McKenzie Middle School Student of the Week

Brittany Mobbs was chosen student of the week because of her continual desire to learn and the kindness that she shows to all her fellow classmates. Brittany always comes to class prepared and eager to participate in the lesson. She not only is concerned about herself, she is always willing to lend a helping hand to her classmates. She is very courteous and very well mannered. It is very refreshing to have a student like Brittany. She is truly a role model and that qualifies her for student of the week. Brittany was chosen by her fifth grade science teacher, Mrs. McClain.

  Notes From the High School

Our football team, as most people know, ended its season against Memphis Mitchell on November 29 in the semi-finals of the Class 2A State Playoffs. When these young men began the season, few people gave them the respect to do as well as they did. They struggled in the pre-season trying to find the team chemistry following the loss of 17 seniors and having to fill 21 of 22 starting positions. After starting the first half of the year at 4-1, the Rebels lost three of the last five regular season games - two of these games were one-point losses. This team, however, had the grit and determination to challenge itself to do well and thus began the magical playoff season. The consecutive victories against Region 5-2A opponents - two in overtime and one in the last minute - captured the imagination of the home crowd who began to see the growth of these young men, not simply as athletes, but young men exhibiting great character on the field. The loss to Mitchell does not diminish the season. Against a quicker, faster, and more athletic team, the Rebels fought for four quarters. Unfortunately, great effort and heart do not always produce victories and so the season ended. For the seniors, they can point with pride to 41 victories during their four years of playing - a school record. More importantly, they can be proud of matching last year's team in reaching the "final four" in the state after losing so many starters to graduation. Congratulations to the players and our coaches - head coach Wade Comer, assistant head coach David Duncan, assistant coach Randy Thomas, assistant coach Brad Chappell, and volunteer coach Nick Young. Thank you for a great season.

The Gateway tests will be administered this week to students in several of our classes. On Tuesday, December 10, students will take the Algebra I (math) Gateway exam. Also, students in Foundations II will take the end-of-course test mandated by the State Department of Education. On Wednesday, December 11, students will take the Biology I (science) Gateway. Students in Biology I and biology for technology will take this test. On Thursday, December 12, students in English II will take the required Gateway exam for English. Students who entered high school in 2001-02 or after must pass these exams to receive a regular diploma. For all students, these tests will count 15% of their second semester grade.

Our basketball teams opened their season at home last Tuesday against Stewart County. The girls were victorious over the visiting Lady Rebels of Stewart County by a 10-point margin. The boys showed the effect of only two days of practice because of the extended football season and fell to their opponents by 15-points. On Friday, the basketball teams battled cross-county rival West Carroll. The Lady Rebels improved their record to 2-0 with a convincing 68-34 victory. Coach Ridley had the opportunity to play all of his players as the Lady Rebels expanded the ten-point halftime margin to over 20 by the mid-point in the third period. Nearly every player contributed to the victory as the Lady Rebels had a hot hand in shooting. In the boys' game, the Rebels raced out to a ten-point lead, but saw that margin dwindle to two at halftime. The War Eagles grabbed the lead early in the third frame, but could not shake the scrapping and persistent Rebels. The game was in question to the end, but the War Eagles eked out a one-point victory. The Rebels record dipped to 0-2 with the loss.

This week the team will play at Huntingdon on Tuesday (December 11), at home against Riverside on Friday, at Big Sandy on Saturday, and at home against Dresden on Tuesday (December 17). They close out the regular pre-Christmas schedule at Clarksburg on Friday, December 20.

Our Spanish Club and Spanish II students will travel to Clarksville on Wednesday to see the opera The Banker of Seville performed in Spanish. Ms. Brewster and Ms. Cole have made this an annual trip and have enjoyed hearing the language spoken in dramatic form. Thirty-seven students plan to attend this performance. The troupe performing the opera will be the National Theatre of the Performing Arts out of Bridgeport, Connecticut.

On Monday, December 16, we will have our annual Christmas Program for the community at 7:00 P.M. in the gymnasium. Performers include the high school band and chorus class under the direction of Keith Breeden and the high school honors chorus under the direction of Dawn Clubb. We encourage all music lovers and supporters of our music program to attend this festive occasion.

Now is not too soon for students to begin their preparation for semester exams. These important tests will begin on Thursday, December 19, with First Block and Fourth Block tests. Friday, December 20, will be a half-day for students taking tests. Students will take Second Block and Third Block tests. School will dismiss for the Christmas break at 11:15 on Friday, December 20. Classes will resume on Monday, January 6, 2003.
