Vivian Yelverton Finch
An esteemed teacher and citizen, Vivian Yelverton Finch
of East Main Street, Huntingdon died Saturday, November
23, at Baptist Memorial Hospital, Memphis. She was
preceded in death by her husband, John Edward Finch in
1987. She is survived by her three children, Carol Finch
Gooch of McKenzie, John E. Finch, II of Kalispell,
Montana and Janet Finch Milinet of Germantown. She is
also survived by four grandchildren and two
great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Finch was born in Faro, North Caroline to David
Archie and Mattie Hunt Yelverton. She earned an
undergraduate degree from East Carolina University and
later a Masters’ Degree from Memphis State University. A
firm believer in the value and importance of a good
education, she took additional courses at Bethel
College, Jackson State Community College and the
University of Tennessee at Martin.
Upon arriving in Huntingdon in the late 1940’s, she
began a long and distinguished teaching career in the
Huntingdon Special School District. For over three
decades, she enthusiastically taught a variety of high
school business and science courses, including biology,
chemistry and physics. Her former students include
innumerable healthcare providers, attorneys, engineers,
educators, and other professionals, many of whom credit
her for inspiring their academic and professional
achievement. Her contribution to the education of the
citizens of Huntingdon is without measure.
A woman of sterling character, Mrs. Finch was known to
all in Huntingdon and to many in West Tennessee and
beyond. As a firm believer in the virtue of education,
she frequently advised her students to get all the
education they could. She assured them that education
was the key to their future. She was devoted to her
family and committed to their education, working two
jobs to put her children through college. In addition to
teaching, she also worked for over thirty years as a
bookkeeper at Wilson’s Clinic and later at the R.B.
Wilson Medical Center of Baptist Memorial Hospital in
Huntingdon.
Notwithstanding her busy work schedule, Mrs. Finch found
time for many community activities. She was a member of
the First United Methodist Church of Huntingdon and the
Booklover’s Club at the time of her death. In years’
past, she had also been very involved with the Women’s
Club, the Business and Professional Women’s Club and
Delta Kappa Gamma Professional Society.
She was an extraordinary and respected citizen, teacher,
guide, mother and friend. We shall miss her terribly,
but her legacy lives on with her family and the
thousands of lives she touched with her teaching skills.
