The Citizen of the Month Program was held this past
Friday at McKenzie Elementary School with Mr. Terry
Howell as the guest speaker. Representatives from the
Kiwanis Club were Myrna Johnson and Mary Maloane.
Clayton Owen represented the Rotary Club. Dennis Simpson
presented flags to each student on behalf of the Woodman
of the World organization. The students who were
recognized as good citizens are: Juan Calderon, Shawn
Phipps, Katie Giles, Tori Tims, Brooke Baucum, Cheyenne
Smith, Kelsey Sellers, Shelby Cook, Brook Flowers,
Olivia Pate, Courtney Parham, Tiffany Jenks, Ashley
Reyes, Luke Robertson, Drake Cunningham, Daniela
Mejarodo, Laura Warren, Heather Manley, Kelsey Carr,
Christina Davis, Leslie Shell, Jace Hargrove, Randi
Bunyard, Wendy Cude, John David Russell, Austin Taylor
and Mary Nethaway. Congratulations to these students.
On February 19, a Parent Involvement Meeting was held at
the school. Parents and students attending enjoyed
pizza, cookies, and soft drinks. Following the meal,
teachers Ann Conquest, Martha Putman and Sarah Freeman
invited parents and students to the computer lab to
present some of the many computer tools they use with
the students to teach reading and math. Students enjoyed
showing their parents some of the educational games they
play.
During the week of February 11-15, guidance counselor
Mrs. Beckie Smith had teachers submit random acts of
kindness students had displayed. Mrs. Smith recognized
these students by reading over the intercom what act of
kindness they had done.
The Jump Rope for Heart was successful once again
this year. Students and staff collected approximately
$5500 for the American Heart Association. Darlene Bowlin
and Matt McCaleb coordinated this event. All funds go
directly to the American Heart Association.
Lisa Attebury was recognized this week because she had
accumulated 100 points in the school's Accelerated
Reading Program. This is quite an accomplishment.
In other news, Olympic events have been going on in
Mrs. Malissa's second grade math class. To compete in
the Olympics, the students had to have a keen knowledge
of standard and metric units of measurement. Events such
as the Paper Plate Division, the Straw Javelin, the Long
Jump, the Bean Grab, and the One-Handed Sponge Squeeze
made for very heated competition.
On February 21, the kindergarten classes at McKenzie
Elementary School were again visited by their Partner in
Education, Brummitt Funeral Home. Twenty-four youngsters
received awards. Those receiving the Peacemaker Award
were Jacob Eaton and Harley Higgs from Mrs. Amy Wilkes'
room; Tori Tims and Terriann Schukert from Ms. Amy
Roney's room; Katelyn Ridley and Brandon Perry from Mrs.
Marlene Kreuter's room; Ashley Barker and Christopher
Allen from Mrs. Brandi Turman (Daela Perkins) room;
Cassidy Wren and Manuel Jimenez from Mrs. Gina Pate's
room and Michael Tedder and Chasidy Robinson from Mrs.
Jeannette Jones' room. Music Awards were also presented
as follows: Roxanne Becerra, Darren Holbrook, Kevin
Beck, Michael Keenan, Angelina Curtis, Quincy Johnson,
Tyiesha Robinson, Dylan True, Darius Edmonson, Savannah
Pratt, James Walden and Morgan Jarrett. The students
were thrilled with their awards and prizes provided by
Brummitt's.
Read Across America will be Friday, March 1. This day
is set aside to focus on reading. Schools all across
America will be hosting activities that promote reading.
McKenzie Elementary School will be having many
activities as well. Parents and guests have been invited
to read to classrooms. The PTO will be providing donuts
for Dads and muffins for Moms. Senator Roy Herron will
be at the school at 2:00 p.m. to read from his books to
third and fourth grade students. Librarian Mrs. Beth
Wilcoxson is the coordinator for this event.
The Penny Harvest competition will end February 28.
Many pennies have already been collected. The class with
the most pennies will be rewarded with a pizza party.
The McKenzie Elementary School PTO is sponsoring this
activity. All pennies collected will be used for the
students.
The announcer for the week of February 20-22 was
Jaron Hughes from Mrs. Tiffany Smith's class. Jaron led
the school in the Pledge of Allegiance each day and read
the morning statement about this month's character theme
"Caring" over the intercom, Jaron did a great job! |

The basketball season ended last week with our girls'
and boys' teams losing in the First Round of the Region
6-AA Tournament at Bolivar. The girls played the Lady
Hawks of South Side last week and met with a
hot-shooting squad. The Lady Rebels fell behind 21-4 at
the end of the first quarter. They trailed 28-8 to the
end of the half. The Lady Hawks continued their
aggressive play with a 10-0 run to put the game out of
reach. To their credit, the Lady Rebels maintained their
intensity and cut the lead to a 10-point margin in the
fourth quarter, but time ran out on the comeback effort.
The Rebels played the Tigers of Bolivar Central on
Friday of last week. The Rebels showed grit and
determination in the first half. The score was tied at
the end of the first quarter, and Bolivar held a 30-16
halftime lead. However, the 7th ranked team in the state
turned up their play in the second half. The Tigers
showed lighting quickness on offense and defense to put
the game away and score a 70-32 victory. Several Lady
Rebels and Rebel players earned post-season honors for
their play this season. Meagan Bowlin and Amanda Barnes
placed on the All-District 11-AA for their season play.
Amanda and Becky Toombs were named to the All-Tournament
team for their efforts at the Milan Tournament. Rory
Lacey and Brandon Trull also earned All District 11-AA
for their season play. Rory was named the co-MVP for the
year in District 11-AA. Jonathan Adkisson made the
All-Tournament team for his efforts at Milan. Playing
their final game last week were seniors Amanda Barnes,
Meagan Bowlin, Jonathan Adkisson, Rory Lacey, and
Brandon Trull. Injured seniors include David Duncan,
Lindsey Jones, and Carone Tharpe. Cheering in their
final game were Jill Stambaugh and Kaci Mebane. McKenzie
High School appreciates the contributions of these
seniors to our sports program and applauds their
commitment to the school.
Many of our seniors will participate in the annual Job
Shadowing Day on Thursday, February 28. This experience
allows students to go out into the community and beyond
to follow someone in a field of employment of their
interest. Most of our seniors have contacted someone to
shadow and have completed the necessary paperwork to
participate in the program. Parents should have received
information and forms to sign granting permission for
their student to leave school to participate in this
great experience. If you have any questions, please call
Ms. Herrin at the high school for more information.
The football team will have its first spring scrimmage
game at Henry County this Friday after school. The team
began spring training last Thursday with 45 rising
sophomores, juniors, and seniors. This group is expected
to be joined by 19 rising freshmen in the summer for
weight lifting and conditioning. By TSSAA standards,
rising freshmen cannot participate in spring drills with
varsity players. These young men have already begun a
rigorous off-season program in preparation for next
fall. Football has become a year-round commitment if a
program wants to excel at a high level. McKenzie High
School is fortunate to have players and coaches that
have made that commitment for the past five years. Our
coaches are Wade Comer, David Duncan, Randy Thomas, and
Jason Driggers. Next week the team will scrimmage
Jackson South Side at home on Thursday, March 7, here at
the high school practice field.
This week I have posted flyers in the school to remind
seniors that the Balfour representative will be here on
Wednesday, March 6, from 11:05-1:00 to deliver
graduation invitations, cards, and supplies that
students ordered in the fall. The flyers have the
balance that seniors currently owe. Balfour has begun a
practice of billing parents directly to allow them to
pay in manageable increments. Many parents have taken
advantage of this service and have paid the entire bill.
For this final bill, Balfour requires students to bring
cash or money order. The company will not take personal
checks or credit cards for this final payment. The only
items not included in this delivery are caps and gowns
and diploma and diploma covers. This early delivery will
remind students to create their invitation list and
prepare invitations during the spring break.
Next week, we will take our nine weeks tests for this
semester. Students should begin the process of getting
materials and doing preliminary study for these
important tests which will be administered on Thursday,
March 7, and Friday, March 8. On March 7, students will
take their First and Third Block tests. On March 8, they
will have their Second Block and Fourth Block tests.
These tests count 25% of the grade for the first nine
weeks and should be taken seriously.
The only sport that we have at our school that is almost
totally year round is cheerleading. Mr. Christie Plunk
and her twelve spirit leaders have just completed
basketball season and are preparing for tryouts on
Friday, March 8. We have a sign-up sheet posted in the
office for those students who want to tryout. The
tryouts will be judged by an independent group hired for
their objectivity and fairness in determining the best
performers at the tryouts. Ms. Plunk expects responsible
behavior and conduct from her squad and will conduct a
meeting on Tuesday, March 5 at 6:30 at the high school
to discuss what being a cheerleader entails and what she
expects of a member of the squad.
On Saturday, March 2, the On-Deck Club and the Home Run
Club -- the softball and baseball boosters -- will
sponsor a Barbeque Plate lunch from 10:30 to 5:00 P.M.
Tickets for this homemade meal cost $5.00 and may be
purchased from members of the softball and baseball
teams or may be purchased by calling the school for
information. The plates include barbeque, cole slaw,
white beans, and rolls. The meals will be cooked at the
local V.F.W. and patrons may eat there or get their
orders to go. The baseball and softball seasons begin
the week of March 11. This fundraiser will go to support
those two spring sport activities with participation of
around 40 students. I encourage everyone to support this
fundraiser for the good food and the cause that it
helps. |
