Seventh Grade Reading Classes Participate in Reader's Digest Challenge

The seventh grade reading classes at McKenzie Middle School recently participated in the Reader's Digest National Word Power Challenge. This is a vocabulary contest in which students across the U.S. are competing. Each class had separate contests to gain a winner from their room. Then the four class winners competed for the seventh grade championship.

Winners for each class were: Scott Vermillion (Hardy), Lesley Robertson (Highfil), Zack Cox (Kee) and Damon Hardy (Peters). The overall winner was Scott Vermillion. He will be taking a vocabulary test which will be sent in to qualify for state competition. State winners will then compete in the National contest in Williamsburg, Virginia for a $25,000 college scholarship.

A total of 20 students from this area are included in the 365th Annual Edition of Who’s Who Among American High School Students, 2001-2002.

Who’s who, published by Educational Communications, Inc., Austin, Texas, is the largest recognition program and publication in the nation honoring high achieving high school students.
