Homecoming 2001
Rebels Clip Cardinals, 39-18

By Bobby Young

A beautiful night for homecoming 2001 let all football fans shake free from recent tragedies for a couple of hours.
When the extra-long contest had ended, the red clad Rebels had picked up a Region 6-AA win. McKenzie came out strong, pumping in twenty-five first quarter points. Then a comedy of errors and lack of concentration found the host failing to score in the second half.

McKenzie won the toss and deferred its selection until the second half. After a long kickoff return, Adamsville took over at near mid-field at the 44 yard line. On first down, Hockaday ran for four yards. On second down, Hockaday hit the Rebel defense for an eleven yard first down. Rebel defensive tackle Ricky Mathis blasted in and hit Hockaday for a five-yard loss. On third down, Hockaday was held to three yards by Howard Nolen. After a 40-plus yard punt, McKenzie took over from its own twenty-yard line.
A pitch to Shiron Perkins on first down resulted in an electrifying eighty-yard touchdown run. Perkins went virtually untouched into the end zone. With 9:16 remaining in the first quarter, Josh Stenburg kicked the PAT.

The Rebels second possession of the quarter was a six-play scoring drive. Quarterback Taylor Holland ran for 36 yards. Stenberg scampered out 42 yards. Perkins ran for six yards down to the Cardinal four-yard line. David Duncan found the corner for a four yard run for a score. With 4:06 remaining in the first quarter, the PAT by Stenberg was missed.

A costly Cardinal fumble was recovered by Jonathan Adkisson at the Adamsville 25-yard line. On first down, Stenberg totaled seventeen yards down to the nine-yard line. With 3:02 remaining in the first quarter, fullback Brannon Milton cracked the middle for a nine-yard score. The PAT was no good.

First Quarter

McKenzie 19-Adamsville 0

In a quarter completely dominated by Rebels, they were able to tally yet another score. With 2:04 to go in the first quarter, McKenzie took over at mid-field. Perkins sprinted outside for a 17-yard first down. On first down, Holland fired the ball downfield and hit receiver Duncan for a thirty-three yard score with only 1:27 remaining in the quarter. the fourth PAT attempt was again off the mark and no good.

First Quarter

McKenzie 25-Adamsville 0

McKenzie had over 200 yards rushing in the first quarter. The Rebels had 33 yards in the first quarter by way of the pass. Adamsville could muster only 18 rushing yards and five passing yards for the same period.

With 11:50 remaining before intermission, McKenzie took over from a stalled Cardinal drive at the Cardinal 35-yard line. A costly interception near the goal line took away a sure Rebel touchdown. But on McKenzie's next possession, the Rebels were able to start from the Cardinal thirty-six yard line. On first down, a Holland to Carone Tharpe pass was complete for 12 yards. Stenberg ran for 19 yards down to the Cardinal 14. Stenberg again got the call and found the end zone from 14 yards out. With 8:40 remaining on the second quarter clock, Hugo Becerra kicked the PAT good.

Second Quarter

McKenzie 32-Adamsville 0

Todd Hockaday booted a forty-three yard punt down to the Rebel two yard line. On first down, Perkins sped downfield for 25 yards. A Holland to Jay Taylor pass covered 14 more yards. Perkins again dodged and darted his way for a 24-yard pickup. Thirty-four yards away from yet another score. Holland fired to receiver Chris Wall who hauled the ball in for a 34-yard completion and a score. With 3:40 remaining in the half, Becerra kicked the point after.

Second Quarter

McKenzie 39-Adamsville 0

With the backup special teams on the kickoff, the Rebels kicked to Adamsville. Jake Gilchrist corraled the football and hit the middle of the Rebel defense. Gilchrist went virtually untouched for a 78-yard touchdown. A two-point conversion pass from Gilchrist to Jenkins was stopped short of the goal line. Wtih 3:25 remaining before intermission, the Cardinals had avoided a shutout.

Second Quarter

McKenzie 39-Adamsville 6

Late in the second quarter, McKenzie again was coming off its own goal line from the four. A great defensive interception by the Cardinals' Jenkins gave Adamsville a first and goal at the Rebel five yard line. Scottie Adams (6'1"--175 lbs.) helped the Cardinals cause by escaping the Rebels defensive backs and stepping into the end zone from five yards out. With only :08 remaining in the half, the two-point run failed.

Second Quarter

McKenzie 39-Adamsville 12

Though McKenzie was able to tally sizeable yardage in the second half, the Rebels were held off the scoreboard the final two quarters. Costly penalties, interceptions and fumbles led to a lackluster performance in the second half.

Several young MHS backs carried the ball successfully in the final quarter. Brad Campbell, Cody cook and Shane Barksdale saw playing time throughout the fourth quarter.

An interception return set up the white clad Cardinals at the Rebel fourteen yard line. Jonathan Gaskins ran the length of the field to tackle the Cardinal defender back at the fourteen yard line. Hockaday hit the Rebels defense for 12 yards. Quarterback Gilchrist plunged into the end zone from two-yards out. With 9:23 remaining in the game, a Gilchrist to Like Roy pass was incomplete.

Fourth Quarter

McKenzie 39-Adamsville 18

This Friday night, the Rebels travel a short distance to take on the West Carroll War Eagles. Currently, the Eagles are at one win and three losses. The War Eagles lost 48-20 to JCS, then 6-0 to Lake County. Coach Chris Rich's West Carroll squad downed Gibson County 32-14. This past Saturday night, the War Eagles were defeated by Caldwell County, KY, 42-20.

Since 1985, the Rebels and War Eagles have played 14 times. McKenzie's only loss came in 1995, a 14-6 defeat in McKenzie. Since the 1995 loss, the Rebels have tacked on five big wins (1996: McKenzie 39-13; 1997: McKenzie 13-6; 1998: McKenzie 44-0; 2000: McKenzie 13-0).

Senior Jimmy Cherry will quarterback the War Eagles. Injuries have hampered the progress of this year's squad. Several additional injuries hit the War Eagles last Saturday night in addition to those already on the injured list. Coach Chris Rich would like to have one game where his troops are healthy.

On the line will be Brooks Blackketter (5'7"--185 lb. junior), Wesley Arnold (5'11"--280 lb. sophomore), Dustin Church (5'9"--200 lb. junior), and Chris Rimmer (6'2"--236 lb. junior).

The War Eagles will be very excited about playing the Rebels at their new facility at the new West Carroll Junior High/High School. Kickoff time will be 7:30.
