moved up the middle for five as the third quarter ended. Marion Wells made the tackle. A motion penalty negated the advance and then K. Gentile moved for gains of two and ten yards, with first down at the 28. Vaughn made both tackles. A fumble was quickly recovered by Dinning at the 24 to return possession to the Bulldogs.

Leach moved left for eight yards and then first down at the West Carroll 44. Cherry made the initial tackle while Abercrombie made the second. Dinning was stopped by C. Cannon at the 34. Dinning was then tackled by Jason Lott after a gain of three. Leach picked up two and four yards with the stops by K. Gentile and Justin Smith.

Bell picked up the needed one yard for a first down at the 20. Leach picked up three with C. Cannon on the tackle while Bell gained six before he was brought down by Brandon Stafford. Leach was held for no gain by Charles Woodard and then Bell again picked up the first down at the eight. Bell was stopped by Thompson for a loss of eight. The pass was intercepted by Cherry and returned to the one yard line with 3:48 remaining in the game. However, on first down, the ball was fumbled in the end zone and recovered by Aaron Marr for the Bulldogs touchdown with 3:42 remaining The kick by Maddox was wide and the score was 39-12, West Carroll.

Cherry received the kickoff and moved the ball a couple of yards before taking a knee at the War Eagle 31. K. Gentile picked up two yards with Albert Collins and Corum on the stop. Thompson picked up four yards behind Church and was stopped by Nick Jones. An incomplete pass led to the punt to Bell who was stopped at the Gleason 19. Leach moved for a gain of one with C. Cannon and Justin Smith on the stop. Leach was then stopped by Smith and Brooks Blackketter for no gain. Blackketter got a sack on third down and the fourth down pass was incomplete as time ran out.

This Friday night, the War Eagles will host Halls in another regional game while Gleason will host Elliston Baptist in a non-regional game. The War Eagles are now 2-6 overall and 1-3 in regional action while the Bulldogs are 0-8 overall and 0-5 in regional action.

Rebels Blast Eagles 47-8 in Big Regional Victory
By Bobby Young

A game to decide if the Rebels would compete for a Region 6-AA championship was decided quickly. McKenzie played its offensive starters for two quarters and had a track meet. The Rebels poured in 40 first half points, rushed for 256 yards and limited the Eagles to only 13 yards on the ground.
Captains for the gray clad Rebels were Jeremy Sydnor, Jonathan Gaskins, Bruce Anderson and Eric Gilbert.

Coach Ricky Catlett's Eagles began the game with an onsides kick. The ball was kicked only six yards and Chester County did not attempt to field the football, but Rebel Jonathan Gaskins did. The alert Gaskins scooped up the loose football and sprinted for the first score of the night. Before the crowd was settled, the Rebels had made a statement. With 11:55 remaining in the first quarter, Josh Stenberg kicked the PAT good.

First Quarter
McKenzie 7-Chester County 0

McKenzie's special teams woes continued as Chester County returned the McKenzie kick to midfield. On first down, the Eagles quarterback found Tauris Sanders on a deep pass play. Sanders hauled in a forty-yard pass. On first down, at the Rebels ten-yard line, Kyle Walker ran for four yards. Sanders was stopped on a second down for no gain. Walker rolled out and found Sanders in the back of the end zone uncovered. The six-yard touchdown came at the 10:03 mark in the first period. The two-point conversion by Walker found its way into the end zone.

First Quarter
McKenzie 7-Chester County 8
The Chester County Eagles kicked to McKenzie. The Eagles one-point lead would not last long. The kick was returned for fifteen yards to the Rebels 28-yard line. On first down, quarterback Taylor Holland fired and hit David Duncan for an eight-yard gain. On second down, Holland faked to Brannon Milton and turned up the field. He found his way into the Eagle secondary and then the speedy Rebel quarterback finished a sixty-two yard touchdown run with 9:32 remaining in the first quarter. The extra point attempt pulled to the right and was no good.

First Quarter
McKenzie 13-Chester County 8

Three and out for Chester County was the setting for most of the contest. The Rebels second possession began from its own 30-yard line. On first down, Duncan ran for eight yards. Stenberg picked up three and a Rebel first down. Two plays later, Holland fired to a crossing Mitchell Hall for a 13-yard gain and the first down. In the drive, Shiron Perkins ran twice for 41 yards. Perkins 29-yard gain took McKenzie down to the one-yard line. Fullback Milton rammed into the end zone on the next play. With 3:14 remaining in the first quarter, Stenberg ran the two-point conversion into the end zone.

First Quarter
McKenzie 21-Chester County 8

The host Eagles next possession produced zero yards in three attempts. Big hits by Jonathan Adkisson, Justin Adkisson and Milton forced a fourth and ten punt.

McKenzie took over at its own twenty-three yard line. Big runs by Stenberg (16 yards) and Perkins (27 yards) took the ball down to the Eagle three-yard line. Holland ran behind Sydnor for a three-yard touchdown. With 7:19 remaining in the second period, Stenberg split the uprights.

Second Quarter
McKenzie 28-Chester County 8

The Eagles began to fold as they fumbled the kickoff after touchdown. McKenzie recovered at the Eagle 24-yard line. A first down pass from Holland to Duncan was incomplete. Milton got the call for a five-yard gain. But Chester County's defense had no answers for the Rebels Holland, who again reached the outside and went untouched for a twenty-five yard score. With 6:04 remaining in the half, the PAT was missed.

Second Quarter
McKenzie 34-Chester County 8

The Rebel secondary picked off an Eagle pass with 1:45 remaining before half, Duncan intercepted and returned the ball deep to the Eagle 28-yard line. Behind good offensive line blocking, Milton hit the middle behind Gaskins and Ricky Mathis for five yards. Holland ran for 18 yards down to the Eagle 10-yard line. Milton got the call for a two-yard gain. Holland again sped to the outside for an impressive eight-yard score. With 35 seconds remaining before intermission, Holland had scored his fourth touchdown (tying Phillip Curry and Darrian Allen for the most touchdowns in a game by one player). The PAT was missed as Chester County was able to get a hand on it.

Second Quarter
McKenzie 40-Chester County 8

Offensively, little changed the second half for the Eagles. McKenzie held them to seven yards on sixteen attempts and they threw one pass which was incomplete.

McKenzie began the second half with its backups. At quarterback was Matt Merrick. Matt Jones, Brad Campbell and Clint Woodard were the running backs. Ryan Drewry, Jake Smith and Randy Lacey were at wide receiver. On the offensive line were Andrew Cross and Paul Edwards at tackle; Brian Winston and Steven Dickson at guards and Kris Sydnor played center.

The Rebels first possession of the second half began from their own 36-yard line. Merrick fumbled the snap, but recovered for a two-yard loss. On second down, sophomore fullback Campbell ran behind Winston for a big 27-yard gain. Campbell got the call again for a five-yard gain. The Rebel drive fizzled out on a fourth down run by Jones, who was tackled for a one-yard loss on fourth and six.
With just under a minute remaining in the third quarter, McKenzie took over at the Eagle 47-yard line. Campbell ran for a seven-yard gain on first down. Woodard was able to grind out eleven yards and a first down. Jones found running room for 13 yards down to the twenty-three. Quarterback Merrick found running room on the left side of the Eagles defense and raced his way into the end zone from twenty-three yards out.
With 10:39 remaining in the game, Hugo Beccerra kicked the PAT good.

Fourth Quarter
McKenzie 47-Chester County 8

McKenzie's final possession of the game lasted only three plays. From near mid-field, Merrick ran for eight yards. Woodard ran for five and a first down. An interception by the Eagle cornerback from Merrick, which was intended for Drewry, stopped the drive.
Coach Wade Comer was extremely proud of both his offensive and defensive lines; noting that defensive players Shiron Perkins, Haywood Cunningham, David Duncan, Nathan Young, Jonathan Adkisson, Justin Adkisson, Chris Stephens, Mitchell Hall, Eric Gilbert, Brannon Milton, Howard Nolen, Demerick Diggs and Josh Stenberg held the Eagles very well. Offensively, he gave credit to offensive line members, Stevia Harris, Bruce Anderson, Jonathan Gaskins, and Ricky Mathis.

The 47-8 victory over the Eagles secured at least a runner-up spot for the Rebels. The Region 6-AA championship game will be played at Rebel Field on October 26 against the Huntingdon Mustangs.

However, this week, the Lexington Tigers will be coming to Rebel Field. Coach Lindsey's Tigers are sky high after blasting Bolivar 38-13. Lexington currently has three wins and five losses. Lexington's wins came over Chester County 14-7, Fayette Ware 28-18 and Bolivar.

The Tigers have been going with freshman Ty Evans and senior Candice Jones at quarterback. Big Kelsey Arnold will carry the ball. On the line will be the likes of Nate Dams, Dantrael Brown and Jake Hamilton.
McKenzie last played Lexington in 1988. The Tigers played an 8-0 Rebel team and won in a 33-0 shutout. Lexington is on a 10-game winning streak with the Rebels, with McKenzie's last win in 1968 (27-0). Kickoff will be at 7:30 at Rebel Field.
