Friday, March 28 McKenzie Elementary School held its
Citizen of the Month Program. Students are selected by
their teacher to be recognized for displaying the
characteristics of good citizenship. They are awarded a
certificate, a bumper sticker, a pin and a United States
flag. Parents and friends are invited to attend. A small
reception is held afterward and the student's picture is
taken. It is later displayed on a bulletin board in the
hall. This month's speaker was Rev. Harrell Nation, Jr.

Friday afternoon third grade had activities in the gym
centered around math. Students participated in learning
activities led by teachers and parents. Every ten
minutes groups rotated to another station. Prizes were
given to students who solved problems and won
competitions. The math activities lasted for an hour and
a half. Lessons taught included estimation, spatial
reasoning, multiplication, problem solving, fractions,
place value, area, perimeter, and real life problems.
Students seemed to enjoy the activities and were
actively involved in learning.
Students will be taking part in the statewide TCAP
tests this week at McKenzie Elementary School. Students
and teachers have been working hard to raise the test
scores from last year. Wednesday afternoon, Principal
Charlene Alsup led second, third and fourth grade
students in cheers to get them excited and motivated
about taking the tests. She assured them they would do
well and when the results are in the school would
celebrate success. The tests are scheduled for April
2-4. Testing time will be in the morning from 8:00-11:00
a.m.
Kindergarten teachers want to remind all parents that
registration for next year's students will be on April
12 from 7:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. If you have any
questions, please call the school at 352-5272.
A PTO meeting will be held at McKenzie Elementary on
April 15 at 7:00 p.m. Third grade will be in charge of
the program.
The Honors Reception for third and fourth grade
students will be on April 30 at 7:00 p.m. More
information will be available a little later on
regarding this event.
The Scholastic Book Fair ended April 1. Please get
all orders turned in.
The announcer for last week was Andrew Doster from
Mrs. Jill Warren's room. Andrew did a great job.
Until next time.....

Our Balfour representative met with members of the
sophomore class on Monday to present them with the
opportunity to purchase class rings. All students
received a packet of information regarding rings and the
manner in which rings can be customized for our
students. The school provides this opportunity to meet
with Balfour with no stings attached. Students and
parents may opt to purchase a ring elsewhere or not at
all. Because of the tremendous cost, Balfour requires a
$60.00 deposit for those who purchase a ring through
their company. The representative will return on
Thursday, April 4, to take orders during students' lunch
period. Please make checks payable to Balfour.
The baseball teams opened its district schedule with two
highly contested games at home against Riverside and at
Milan. The Riverside game ended with a grand slam home
run by Chris Wall to give the Rebels an 11-9 victory in
the 7-inning contest. Extra innings were needed for the
Rebels to defeat Milan 16-12 in twelve innings. The game
had a definite ebb and flow as the Bulldogs and Rebels
took turns holding the lead until Taylor Holland drilled
a double in the top of the twelfth for the Rebels to
take the lead for good. Chris Wall was impressive with
relief work for five innings, giving up only three runs,
two of them unearned. This week the Rebels are scheduled
to play at home against top-ranked Lexington on Tuesday
(April 2), at home against Bruceton on Wednesday, at
Camden on Thursday, and at home against Westview on
Friday. The boys currently have a 4-3 record.
The girls softball team also had a good week with two
wins against South Fulton and Milan. The team defeated
the always challenging South Fulton team by the score of
5-1 with Summer Poff getting the victory and Whitney
Townes supplying the fire power with her first home run
of the year. In the Milan game, freshman Brittany
Carpenter threw well in leading the team to a 3-2
victory at Milan against the much-improved Lady
Bulldogs. In the Waverly tournament last weekend, the
Lady Rebels defeated Houston High School while losing to
Sycamore. This tournament generally has some of the best
teams in the state in competition and foreshadows how
well we can compete against stiff competition. The
tournament was rained out completely on Saturday. This
week the girls will play Huntingdon on Monday (April 1)
at home, at Bruceton on Wednesday, at Camden on
Thursday, and at home against Henry County on Friday.
The tennis teams have played two matches this year
against Huntingdon and Camden. Against Huntingdon the
boys won four matches and lost three. The girls won two
matches and lost six. Against Camden the boys won all
four matches that were played while the girls managed
one win out of seven matches. Members of the boys' team
include Andrew Bateman, Jesse King, Matt Lewis, David
King, and Daniel Duncan. Members of the girls' team are
Jadrea Allen, Michelle Chandel, Robyn Winkler, Jessica
Johnson, Michelle Moody, Wendy Chandler, and Brittany
Wallace. This week the teams play at home against Henry
County at 3:30 on Thursday and against Lexington at 3:30
on Friday at the City Park Courts.
The basketball team will have its banquet on Friday,
April 5, at 7:00 P.M. in the high school cafeteria. At
this banquet, we will celebrate the accomplishments of
our girls' and boys' teams and our cheerleaders. Parents
are invited to attend the banquet at a cost of $6.50 per
ticket. The McKenzie Rebounders Club sponsors this event
and provides the decorations, food for players and
school officials, and other items. Coach Ridley, Coach
Smith, and Ms. Plunk will recognize players and
lettermen. Time McBride will serve as emcee.
Approximately 28 students and 3 chaperones are attending
the annual Beta Club Convention at the Opryland Hotel in
Nashville. Students will compete and actively
participate in all parts of the Beta Club Convention
experience. For the past several weeks, students have
been working on their scrapbook and banner to place in
competition. They have also created a skit to perform
for the convention in support of Ryan Lacey who is
seeking the Beta Club presidency at the state level.
Ryan has busily mounted her campaign in preparation for
the convention which will run from April 1- April 3. It
is an exciting time when our students engage actively in
the statewide level in competition.
The McKenzie Band Boosters will sponsor a Tiny Tot
Beauty Pageant at the high school on Saturday, April 6.
The age divisions for boys and girls are as follows:
0-12 months, 13-23 months, 2-3 years, and 4-6 years.
Categories for judging are Beauty, Eyes, Best Dressed,
and Most Photogenic. The beauty contest itself has a
$15.00 entry fee with $5.00 for each additional
category. Checks should be made payable to the McKenzie
Band Boosters which will use the proceeds to promote the
instrumental music program at McKenzie High School and
McKenzie Middle School. The April Beauties Pageant will
be this Saturday at 2:00 P.M. at the high school
auditorium with registration at 1:00 P.M.
Congratulations to senior basketball player Rory Lacey.
Rory recently received the honor of being selected to
the All-State basketball team for the AA - Honorable
Mention. This year Rory averaged 17.3 points per game as
the Rebels finished third in the district and had a
14-15 record overall. |
