Spring is an exciting time at MES. With TCAP tests
finishing last Thursday, it's time to get back to the
regular classroom routine including fun spring
activities.
Third grade had a math championship last Friday. They
drew up a bracket and started playing using addition,
subtraction, multiplication, and division flashcards.
Mrs. Charlotte Verner's students played against Mrs.
Suzanne Howell's class for the championship and won.
Fourth grade students have been studying flight in their
science classes. Last Friday, all fourth graders walked
to the middle school stadium and individually dropped
parachutes, which they had designed. Two students from
each class received a certificate for the design that
remained in flight the longest. They were as follows:
Mrs. Warren's class - Andrew Doster, Shakeya Osler; Mrs.
Campbell' class - Gracie Tabor, Karissa Beecroft; Mrs.
Smith's class - Quentin Bowden, Alex Spencer; Mrs.
Witty's class - Andrew Mayhew, Joseph Chapman.
The overall "longest flight" champions were 1st Joseph
Chapman, 2nd Andrew Mayhew, 3rd Karissa Beecroft.
Rebel Singers have resumed early morning practices in
preparation for their participation in the spring
musical production. They are also scheduled to perform
for the Kiwanis club on Wednesday, May 1 at the
Smokehouse Restaurant at 12:30 P.M.
Fourth graders will be travelling to Jackson on
Wednesday, April 10th for their annual Diamond Jaxx
game. Special thanks to Coach McCaleb and Ms. Darlene
for planning this trip each year.
Report cards for the 5th six weeks go home on Thursday,
April 11th.
Friday, April 12th is annual Kindergarten registration
from 7 a.m. - 6 p.m.
PTO will meet on Monday, April 15th at 7:00 P.M. The
program will be presented by third grade.
Mark Newman was last week's announcer. Thanks Mark for a
great job.
Until next time . . .

Twenty-eight members of the McKenzie Beta Club attended
the state convention last week at the Opryland Hotel in
Nashville from April 1-3. Students participated in
several activities including the scrapbook, banner,
scholastic, and oratorical contests. Junior Ryan Lacey
ran for the statewide Beta Club presidency, delivered a
campaign speech and led a skit with all attending
McKenzie Betas in support of her candidacy. Although she
did not win, she did well and our club represented
itself well at the convention. Benjamin Martin and
Matthew Holt won first place in the Talent Contest in
special groups. They are eligible to go to Orlando,
Florida, in June for the national competition. The
Scrapbook Committee had its entry win third place in the
state. This group was chaired by Sydney Patterson and
these members contributed to its design: Alissa Lee,
Rosannah Qasem, and Rebekah Cooper. Beta Sponsors Dawn
Clubb, Jo Elam, and Zia McKennie have worked tirelessly
to make the convention experience a positive one for the
students. All these sponsors complimented our students
for their conducts, Beta spirit, and representation of
McKenzie High School.
In softball action last week, the Lady Rebels edged the
Lady Mustangs last Monday in an exciting game by a score
of 2-1. Junior Summer Poff pitched well against the Lady
Mustangs with seven strong innings of work. Sophomore
Brittany Russell banged a single into left field to push
across the winning run in the bottom of the seventh
inning. Last Wednesday the Lady Rebels traveled to
Bruceton to do battle with the Lady Tigers. Freshman
Brittany Carpenter pitched a sparkling no-hitter
allowing two base runners on a walk and an error in
improving her personal record to 4-1. Brittany struck
out 18 out of 21 batters in less than ideal weather
conditions. On Thursday, the Lady Rebels fell to
powerful Camden by a score of 4-0. The Lady Rebels hurt
themselves with six errors and were unable to hit
against the Lady Lion hurler. This marked the first
district loss for the Lady Rebels. On Friday, the Lady
Rebels stepped out of the district to play AAA neighbor
Henry County. Playing a solid game, the Lady Rebels
posted a 4-3 win to raise their record to 10-3. This
week the Lady Rebels play Riverside at home on Monday
(April 8), at Waverly on Tuesday, at home against
Humbolt on Thursday, and at Covington on Friday and
Saturday in Tournament action.
The baseball team also had a busy schedule last week. On
Tuesday, the Rebels battled the pre-season top-ranked
team in the state, the Lexington Tigers. The Tigers
proved their pre-season ranking as they consistently hit
the ball for a 19-5 victory at City Park. On Wednesday,
the Rebels had better results against the visiting
Bruceton Tigers. The Rebels scored 10 runs to squeak out
a 1-run victory. Winning pitcher was Chris Wall. On
Thursday, the Rebels traveled to Camden in district
competition. They built a lead only to see the Lions
overcome it as the Rebels lost 9-7. They evened their
district record to 2-2. On Friday, the Rebels faced a
very tough Westview squad. They lost by a score of 8-4.
Their season record now stands at 5-6 with three games
scheduled this week: at Lexington on Monday (April 8),
at Clarksburg on Tuesday, and at home against Union City
on Thursday.
Several of our students attended the annual Career
Development Conference in Jackson on April 4. The
students attend the Carroll County Technology Center in
Huntingdon and are members of the Tennessee Career
Association sponsored by Mrs. Brenda Patterson. Junior
Nicole Clark placed third in the Employment Interview
event and junior Ganna Vest placed third in the Team
Challenge event with her team. The Carroll County
Technology Center in Huntingdon serves as a source for
our students to satisfy technical pathway requirements.
The teachers at the center provide our students with a
background into several vocational/trade careers and
prepare them for immediate employability or for
placement in post-secondary training at one of the
technology centers or academic colleges or universities.
We appreciate Principal Mary Mays and her staff for
their work with the 40-50 students who attend classes a
half-day in Huntingdon to take classes that we do not
offer here on campus.
Members of Ms. Corbin's art class have submitted art
work for display at the Congressional Art Competition in
Huntingdon this week. Those submitting work include
Christopher Hinton, Sarah Ozment, Ramon Padilla, Matt
Lewis, Kent Ozment, Zachary Hammond, and Ryan Hensley.
These students will compete against students across the
county in an event sponsored by the congressional office
of John Tanner. Ms. Corbin consistently displays student
art at school, and we appreciate the opportunity to show
our students' abilities in a larger setting. Their art
work will be on display at the Carroll County Library in
Huntingdon.
The track team had a week off in preparation for two
meets this week. On Monday, April 8, the team was
scheduled to travel to Jackson Central Merry. On
Thursday of this week they journey to Brownville to
compete in the Haywood County meet. The track team has
grown to the point that we generally have the maximum
entrants for each event. Our squads do run in the
hurdles and do quite well, even though we do not have a
full set of hurdles ourselves. In our last meet in
Lexington our boys finished fourth and our girls fifth
out of the six teams present. Nearly all the schools
present are AAA schools or schools with long-standing
track programs. Coach David Duncan began the program
last year and has done a commendable job in building the
program so that we have 30-35 students interested in
track and field.
On Thursday, April 4, McKenzie High School's tennis team
had a match with Henry County. Andrew Bateman, David
King, and doubles team, Matt Lewis and Daniel Duncan
picked up three wins against a strong Henry County team.
The boys' team finished at 3-5 and the girls were 0-8.
On Friday, April 5, the girls' team had their first win
of the season against Lexington scoring 5-3. Robyn
Winkler and Jadrea Allen won in both singles and
doubles. Jessica Johnson and Brittany Wallace also won
their singles matches. Andrew Bateman and Matt Lewis won
their singles matches to score two wins for the boys'
team. Their score was 2-5. The next match will be
Tuesday, April 9, in Camden.
Several items of interest include these upcoming events:
- On Wednesday, April 10, the Balfour representative
will return to take late orders or collect deposits
from those who may have forgotten their money for
class rings ordered last week.
- On Monday, April 15, we will have a voter
registration opportunity for our students who are 18
years of age or are near their 18th birthday.
- On Tuesday, April 16, seventeen of our math
students will compete in the Math Contest at
Freed-Hardeman University in the areas of Algebra I,
Algebra II, geometry, and pre-calculus.
- On Saturday and Sunday, April 20-21, the drama
department will perform its spring play Tumbleweeds,
loosely based on the comic strip.
As always, we encourage parents and community members
attendance and participation in any event here at
school. Your support makes our school system better.
