Notes From the High School |
|
| |
| |
|
By MHS Principal Terry Howell |
| |
The first week of school had its usual hectic
moments, but by week's end students and teachers had
begun to settle in to the routine of our schedule. Our
enrollment fluctuated during the week as new students
and transfers enrolled and other students were dropped
after we learned that they had moved. The high school
enrollment averaged 372 students - an increase from our
end-of-the-year count. The freshmen class had increased
so much - up to 114 - that we had to add an additional
homeroom to split the numbers. Because the high school
helped to absorb two positions within the system, our
schedule is somewhat tight, but students still have the
opportunity to take a variety of classes. On our 4 x 4
block schedule, students can take 8 different classes
per year, and as juniors and seniors, they can travel to
the Carroll County Vocational-Technical School in
Huntingdon or take certain vocational/technical classes
at the Tennessee Technology Center in McKenzie and
Paris. Those in the university path can look at taking
college classes off-campus if their needs are not met
here. Our interest is to meet student needs any way
possible.
During the first week, students also elected class
officers for the year. The sophomore class selected the
following slate of officers: Rachael Clark, president;
Virginia Hames, vice-president; Heidi Thomas, secretary;
Carol Perritt, treasurer; Brandi Burke, student council
representative; and Renee Crawley, parliamentarian. The
junior class elected these officers: Bryan Huffman,
president; Amber King, vice-president; Mallory Brandon,
secretary; Heather Flippin, treasurer; Brittani Bright,
parliamentarian; and Sarah Hartz, student council
representative. The honor of representing the seniors
fell to these students: Jay Taylor, president; Matt
Merrick, vice-president; Julie Smith, secretary; Brian
Winston, treasurer; Matt Jones, student Council
representative; and Becky Toombs, reporter. Freshmen
results have not been tallied. These students will lead
their respective classes during the school year. The
junior and senior classes will rely heavily upon their
officers for leadership and those two classes have a
number of activities. The Student Council had already
elected their officers for the year with Ryan Lacey
serving as president, Jay Taylor as vice-president,
Jasmine McMackins as secretary, Amber King as treasurer,
Matt King as reporter, and John Howell as
parliamentarian. The Student Council oversees
assemblies, intramural sports, homecoming, and many
other activities affecting student life at our school.
The golf teams played Dresden, Greenfield, and Gibson
County in a 4-way match last Wednesday. The girls lost
to all three opponents, but only narrowly to Greenfield
by a single stroke. The boys lost to Dresden by six
strokes but did defeat Greenfield and Gibson County to
post a 2-1 record. Freshman Marshall Smith, playing his
first high school match, was the McKenzie medalist with
a 42. All eight of our young players shot 47 or below.
This bodes well for the future of these up-and-coming
players. This week the teams play at Carroll Lake on
Tuesday against Gleason and Camden and at Carroll Lake
on Thursday against Huntingdon and Clarksburg. On Monday
of next week they travel to Camden to take on Camden and
Huntingdon.
The football team ended its pre-season informal
scrimmages against Southside at Jackson. The
inexperienced Rebels have played many people in
preparation for the upcoming campaign. The last segment
of pre-season will be the Huntingdon Jamboree this
Friday at 7:00 P.M. The Rebels will play Martin Westview
in Game 1 to begin the jamboree. This game is a rematch
of the semi-finals of the state playoffs last year. I
encourage all McKenzie fans who plan to attend the game
to purchase their tickets in advance as all this money
stays in our McKenzie football account. If you purchase
at the gate, we only get 1/8 of the amount after
expenses. For tickets, see any of our players or coaches
or come to the office. Admission price in advance is
$4.00.
As with last year, we will continue to stress writing
across the curriculum by doing writing assessments in
each class every two weeks. This activity will take
about 25-30 minutes per assessment. The teachers will
use a writing prompt provided by the English department
and write a 5-paragraph persuasive essay in reply to the
prompt. Teachers are to grade the prompt using the
standard supplied by the English department. Ms. Dawn
Clubb has been largely instrumental in providing
teachers with the prompts, suggestions for teaching
persuasive writing, the grading format, and the
conversion scale. Our writing scores did improve last
year. We look for more progress this year as students
begin their second year of focusing on persuasive
writing.
The McKenzie Band Boosters will host a car wash and bake
sale on Saturday, August 24 at the E.W. James store in
McKenzie from 8:00 A.M. to 3:00 P.M. All proceeds are to
support the instrumental music program at McKenzie
Middle School and McKenzie High School. The Band
Boosters will also have its annual barbeque supper
sponsored by E.W. James. Band members will begin selling
tickets for this event this week. The dinner will
include a plate of pit barbeque, slaw, beans, chips, and
a soft drink for the very reasonable price of $5.00 a
plate. McKenzie High School and the McKenzie Band
Boosters appreciate the patronage and support of store
manager Eric Cooper and E.W. James and Sons. They have
supported our band for years and we appreciate all that
they do for the approximately 100 students who
participate in the band programs at the middle and high
schools.
