Huntingdon's New Wal-Mart will open Wednesday, February 20, 2002

Wal-Mart Store in Huntingdon will open Wednesday, February 20, boosting the store's employment from 80 employees to 200 and tripling the overall size of the store, according to manager Chris Swallows.

There will be no down-time during the transition from one store to the other. The current store at the intersection of Highway 70 and Williams Street will close for the last time at 8:00 p.m. February 19 and the new store at 180 North Veteran's Drive will open at 8:00 a.m. the following morning.

The new store will be a smaller version of the well-known Wal-Mart Super Center. In addition to the general merchandise section, it will offer a grocery store, pharmacy, photo processing, garden center and gasoline station.

The current store provides 35,000 square feet of space, while the new store will provides 107,000 square feet of space. There will only be one entrance into the store and that will lead into the grocery area, located on the left side of the building. General merchandise will be situated to the right. For the convenience of customers, the store's pharmacy will be located at the front of the store, near the checkout counters. A garden center will be to the right and will include a patio portion of the building.

A photo-processing center will be an added attraction at the new store, featuring the latest digital lab equipment available.

Another added feature will be a full-line grocery store, complete with meat and produce sections. There will be no in-house bakery, however baked items will be available at the Huntingdon location.

"The new store will offer customers a larger assortment of merchandise, with the capacity for general merchandise basically double," said Mr. Swallows.

Murphy's Oil has leased space to provide gasoline for the store's customers. The company is currently constructing a building near the store's parking area and is expected to open on February 20 as well.

The new store will be open seven days a week, 6:00 a.m. until midnight.

Although most of the additional hiring for the new store has been achieved, Mr. Swallows said he is still accepting applications for employment. Applications may be picked up at the front desk.

"I hope the store will better serve the needs of our local customers and they will be able to stay in their hometown and shop," added Mr. Swallows.

Haz-Mat Van, Gym Floor on County Agenda

A new hazardous materials van and the purchase of a gymnasium floor are two of the four resolutions on the Carroll County Commission agenda for January 14. Commissioners will convene at 7:00 p.m. on Monday to consider the resolutions.

County Executive Kenny said the county must purchase a new hazardous materials van for the operation of the Haz-Mat team, which responds to chemical spills, other hazardous incidents, and storms. The present van often will not start, said McBride. The Budget Committee has already approved the low bid of $18,498 pending the final approval by the Commission.

The transfer of funds for the construction of a gymnasium floor at Carroll Academy will also be considered. Carroll Academy Coach Randy Hatch was able to purchase the gymnasium floor from the Memphis Pyramid for $13,633.90, which was thousands of dollars less than the next lowest bid. Funds for the floor have been donated and the commission will just approve a budgetary transfer.

Additional funds are proposed to be placed in the Aging Program account. The State of Tennessee reduced its funding of the county program so the county is expected to makeup the shortfall of $1,556 through the budget amendment.

A resolution will be considered to honor Velma Prince for her 12 years of employment for the County of Carroll. Ms. Prince is retiring from her service in the County Clerk's office.

The Resolution Committee approved Rick Schaffer to address the Commission for up to five minutes. McBride said Schaffer was representing the Carroll County Humane Society and wanted to speak about the matter in which the county was picking up stray dogs.

West Carroll Board Approves Payment to TSSE, Discuss Roof Leaks

West Carroll board members approved a second payment to the Tennessee School Systems for Equity (TSSE) during the system's regular meeting last week. However, Director of Schools Eric Williams, who said they were obligated for this payment, suggested they investigate the pros and cons of continued support before agreeing to further monetary support. Williams said that the organization had definitely been beneficial to the small schools in procuring funding for education. The payment approved was $574.50.

The board discussed some 20 additional roof leaks at the new junior/senior high school, which became apparent during the recent rainy weather. Mr. Williams was asked to set up a meeting between board members and a representative of H&M Construction, the roofing contractor and the roofing manufacturer to determine a course of action. Board Chairman Jimmy Halford noted that it was much too early to be having these problems and he wanted some answers. Board members agreed.

The annual TSBA (Tennessee School Board Associations) Day on the Hill will be February 19. Director Williams stated that he would be going and asked board members who might be able to accompany him to let him know by early February.
The consent agenda was quickly approved, including the minutes for the December meeting, the financial and cafeteria reports and payment to John Cary for assistance in the football program.

The construction at the fieldhouse/concession stand is almost complete. Mr. Williams stated that little needed to be completed and should be done by the end of January with the exception of bathroom partitions which will take longer for delivery.  Williams added that it appeared there would be $7,000-$8,000 remaining in the fund at the completion of the project.
