Classes began jumping for the Annual "Jump Rope for
Heart" competition sponsored by the American Heart
Association. Mrs. Darlene Bowlin is in charge of the
program again this year.
Third grade is studying India. They made mosaics with
rice because rice is a major crop of India.
Mrs. Betsy Campbell's class is studying the solar
system. Working in groups assigned a specific planet, we
are learning and sharing information.
Fourth grade will be taking the TCAP Writing Assessment
on Tuesday of this week. We have been having "writing
days" throughout the year to better prepare for this
annual test.
Baby showers have been held for Mrs. Tammy Gordon and
Mrs. Dalia Perkins. Mrs. Gina Pate and Mrs. Denise
Pyburn have also had new additions to their families
this school year.
The announcers for last week and week before last were
Nathaniel Kincy, Sarah Brawner, and Savannah Kincaid.
They did a great job with the morning Pledge of
Allegiance and Citizenship pledge.
Until next time . . .

The high school will host its spring Parent-Teacher
Conference on Thursday, February 7, from 3:30 - 7:00
P.M. This conference marks the mid-point of the
nine-week grading period. Students in each class will
have a progress report to apprise parents of how well
the student is doing. On our 4 X 4 block schedule, it is
especially critical that academic problems are addressed
early. One class equals approximately two classes under
the traditional six or seven period day. We hope that we
have a record turn out for this important conference.
Earlier this month I sent letters to parents of students
who had to retake the Competency Test on February 26,
27. Ms. Anderson, our librarian, has the library and
writing lab available for those students to use on
Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 3:15 - 4:45.
Students who entered high school prior to this year must
pass the Competency Test to be eligible to receive a
regular high school diploma. We have a number of
tutorials and programs designed to assist students in
scoring at a level to earn mastery. Parents of students
eligible for this program may call me at my office for
more information.
The performance of the Great Pretenders by parents and
students involved with Project Graduation will be
Saturday and Sunday of this week (February 9, 10). The
performance will be at the Dickey Fine Arts Center at
Bethel College at 7:00 o'clock on Saturday and 2:00
o'clock on Sunday. Over 25 acts will be performed for
those in attendance ranging from pop to country to
rhythm and blues. These performers have worked
diligently the past three weeks to create a show that is
sure to be of a high quality. Tickets are available from
any senior, parents of seniors, or Project Graduation
organizers. Advanced tickets are $5.00 for general
admission and $7.00 for reserved seating. Call the
school office for more information. Proceeds will go
toward the alcohol and drug free celebration following
graduation on May 17.
The DECA group will begin its competitive season when
they travel to U.T.Martin to participate in the Regional
DECA contest. Students will compete in written
examinations, role playing, and written paper projects.
DECA has traditionally had positive results in regional
competition. This year 40 students will travel to Martin
for an opportunity to advance to the State DECA
Conference in Nashville on March 7 and 8. Our DECA
program and marketing teachers are Scott Jewell and
Jackie Carr.
Ms. Dianne Anderson and Mr. Dan Ridley along with his
journalism class have busily been upgrading the school
website. Ms. Anderson has added the schedules for
softball, baseball, and track. She will add tennis as
soon as that schedule is finalized. The page offers a
number of information tidbits for parents, alumni, and
friends of McKenzie High School. Mr. Ridley's class will
upgrade all parts of the Rebel Weekly before the end of
the week. The website for McKenzie High School is
www.mckenziehighschool.org.
The basketball teams played two games last week with
mixed results. The Lady Rebels lost to the Lady Bulldogs
of Milan last Tuesday in a low-scoring affair. Our
offense could not get on track against the tenacious
match-up zone of the Lady Bulldogs. The Rebels faced
stiff competition when they played the Bulldogs in the
second game of the night. After holding the Bulldogs to
a fairly close margin in the first half, the Rebels had
a poor third quarter and the Bulldogs seemed to hit all
cylinders. The pressure defense of Milan resulted in
numerous turnovers and offensive opportunities for our
district foe. On Friday, the teams again were on the
road against district rival Camden. The Lady Rebels
played a superb offensive and defensive game and
stretched the lead through each quarter. By defeating
the Lady Lions, our girls wrapped up third place in
District 11-AA and assured themselves a spot in the
regional tournament. The Rebels, decimated by injuries
to key players, confronted a hot-shooting Lions team.
The first quarter set the tone for the game as Camden
could not miss from the inside or the perimeter. By the
end of the first half, the Lions had a comfortable lead
which they would not relinquish. The Rebels record
dropped to 12-10 for the year with two games on tap this
week at Big Sandy on Monday (February 4) and at home
against Lexington on Tuesday (February 5) in the final
regular season game of the year. Both teams will play in
the regional tournament following the district
tournament at Milan during the week of February 11-16.
Time and specific dates have not yet been set.
The month of February celebrates Black History month.
The Minority Council is planning several activities for
the month and has begun with a front lobby display
honoring the achievements of many African-Americans.
John Nolen, a former employee of our school, graciously
contributed the display set-up. The Minority Council is
also planning an assembly program on Friday, February
22, with the time to be announced. Black History Month
reminds us that the strength of our county is our
diversity and that our strength comes from the wide
variety of cultures and people that populate our
country. September 11 brought us unity, but has a
greater significance because of the variations that
contribute to the whole. The month of February serves as
a reminder of many unique American citizens.
This Tuesday (February 5) our juniors will complete the
Writing Assessment. Using a prompt, the students will
write a 5-paragraph composition which is persuasive in
nature. They have 25 minutes to complete the prompt and
have a finished product. As I have mentioned before, the
state uses a rubic on a scale of 1-6, with 6 being the
highest. Our average for the past several years has been
3.7. We have worked diligently writing from prompts
every 2-3 weeks. We hope that this work translates to an
improved schoolwide score.
This week is National Vocational Education Week. The
week celebrates those classes designed to promote a
marketable skill for immediate post-secondary employment
or post-secondary technical training. We have
approximately 14 classes at the high school that are
vocational in nature. We also send students to our
adjacent school in Huntingdon, the Carroll County
Vocational-Technical School, whose students can take
many other vocational classes. In addition, the
Tennessee Technology Center in McKenzie and Paris have
accepted our students with some identified skills to
build. It has long been the practice to encourage
students to pursue a technical pathway if they so
desire. The choice of college or technical training
rests with the individual student and does not rest on
academic ability alone. Many of our brighter students
also chose the technical pathway. National Vocational
Education Week recognizes the contributions of this
particular branch of learning. |
