Alex Massulo, James Tucker, Kelsey Schweitzer and Chase Mitchell showed their knowledge in the Quiz Bowl (answer seventy-two question in twenty minutes on a variety of subjects). Although they did not come home with a trophy, the students competed on a high level. Accompanying the students were the sponsors: Jennifer Ognibene, Martha Peters, Sally Shymkiw and Melody McClain.   Notes From the High School

By Terry Howell
McKenzie High School Principal

Last summer the State Legislature decided to fund the various Governor's School for high schools after a hiatus of a year. The various Governor's Schools are for high school students who meet the requirements set by the state in regard to academic standing, course work prerequisites, age, and motivation as measured by teachers' letters of recommendation. This summer the state will offer Governor's Schools for the Arts, Humanities, International Studies, Science, Tennessee Heritage, Prospective Teachers, and Manufacturing. If accepted, students will attend the Governor's School at the college location of that school for approximately a month. For example the Governor's School for the Humanities will be at the University of Tennessee at Martin from June 15 -- July 12. The other schools are spread on college campuses throughout the state at roughly the same time. Students interested need to see Mrs. Herrin. The deadline for submitting applications must have a postmark no later than Friday, January 10, 2003. The Governor's School is an excellent way for students to interact with other students and gifted teachers across the state.

This week we will have our end-of-term semester exams. On Thursday, December 19, we will take our First and Fourth Block tests. On Friday, December 20, we will have our Second and Third Block tests. These cumulative tests will measure mastery of the course taken. The test itself will count 20% of that particular course's overall grade. Students exempt from tests may leave after homeroom on Thursday provided they have a note from parents and leave the campus. Only students taking the tests on Friday are required to be at school on Friday. The exemption status is earned if that student is passing the class and has missed no more than one day in a class through Thursday. All students are expected to be at school through Thursday. Vocational students will attend the Carroll County Technical Vocational Center in Huntingdon through Wednesday, December 18. Students required to take tests who miss the tests will need a doctor's excuse. Friday, December 20 is a half-day for students. Bus students will be dismissed at approximately 11:15 and drivers and pick-ups are dismissed at 11:20. Students should clear all fines, expenses, and obligations prior to the administration of the test.

Classes will resume at McKenzie High School on Monday, January 6. Students will report to homeroom at 8:00 A.M. to be assigned new classes for the second semester. Report cards will be issued on January 7.

The Honors Chorus under the direction of Ms. Dawn Clubb performed at the McKenzie Health Care Center on Monday, December 16. The twenty-four member chorus performed "Alleluia Canon" by Mozart, "Madrigal of Joy" by Spevacek, Pachelbel's "Canon of Peace," "Holiday Favorites" by Emerson, and "Deck the Hall and Decorate" by Schram. The Honor Chorus has practiced and rehearsed during homeroom for about two or three days per week since the start of school. They have performed at pep rallies, at ball games, at our Veterans Day program, and in the community. Students had to audition to perform in this exclusive performing arts troupe.

Region 6-2A coaches met on Wednesday, December 11, to determine all-region performers for the 2002 season. Our football team's season is typified by the ten players chosen to the all-region team. On offense, we had the following players chosen: Brian Winston, lineman; Jay Taylor, receiver; and John Kermit Laughrey, kicker. On defense we had these players picked: Matt Merrick, lineman; John Craig Howell and Brad Campbell, linebackers; and Daniel Duncan and Matt Jones, defensive backs. Honorable mention all-region include Daniel Beal, Andrew Cross, Demerick Diggs, Randy Lacey, and Kris Sydnor. Cody Cook, our sophomore record-setting running back, was named the Most Valuable Offensive Player Award. Senior Ricky Mathis, our Mr. Football Lineman nominee, was named the region's Player of the Year. Congratulations to all of these young men for outstanding individual seasons.

Our girls' basketball team suffered its first loss of the season against cross-county foe Huntingdon last Tuesday. Both teams played aggressively with the game marked by several turnovers by both squads. The Fillies inside strength of rebounding and deadly free-throw shooting spelled defeat for the Lady Rebels by a 34-27 margin. On Friday, the girls' team defeated the Lady Panthers of Parsons Riverside to win their opening district game. After racing out to a 17-7 first quarter lead, the Lady Rebels had to hold off the determined Lady Panthers. Jasmine McMackins and Becky Toombs led the scorers with 13 and 11 points respectively. On Saturday, the Lady Rebels easily defeated Big Sandy by a score of 52-31. Renee Crawley and Kristin Wiggins scored 13 and 10 points respectively to pace the scorers. The Lady Rebels' record improved to 4-1 with the win.

The boys also found the going tough against the Mustangs of Huntingdon. Still showing the effects of little pre-season preparation, the Rebels fell behind early with the Mustang's torrid shooting. The half-time margin of 34-11 was too big a deficit to overcome, and the Rebels fell 57-29 to put their non-district record at 0-3. The Rebels lost to Riverside on Friday 57-50 despite 19 points from John French and 11 points by Daniel Duncan. After leading early, the Rebels fell behind at half time and could never get the momentum to overcome the Panthers. On Saturday, the boys played their best game of the year in trouncing Big Sandy by a score of 84-47. Daniel Duncan, Bryan Huffman, John French, and Clint Anderson all scored 11 points. The Rebels turned the game with a 20-0 second quarter blitz. In winning their first game, the Rebels improved to 1-4 for the season.

This week the two teams play on Tuesday night at home against Dresden and on Friday night at Clarksburg. On Saturday, the girls will travel to play in the Heath Christmas Tournament in Kentucky. Both teams will return after Christmas to play in the Huntingdon Point Guard Tournament during the period of December 26-28.

Several members of the MHS Band auditioned and won acceptance as members of the 2002 All West Tennessee Honors Band. Over 1200 students from across the area including Memphis auditioned Saturday at Union City High School hoping to be a part of the prestigious band. On the senior high level (grade 10-12), Matthew Holt was selected as 6th chair percussion in the Wind Ensemble Band. Chase Barton was selected 6th chair Blue Band as a tuba player. Rebekah Cooper was selected as 21st chair Red Band as a clarinet player. Also MHS freshman David Deaton was 5th chair Red Band as a trumpet player. These students will be traveling to Jackson at the end of February to rehearse with the other selected musicians from West Tennessee to perform a public concert on the campus of Jackson Central Merry. Congratulations to these four musicians for their hard work and being recognized as the best on their individual instruments.

The Tennessee Tomorrow Club of McKenzie High School has collected approximately $175 to $200 worth of toiletries for the victims of the recent tornado that struck south Carroll County. Toothpaste, soap, shampoo, razors, toilet paper and other items have been collected for the past several weeks. McKenzie's Drivers Education teacher, Coach Randy Thomas, will deliver the two boxes of goods to the Red Cross office in Huntingdon this week to be distributed to the ones in need. The Tennessee Tomorrow Club is composed of students enrolled in social studies courses. The club is organized to teach students about local and state governments and provide students with opportunities to become involved in community service projects. A project last year was "Sock It To Terrorism." Students collected socks and gloves for the volunteers that were working at "Ground Zero" after the terrorists' attack on 9-11. The sponsor of the Tennessee Tomorrow Club is Richard Chappell.

This posting will be the final one until our return after the holiday. To everyone, McKenzie High School wishes a safe, restful, and meaningful holiday season.
