Bruceton businessman Gerald Wayne Arnold, 68, died
Saturday night after a car crashed into his motorcycle at
the intersection of West Van Hook Street and Cantrell
Street in Milan.
Mr. Arnold was the owner/manager of Gerald's Big Star and
Twin City Laundromat, both in Hollow Rock and Blue Dip
restaurant in Bruceton. He was also a former member of
Carroll County Election Commission and a member and deacon
of First Baptist Church in Bruceton.
Mr. Arnold reportedly was killed instantly when a 1996
Cadillac driven by a 16-year-old Milan boy hit the 1993
Harley Davidson motorcycle he was driving. The teenager
stopped at the intersection and then crossed over West Van
Hook Street, which is also U.S. 70/79. The young man told
police he did not see the motorcycle.
Arnold was ejected from his motorcycle and suffered severe
head trauma. Arnold's son and daughter-in-law were
trailing him on another motorcycle, but were not injured.
The teenager, who police did not identify, did not have
any charges filed against him, according to Officer Rodney
Riley.
He is survived by his wife, Sandra Barnes Arnold of
Bruceton, two daughters, Regina Luther of Buena Vista,
Amanda McMackin of Bruceton and a son, Clay Arnold of
Bruceton. See separate obituary in this edition. |

"This is an opportunity I couldn't pass up. It is an
opportunity for professional growth," said Charlene
Alsup of her new position as the Elementary Supervisor
of Instruction for Weakley County Schools. Mrs. Alsup
tendered her resignation as the principal of McKenzie
Elementary School on Monday. "I really struggled with it
(the decision to leave). I loved my job and I loved
McKenzie." She noted that she was offered the Weakley
County and initially rejected the job offer.
The Dresden resident was tapped for the McKenzie
Elementary School (K-4) principalship last year
following the retirement of Judi Rawdon. Mrs. Alsup was
an elementary level teacher and had served as assistant
principal at Dresden Elementary School before accepting
the position at McKenzie.
McKenzie Special School District is accepting
applications to fill the principal's position. Mrs.
Alsup said she will continue to work in McKenzie this
week and will be available to help the new principal
once hired.
McKenzie Superintendent Jim Ward was "very gracious and
offered encouragement," said Mrs. Alsup. |

August 15 noon is the deadline for candidates seeking
municipal offices in Bruceton, Clarksburg, Hollow Rock,
Huntingdon, McKenzie and McLemoresville.
McKenzie - Candidates can qualify for the position of

Councilman Ward III, currently held by Willie Huffman;
and Councilman Ward V, currently held by Gene Hale. A
third person, Billy Barksdale has picked up a petition

Hale have each qualified for their respective positions,
while Willie Huffman has not picked up a petition to
seek re-election.
Bruceton - Candidates can qualify for the office of
mayor or two aldermen positions, each for four-year
