Well, it's hard to believe that the school year is coming to an end. With four weeks remaining, there are many exciting things happening.

Mrs. Jill Warren's 4th grade class had a paper airplane race last week. Design and flight winners were 1st place - Justin Horton, 2nd place - John David Russell, 3rd place, Chelsea Powers.

To celebrate the completion of TCAP examinations, the 4th grade will be having a cookout at the city park on Thursday, April 25th from 10:30 - 12:30. Parents are welcome to attend.

The Accelerated Reader field trip is coming up. All 2nd - 4th grade students with 60 or more points will be travelling to Martin to the Cine' Theatre for a matinee.

Career Day will be held on Thursday, April 25th in Kindergarten and 2nd grade. Kindergarten will have visitors from 8:15 - 9:15 and in 2nd grade from 9:00 - 10:00. It should be an exciting day.

On April 30th, MES students will travel to UTM to participate in the annual Special Olympics competition. MES resource teachers will accompany them.

Last week, Kindergartner's Partner in Education, Brummitt Funeral Home, presented awards for the 5th six weeks of school. The award winners for Most Academically Improved were: Montryll Robinson and Zachary Morgan (Wilkes), Christopher Leach and Noah Ross (Roney), Mayra Jimenez and Brett Sampson (Kreuter), Abbi McCaleb and Lane Pressley (Perkins), Brice Webb and Dennis Coleman (Pate), and Juan Calderon and Leslie Foster (Jones). Until next time . . .

  Notes from the High School

By McKenzie High School Principal, Terry Howell

This Thursday we will recognize the accomplishments of many of our students at the annual Awards Day Program at 10:00 A.M. in the high school gymnasium. Brandon Trull and Ben Martin, the Student Council president and vice-president, will recognize students who have performed well in regard to academics, leadership, and athletics (Those not previously mentioned in banquets, news releases, etc.). I will also present many senior awards at this time and some awards that are community-based. The public is invited to attend this special program of recognition.

The softball team continued its impressive season with four victories last week. Last Monday they defeated Martin Westview in non-district action by a score of 14 - 8. They followed this victory with a District A-AA doubleheader victory over Riverside High School winning 7 - 3 and 13 - 5. The Lady Rebels were powered by the strong pitching of Summer Poff and Brittany Carpenter. They were led in hitting by Becky Toombs who slugged a home run against the Lady Panthers. On Thursday, the Lady Rebels faced their toughest opponent of the week, the Lady Lions of Camden. The always competitive Camden team had beaten our team for several consecutive years and had earlier beaten us in Camden. Behind strong defense and pitching, the Lady Rebels broke its losing streak with a 3 - 2 victory, putting us at the lead in District 11AA. The Lady Rebels raised their overall record to 20 - 5, with only one loss in the district against 5 wins. This week we play at Huntingdon on Monday, at home against Milan on Tuesday, at South Fulton on Wednesday, and at Lexington on Thursday. The girls conclude the busy week with a doubleheader at home against Gleason on Saturday at 1:00 P.M.

The Rebel baseball team also had a busy week with several games played. On Monday, they defeated Milan for the second time this season. This time they won by a 12 - 4 score. This marks the first time that we have swept both games against Milan in many years. Continuing in district action on Wednesday, the Rebels fell to Camden 10 - 6. Their record in the district went to 4 - 3 with the loss. This week the Rebels also unleashed an offensive explosion with six home runs against Riverside High School in their district contest against the Panthers. The Rebels easily won the contest behind the firepower of homerun hitters Mitchell Hall, Jay Taylor, Chris Wall, Rory Lacey, Brian Toombs, and Taylor Holland. On Friday the Rebels played non-district foe Union City in a make-up game. The Rebels lost to the Golden Tornadoes 6 - 5.
This week the Rebels play at Bruceton on Monday, at Huntingdon on Wednesday, and at Westview on Thursday.

The Beta Club will induct twenty-two members into the organization on Sunday, April 28 at 3:00 P.M. Those being inducted into the club are Clinton Anderson, Julie Bennett, Jason Bloodworth, Jeff Bunn, Rachael Clark, Renee Crawley, Paul Edwards, Brigette Eubank, Kelly Fowler, Kimberly Gaskins, Virginia Hames, Elise Hayes, Megan Hutchison, Randy Lacey, Crystal Mann, Nicole Parham, Carol Perritt, Lee Russell, Jordan Trull, Sara Wilson, Andrew Wilson, and Whitney Wilson. The Beta Club is a national honor organization that focuses on academic excellence, community service, and the promotion of ethical and moral principles. Our local Beta Club is quite active assisting the school at Parent-Teacher Conference, participating and competing at the state Beta Club Convention, and performing areas of community service. Our Beta Club sponsors are Dawn Clubb, Jo Elam, and Zia McKennie. This year's club has had the capable leadership of Amanda Mansfield.

Many members of our middle school and high school band have a day trip planned to Six Flags in St. Louis. These students sold Domino coupon booklets in helping fund the trip. Approximately 40 people will travel to St. Louis early on Saturday, April 27 on a chartered bus to enjoy a full day of fun at Six Flags. They will return late that night to McKenzie. The instrumental band program at the two schools allows students to develop their musical talents, to learn the value of teamwork and cooperation, and to compete individually and collectively as musicians representing their band and this school. The band program is directed by Keith Breeden. Our active Band Booster Club is led by Joel Washburn with assistance from many parents and patrons. The Band Boosters support the band through their sponsorship of activities like this, through the running of the concession stand during football season, through the chaperoning of trips to ballgames, competitions, and parades, and through many fund raisers to upgrade the standard and quality of the program. I publicly salute them for their tireless work.

Upcoming school-wide dates to put on calendars include the following:
Thursday, April 25 @ 10:00 A.M. Awards Day
Friday, April 26 Fish Fry Parade
Saturday, May 4 @ 7:00 P.M. Prom
Friday, May 10 Strawberry Festival Parade
Sunday, May 12 @ 8:00 P.M. Baccalaureate
Friday, May 17 @ 8:00 P.M. Graduation

The track team participated in three meets last week. At the JCM meet the team placed third overall, one of the strongest showings by our two-year program. The good part of this is that we have athletes competing in nearly all events, which improves our ability to score points. At the USJ meet on Thursday both teams finished 6th out of the 16 teams competing. Again, we competed against much larger schools -- many of them AAA, but we managed to do well in overall point totals. On Saturday, the team went to Murray, Kentucky, for a meet involving many schools from West Tennessee and western Kentucky.

On Tuesday, April 16, seventeen students competed in the Freed-Hardeman Math Contest at Henderson. Each category of competition had approximately 40 students involved. In the pre-calculus division, Jesse King placed 5th. In geometry Jake Smith placed 5th, and Matt Jones and Ryan Drewry placed 9th. In team competition in Algebra II, Heather Flippin, Andrew Cross, and Mallory Brandon won 2nd place honors. In geometry, Julie Smith, Matthew Jones, Matthew Holt, and Ryan Drewry won 2nd overall. Congratulations to these students for representing us well.

School will not be in session on Friday, April 26. Our band will compete in the Fish Fry Parade and our McKenzie High School royalty will participate as well.
