Notes From the High School |

By MHS Principal Terry Howell |

Our young golf team continued play last week with two
matches at the Carroll Lake Golf Course. The girls
evened their overall record to 3-3 after their defeat of
Huntingdon and Clarksburg on Thursday. Courtney Creasy
was the medalist for the girls on Thursday with a 60.
The boys' record improved to 6-1 after the two matches.
The team's 4 player count on Thursday was 168. Medalist
for both matches was junior John French who shot 39 and
37. Typical of their play was the consistent score of
the players. On Thursday, Mark Anderson scored a 45;
Beau Brown, 46; Jake Brown, 44; Craig Broadbent, 46;
John French, 37; J.C. Johnsonius 45; Marshall Smith, 42;
and Justin Wilson, 45. This week they are scheduled to
play Camden and Huntingdon at Camden on Monday, Gleason
and Westview at Carroll Lake on Tuesday, and Bolivar and
Riverside at Tennessee River on Thursday.
The freshmen selected the following students as class
officers: Marquice Tharpe, president; Courtney Creasy,
vice-president; Kayla Taylor, secretary; Rema Salemah,
treasurer; Marshall Smith, student council
representative; Courtney Wiggins, Parliamentarian; and
Whitney Hopper, reporter. The Renaissance Club also
selected its organization's leaders for the year. They
selected the following: Brittani Bright, president;
Joseph Winchester, vice-president; Zack Hammond,
secretary; Chris Hinton, treasurer; and Autumn Pruiett,
Student Council representative. This club plays an
extremely important role in our school. Not only does it
support the arts, but it supplies backdrops and
decorations for homecoming, special photography days,
assistance in prom decorations, helping with the spring
play, and several other areas that allow students to
express themselves creatively. The Renaissance Club has
Glynda Corbin as its sponsor.
The football team played Martin Westview in the
Huntingdon Jamboree last Friday night. A strong
entourage of fans followed the team to play Game One in
the Jamboree. The Rebels played well in the two-quarter
event, but fell short by a 14-6 score. Westview scored
on a fumble that was returned for a touchdown and on a
59-yard run by all-state back Rafael Hill. Outside of
the two big plays, the Rebels more than held their own
and gave a respectable showing in a game in which
coaches are reluctant to show too much to future
opponents. The offensive line and defense showed
particular improvement in what coaches hope is a sign
for the future. This week the Rebels play their season
opener against the Rebels of Obion County. The
non-regional game will be played at Troy at 7:30 P.M.
The Rebels of Obion County promise to be an improved
team with a wide-open offense. Our team will need to be
prepared against a team that tested them in Game One of
last year. Next week we will have our home opener
against Camden on September 6. I encourage everyone to
make plans to follow the Rebels as they do battle each
Friday night.
As I stated in last week's article, the Balfour
representative will be here on Wednesday, August 28, to
deliver class rings to our juniors. He will be here from
11:00 A.M. to 1:00 P.M. during the times lunch is
scheduled. Balances due are posted in the hallways, and
parents probably have received information regarding the
amounts owed. The Balfour representative will only
accept cash or a money order for the final payment. Any
junior or senior who has not ordered a class ring, but
would like to purchase one on this day may do so. Those
students will need a $60.00 deposit to secure their
order. Balfour rings come with a lifetime guarantee and
their work is of the highest quality. Our school
provides the accessibility of our school to Balfour as a
courtesy and does not receive any commission or
compensation.
On Tuesday, August 27, the junior class met with a
representative of Q.S.P., which sponsors our annual
Junior Class Magazine Sales Drive. Students will sell
magazines to help fund the expense of the Junior-Senior
Prom and other class expenses that they will have when
they become seniors. A goal of 700 magazines has been
set. Each junior is expected to sell a minimum of 7
magazines so that he/she will not have to pay money to
attend the prom or have a senior class expense. Q.S.P.
offers 100's of magazines at premium prices. As juniors
try to make these sales, please consider purchasing one
or two. Also, you may renew your subscription though the
magazine sales drive. The school receives approximately
40% of the amount that is collected. The drive will last
two weeks. Students may exempt themselves from class
expense and win cash and prizes for making sales.
We do have several other important dates coming up in
the near future. They are as follows:
September 2 Labor Day Holiday
September 10 Emergency Exercise by Carroll County
Emergency Management
September 10 E.W.James BBQ Supper for the Band
4-6:30 P.M.
September 11 School Day Photograph - Pre-pay
envelope method
September 12 Parent-Teacher Conference/Progress
Reports 3:30-7:00 P.M.
Tenia King has again agreed to serve as our cross county
coach. This year we are adding boys cross country to our
list of sports. Ms. King is busy getting necessary
physicals and insurance releases along with information
to parents about going to meets. Cross Country offers
students the chance to run over natural terrain about
three miles with various slopes, hills, valleys, etc.
Ms. King is finalizing the cross country schedule for
the season. Last year we went to about six meets plus
the district meet. Students generally use the campus as
their practice area and train after school.
