Gene Paul Arnold
1933-2002
BRUCETON: Services for Gene Paul Arnold, 69, were at
10:00 a.m., Friday, September 6 at Bruceton Funeral Home
Chapel with the Revs. Jimmy Allison and Terry Bradshaw
officiating. Burial was in Prospect Cemetery.
Mr. Arnold, a retired assistant vice-president of Bank
of Huntingdon of Bruceton, died on Tuesday, September 3
at the Med in Memphis.
He was born August 7, 1933 to the late Nevil Bowden and
Annie Jordan Arnold. He was an army veteran and a member
of First Baptist Church in Bruceton.
Survivors include his wife, Doris Marie Petway Arnold;
two sons, Mark Arnold and Alan Arnold; a sister, Nellie
Jo Butler, all of Bruceton; five grandchildren and two
great-grandchildren.
Bessie Cooper Baker
1914-2002
MARTIN: Services for Bessie Cooper Baker, 87. were
Friday, September 6 at First Baptist Church with the
Rev. Roger B. Oldham officiating. Burial was in East
Side Cemetery.
Mrs. Baker, widow of Ben Hooper Baker, died Tuesday,
September 3 at Jackson-Madison County General Hospital.
She was born December 3, 1914 in the Buena Vista
Community in Carroll County. She was a member of the
First Baptist Church in Martin.
Survivors include a daughter, Jane Powell of Greenfield;
three sons, Jon Baker of Memphis, Ben Joe Baker of
Florence, Alabama, and Gary Baker of Martin; seven
grandchildren and two great-great-granchildren.
Helen Gay Brewer
1923-2002
CAMDEN: Services for Helen Gay Brewer, 78, were at
4;00 p.m., Wednesday, September 4 at Stockdale-Malin
Chapel. Burial was in Benton Memorial Gardens.
Mrs. Brewer died on Tuesday, September 3 at Camden
General Hospital. Her husband, Zenial Brewer and a son,
Ronnie Brewer preceded her in death.
She was born November 17, 1923 in Henry County to the
late O.C. Sanders and Jewel Crosno Sanders. She was a
retired seamstress from HIS and was a member of the
Camden Church of Christ.
Survivors include a sister, Anice Reynolds, a brother,
Ervin Sanders, three grandchildren and three
great-grandchildren.
William Charles Kortvely, Sr.
1922-2002
BRUCETON: Funeral services for William Charles
Kortvely, Sr., 79, were at 11:00 a.m., Saturday,
September 7 at the First Baptist Church in Bruceton with
the Rev. John Brown officiating. Burial was in Prospect
Cemetery with Bruceton Funeral Home in charge of the
arrangements.
Mr. Kortvely died Wednesday, September 4 at St. Thomas
Hospital in Nashville of complications following cardiac
arrest.
He was born September 26, 1922 in Allentown, PA. He was
the son of the late Joseph and Bertha Kortvely. A
daughter, Judith Delores Kortvely; two sisters, Betty
Ritter and Margaret Chamegie and two brothers, Joe
Kortvely and Louis Kortvely preceded him in death.
Survivors include his wife, Maxine Kortvely; two
daughters, Karen Morello of Nashville and Joan Walters
of Hollow Rock; a son, William Kortvely, Jr. of
Bruceton; a brother, Zolton Kortvely of Wescosville, PA;
four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Mr. Kortvely was a member of the First Baptist Church in
Bruceton. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving
during World War II. He retired from TVA after 27 years
of service and began an eight-year consulting career
working as a project engineer for various nuclear power
plants. Following retirement from his second career, Mr.
Kortvely worked for F.E.M.A. and also served 11 years
for B.V.I. as a volunteer.
He served two terms on the Hollow Rock-Bruceton School
Board and was a member of the Elks Lodge in Camden.
Donny Ray Rimmer
1945-2002
ATWOOD: Services for Donny Ray Rimmer, 57, retired
Replogle Lumber Company employee, were on Wednesday,
September 4 at 2:00 p.m. at Bodkin Funeral Home with
burial in Pisgah Cemetery.
Mr. Rimmer died on September 2 at Methodist Healthcare
in McKenzie.
Survivors include his wife, Barbara Rimmer of Atwood;
two daughters, Kim Nelson of McKenzie and Kendell Rimmer
of Atwood; one son, Donny Rimmer, Jr. of McKenzie; his
father, Virgil Rimmer of Greenfield; one sister, Judy
Bailey of Greenfield; five brothers, Bobby Rimmer, Gary
Rimmer, Dale Rimmer, Randy Rimmer, and Harold Rimmer,
all of Trezevant and four grandchildren.
David Neil Elkins
1946-2002
MEMPHIS: David Neil Elkins, C.P.A., 56, a longtime
businessman and former owner of Elkins Bookkeeping and
Tax Service, died Tuesday, September 3 at his home.
Mr. Elkins was born on May 23, 1946 in Bruceton, the son
of the late Thomas F. Elkins.
Survivors include two sons, Jeffrey Elkins of Memphis
and Stanford Elkins of Cordova; his mother, Lou Nell
Elkins of Bruceton; a sister, Donna Stoelting of Vero
Beach, Florida; and a brother, Dale Elkins of
Murfreesboro.
Graveside services were held on Friday, September 6 at
2:00 p.m. at Prospect Cemetery in Hollow Rock. Bruceton
Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
R.L. Nelson
1923-2002
MCKENZIE: R.L. Nelson, 79, died on Tuesday,
September 3 at Methodist Hospital in McKenzie. Funeral
services were conducted at 3:00 p.m., Thursday,
September 5 at Brummitt Funeral Home in McKenzie with
Bro. Fred Morris officiating. Burial was in Shiloh
Cemetery in McKenzie.
Mr. Nelson, the son of the late Horace Edward and Josie
Rayburn Nelson, was born January 11, 1923 in the
Macedonia Community. He was retired from American
Cyanamid Co. in Kalamazoo, Michigan. He was a member of
Grace Baptist Church and was also a World War II army
veteran.
Survivors include his wife, Retha Vaughn Nelson, to whom
he was married on January 3, 1994; one half-sister,
Thelma Schneider of Detroit, Michigan; one brother, Rev.
James Wade Nelson; four nieces and three nephews.
His first wife, Inge Shaffer Nelson and two sisters,
Elizabeth Nelson Wallace and Frances Nelson McBride
preceded him in death.
Ruth Marie Bush Smith
1931-2002
CEDAR GROVE: Mrs. Ruth Marie Bush Smith, 71, died on
Sunday, September 8 at her home. Funeral services were
conducted on Monday, September 9 at 2:00 p.m. at the
Christian Chapel Church of Christ with Bro. Rufus
Chandler officiating. Interment followed in the church
cemetery where her parents and great-grandparents are
interred.
Mrs. Smith was born February 14, 1931 in her lifelong
home of Leach to the late William Bennett Bush and
Georgia Ann Kee Bush. She was a member of the Christian
Chapel Church of Christ and a homemaker. She was the
granddaughter of John and Frances Minervia Kennedy Kee
and John and Amanda Merritt Bush. A sister, Lorene Hall
and three brothers, Virgil Bush, William Bush and Graden
Bush also preceded her in death.
Survivors include her husband, to whom she was married
on August 27, 1949, Willie Smith, Jr.; three daughters,
Bertha Walls of Cedar Grove, Elizabeth Blakeman and Lena
Crafton, both of Huntingdon; two sisters, Faye Harris of
McKenzie and Floy Zipse of Huntingdon; two brothers, Doc
Bush of Huntingdon and Willie Junior Bush of McKenzie;
eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; nine
great-great-grandchildren; one step great-grandchild and
a host of nieces and nephews.
Chase Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
Walter Smith
1929-2002
BRUCETON: Mr. Walter Smith, 73, died on Tuesday,
September 3 at the Life Care Center in Bruceton. Funeral
services were conducted on Thursday, September 5 at 2:00
p.m. in the Chase Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Joe
Abbott officiating. Interment followed in the Bethlehem
Cemetery.
Mr. Smith was born February 16, 1929 in Carroll County
to the late Walter Duel Smith and Queenie Turner Smith.
He was a member of the Bruceton Church of Christ and a
farmer. He was a former magistrate for Carroll County
and former board member of the Carroll County General
Hospital. One sister, Mary Charlene Smith also preceded
him in death.
Survivors include his wife, whom he married on June 6,
1946, Juanita Usery Smith; one daughter, Suzanne Snider;
one son, Joe Smith; all of Bruceton; one sister,
Virginia Marie Smith of Athens; five grandchildren and
four great-grandchildren.
Nieana Neshay Clark

MCKENZIE: Graveside services for Niena Neshay Clark
will be held on Wednesday, September 11 at Mt. Olive
Cemetery in Atwood. Nieana, the infant daughter of
Tanyaka Clark and Terry Weathers died on Thursday,
September 5 at Jackson-Madison County General Hospital.
Stephenson-Shaw Funeral Home is in charge of the
arrangements.
Faye Hopper
1929-2002
GLEASON: Services for Faye Hopper, 73 were held on
Friday, September 6 at Gallimore Funeral Home Chapel
with Rev. Gene Price officiating. Burial was in Butler
Cemetery.
Mrs. Hopper, a retired bank teller from the Bank of
Gleason, died on Wednesday, September 4 at Methodist Le
Bonheur Hospital in Jackson.
She was born February 24, 1929 to the late Orell and
Fannie Mae Steele Shaw. She was a member of the Gleason
First Baptist Church. A brother, Jack Shaw and a sister,
Dareen Owen also preceded her in death.
Survivors include her husband, M.M. Hopper; a daughter,
Fonda Voigtmann of Tupelo, Mississippi and two sons, Don
Hopper of Memphis and Hal Hopper of Gleason; nine
grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
