Arlene Jean Van Hofwegen
Blackketter
MCLEMORESVILLE: Arlene Jean Van Hofwegen Blackketter
died Saturday, February 9 at her home following a long
battle with cancer. She was born December 17, 1934 in
Lebanon, Iowa, the youngest daughter of Arie and Johanna (Eddom)
Van Hofwegen. In the fall of 1940, Arlene began school at
the Keuning School, near Harrison, South Dakota. In
October of that same year, the Van Hofwegen family moved
to southern California, where she completed her education,
graduating in 1952 from Upland Academy.
On September 2, 1955 in the Ontario Christian Reformed
Church, Ontario, California, Arlene was married to her
high school sweetheart, Koert Lewis Blackketter. Arlene
and Lewis made their first home in Stillwater, Oklahoma
while Lewis attended Oklahoma A & M (now Oklahoma State
University). While in Stillwater, their first child was
born. Upon completion of a Bachelor of Science degree in
animal husbandry in 1957, Lewis bought a farm near Leedey,
Oklahoma where he began his career in dairy farming. While
living there, five more children were born.
In September 1965, Arlene and Lewis moved to Carroll
County. They first operated a dairy near Trezevant. In
April 1968, they moved to McLemoresville, where Lewis
established the Blackketter Jersey Farm. They retired from
the dairy business in November 1996. Soon after they moved
to Tennessee, Arlene and Lewis joined the Trezevant
Methodist Church, where she served as teacher for the
Youth Sunday School class for more than thirty years.
While her daughters were young, Arlene was involved
with Girl Scouts, helping to establish troops in Trezevant
and in McLemoresville. She served as troop leader for ten
years, in addition to being the Carroll County Day Camp
Director for four years. She also served as MYF director
at the Trezevant United Methodist Church during the same
period. When her children were grown, she became an active
member of the Trezevant/McLemoresville Home Demonstration
Club, the Trezevant United Methodist Women and the Carroll
County Camp of Gideons Auxiliary.
Those who survive and mourn her death are her husband
of more than 46 years, Lewis Blackketter; her children;
Susan Partridge and her husband Michael of Huntingdon, Van
Blackketter and his wife, Louanne of McLemoresville, Gail
Eubanks and her husband Harold of Huntingdon, Alan
Blackketter and his wife Denise of Washington D.C. and Ann
Butler and her husband Ricky of Huntingdon; twelve
grandchildren, Michelle Harris and her husband James of
Des Plaines, Illinois, Jonathan, Jacob and Stephanie
Partridge of Huntingdon, Leah and Brooks Blackketter of
McLemoresville, Kirk, Kevin and Karl Butler of Huntingdon,
and Emily, Adam and Thomas Blackketter of Washington D.C.;
two step-grandsons, Alan and Daniel Eubanks of Huntingdon;
one sister, Bets Bos of California; and four brothers,
Steve, Jack, and Allan Van Hofwegen, all of California and
Bob Van Hofwegen of Arizona. Arlene was preceded in death
by an infant daughter, JoNell Blackketter, her parents,
one brother, Ed Van Hofwegen and two sisters, Janet Frings
and Marguerite Delong.
Funeral services, under the direction of Chase Funeral
Home, were held Tuesday, February 12, 2002 at the
Trezevant United Methodist Church, Trezevant with the Rev.
Tommie Martin officiating. Interment followed in the
McLemoresville Cemetery.
Charles A. Dalton
LAKEWOOD, WASHINGTON: Charles A. Dalton, 70, passed
away on Sunday, December 23. He was born October 14, 1931
in Huntingdon. He served in the U.S. Army for twenty years
and retired from Tacoma Container Corporation of America.
He was also part owner of Mrs. "C" Restaurant in Tacoma.
He was a longtime member of AMVETS Post #1.
Charles was preceded in death by his wife Gertrude in
1992. Survivors include his son Kenneth; a sister, Angelyn
Burton; two grandchildren; and several nephews.
Charles graduated from Webb High School in 1949.
Chessie Carlean Puckett
DRESDEN: Services for Chessie Carlean Puckett, 88,
were at 2:00 p.m., Monday, February 11 at Gallimore
Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Steve Boone and Bro. Harvey
Elder officiating. Burial was in the New Hope Cemetery
near Latham.
Mrs. Puckett died on Saturday, February 9 at Methodist
Volunteer Hospital in Martin.
She was born November 6, 1913 in Coldwater, Kentucky to
the late James and Susan Hangline Smith. She was a member
of Liberty Church of Christ.
Survivors include two daughters, Shirley Parker and
Nancy White, both of Dresden; three grandchildren and nine
great-grandchildren.
Bethany Lynn Brackett
DRESDEN: Graveside services for Bethany Lynn Brackett,
infant daughter of James Nathan and Tremanda Lynn
Brackett, were Thursday, February 7 at Olive Branch
Cemetery with the Rev. Michael Simmons officiating.
The baby was stillborn Wednesday, February 6 at
Methodist Hospital in McKenzie.
Additional survivors, besides her parents include three
sisters, Isabella Danielle Brackett, Brooklyn Elise
Brackett and Brittany Elaine Brackett, all of Dresden;
grandparents Ricky and Marisa Gallimore of Dresden, Eddie
and Betty Fitzgerald of Fulton, Kentucky and Bo and Tonya
Pirackett of Martin; great-grandparents Wanda and Junior
Legens of Dresden, Mary Ann and Freddie Scott of Milan and
Addie Gallimore of Dresden and the late Woody Gallimore.
Gallimore Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
Joe Watson Walker
WILDERSVILLE: Mr. Joe (Boy) Watson Walker, 62, died
Wednesday, February 6 at his home. Funeral services were
conducted on Friday, February 8 at 2:00 p.m. at the Chase
Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Andrew Stokes officiating.
Interment followed in the New Hope Cemetery.
Mr. Walker was born July 9, 1939 in Carroll County to
the late E.T. (Jim) and Joella (Pritchard) Walker. He was
an army veteran, a member of the Yuma Baptist Church and a
member of the Alchymia Shriners of Memphis. He attended
the Clarksburg High School where he graduated in 1958. His
sister, Margie Ross passed away on the same day. He was
also preceded in death by another sister, Jo Priestly
Fronabarger and one brother, James G. (Buddy) Walker.
He is survived by his wife Maxie (Hester) Walker, two
daughters, Sherri Louise Walker of Lake Cormorant,
Mississippi and Wanda Lynn Walker of Cordova; one sister,
Imogene (Doodie) Hill of Greenville, Texas; one brother,
Harlan Walker of Clarksburg and two granddaughters.
Marjorie M. Parsley
MCKENZIE: Funeral services for Marjorie M. Parsley,
86, were at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, February 9 at Gallimore
Funeral Home with the Rev. Johnny Hazelwood officiating.
Burial was in Eastview Cemetery.
Mrs. Parsley, a retired LPN, died Thursday, February 7
at Methodist Volunteer Hospital.
She was born June 24, 1925 in Wingo, Kentucky to the late
Luby and Inez McNeil Green. She was a member of Calvary
Presbyterian Church.
Survivors include her husband, Minus Parsley; two sons,
Donnie Richmond of Water Valley, Kentucky and William
Ingrum of Mayfield, Kentucky; three daughters, Sharlotte
Heileman of Santa Fe, Texas, Kay Martin of Philadelphia,
Pennsylvania, and Jo Gordon of Gleason; a stepdaughter,
Mary Alice Crocker of Savannah; a brother, Harold Green of
Wingo, Kentucky; ten grandchildren; five
great-grandchildren; five step-grandchildren and one
step-great-grandchild.
Argyle Harper, Jr.
ALAMO: Funeral services for Argyle Harper, Jr, 67,
were held Wednesday, February 6 at Alamo First Baptist
Church with Bro. Chris Rigby officiating. Burial was in
Oak View Memorial Cemetery.
Mr. Harper was born on April 18, 1934 in Gibson County.
He died at his home on Monday, February 4.
He was retired from American Air Filters and Crockett
County Middle School. Argyle served in the U.S. Army from
1953 until 1969. He served in the Korean Conflict and was
a squad leader in the Vietnam Conflict.
His mother, Lucy Harper, his father, Argyle Harper, Sr.
and a brother, Homer Harper, preceded him in death.
He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Martha Jane;
one son, Billy Harper of Alamo; seven sisters, Florence
Crocker, Estelle Blankenship, Hattie Crocker, all of
Milan; Rose Hayes of Ville Platte, Louisiana; Mary Ruth
Barnes of Fortuna, California; Jessie May Shannon of
Montgomery, Alabama; and Shirley Taylor of McKenzie; a
brother, Wilburn Harper of Milan and two grandchildren.
Maggie Mildred McAdoo
MCKENZIE: Services for Maggie Mildred McAdoo, 92, were
at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, February 9 at Brummitt Funeral
Home with Bro. Harrell Nation officiating. Burial was in
Mt. Olivet Cemetery.
Mrs. McAdoo, widow of Earnest William McAdoo, died
Wednesday night, February 6 at Oak Manor Health Care
Center in McKenzie.
She was born March 29, 1909 in Carroll County to the
late Maggie Deck Montgomery and Bruce Montgomery. She was
a member of the First United Methodist Church in McKenzie.
Survivors include two grandchildren, Donnie Beal of San
Diego, California and Danny Beal of McKenzie; and one
great-grandson, Mike Beal of Ft. Carson, Colorado.
A daughter, Marie Beal; two sisters, Ora Chandler and
Agnes Demoss and a brother, Vernice Montgomery preceded
her in death.
Opal C. Fry
CEDAR GROVE: Mrs. Opal C. Fry, 89, died Friday,
February 8 at Baptist Memorial Hospital. Funeral services
were conducted on Sunday, February 10 at the Leach Seventh
Day Adventist Church with Brother Jim Humphrey
officiating. Interment followed in the church cemetery.
Mrs. Fry was born February 5, 1913 in Henderson County
to the late Crawford and Bertha Kelly Ledsinger. She was a
retired cook for Care Inn and a member of the Leach
Seventh Day Adventist Church. She was preceded in death by
her husband, B. D. Fry; a son Bobby Fry and a sister,
Mildred Dunn.
Survivors include two sons, Jerry H. Fry of Cedar Grove
and Sammy Joe Fry of Huntingdon; a sister, Susie Parham;
five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren and one
great-great-grandchild.
Dilday Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
Marjorie Faye Walker Ross
YUMA: Mrs. Marjorie Faye Walker Ross, 67, died
Wednesday, February 6 at the Jackson-Madison County
General Hospital. Funeral services were conducted on
Saturday, February 9 in the Dilday Funeral Home Chapel
with Chaplain Clayton Davis and Bro. Randal Woods
officiating. Interment followed in Carroll Memorial
Gardens.
Mrs. Ross was born September 30, 1934 in Carroll County
to the late Edd Timberlake "Jim" Walker and Joella
Pritchard Walker. She was a homemaker and a member of the
County Line Missionary Baptist Church. Her husband, Guy
Vernon Ross, who died in January 1984; one sister, Jo
Priestly Fronabarger, and two brothers, James Gregory
(Buddy) Walker and Joe Watson (Joe Boy) Walker preceded
her in death.
She is survived by one daughter, Pamela Ann Ross Kirk
of Yuma; one sister, Imogene Hill of Greenville, Texas;
one brother, Robert Harlon Walker of Yuma; and two
grandchildren.
Laura Mae Kirby
CLARKSBURG: Miss Laura Mae Kirby, 81, died Wednesday,
February 6 at the Huntingdon Health and Rehabilitation
Center. Services were conducted in the Dilday Funeral Home
Chapel with Brother Pete Kirby officiating. Interment
followed at Barr Springs Cemetery.
Miss Kirby was born August 7, 1920 in Carroll County to
the late Homer and Ada Robertson Kirby. She was a
homemaker and was saved at the Clarksburg Baptist Church.
Two brothers, Frazier Kirby and R. J. Kirby and a sister,
Brooksie Douglas preceded her in death.
She is survived by two sisters, Maggie Tucker and
Martie Singleton, both of Clarksburg and several nieces
and nephews.
Jerry Dell Staten
LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA: Mr. Jerry Dell Staten, 55,
formerly of Carroll County, died Monday, February 4.
Services were conducted on Sunday, February 10 at Parkers
Chapel Baptist Church with Rev. Charles Clarke
officiating. Interment followed in the church cemetery.
Mr. Staten was born June 10, 1954 in Clarkburg to the late
Seslee and Velma Parker Staten. He was a technician for
Pest Control.
He is survived by one daughter, Keiawnata Staten of Los
Angeles, California; one son, Jerry Kemon Staten of
Anchorage, Alaska; two sisters, Ruby Staten and Janis
Staten, both of Huntingdon; one brother, Willie Staten of
Lexington and several grandchildren.
Dilday Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
Robert E. Zollman
GLEASON: Funeral services for Robert E. Zollman, 68,
were held at 2:00 p.m., Sunday, February 10, at the
Gallimore Funeral Home with the Rev. Kenny Carr
officiating. His body was cremated.
Mr. Zollman, retired from World Color, died Friday,
February 8 at McKenzie Methodist Hospital.
He was born August 4, 1932 in Lansing, Michigan to the
late Lawrence and Wilma Lucille Sharp Zollman. He was a
member of the Gleason First Baptist Church.
Survivors include a son, David Zollman of Lansing,
Michigan; a daughter, Jane Zollman of Lansing, Michigan; a
stepson, Stacy Dale Davis of Gleason and a stepdaughter,
Janice Gage of Alamo.
Roger F. Berry
DRESDEN: Big Sandy native Roger F. Berry, 85, died
Sunday, February 10 at Jackson-Madison County General
Hospital. Services were held at 1:00 p.m., Tuesday,
February 12 at Ridgeway Funeral Home with Jerry Rainbolt
and Eddie Hicks officiating. Burial was in Flatwood
Cemetery in Big Sandy.
Born January 10, 1917, he was a son of the late William
Thomas Berry and Maggie Helen Hargis Berry.
He was married February 6, 1936 to the former Bessie
Anderson, who died in 1978. He later was married in
September 1979 to the former Thelma DePriest, who
survives.
Berry was a longtime farmer and carpenter and contractor
with Berry Brothers Construction Company. He was a member
of the Primitive Baptist Church in Dresden and a World War
II naval veteran.
Other survivors include a son, Roger Dale Berry of
Alabaster, Alabama; one sister, Hazel Marie Boane of
Gleason; one granddaughter and several nieces and nephews.
A daughter, Eulah Ann Berry; a sister, Ida Charles and three
brothers, Clifton, Phillip and Russell Berry preceded him
