  Notes from the High School

By McKenzie High School Principal, Terry Howell

Post 4939 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars has recently donated several flags to McKenzie High School. Several months ago they gave us small staffed flags which we have placed outside in several high volume areas. Last week the post presented the school four 3' x 5' flags, which we will use to decorate the interior of the building in the hallways. Following the September 11 attack, we have tried to instill a greater appreciation of our country through our morning announcements and symbolic representations like the flag. The school appreciates the generosity of Post 4939 through these gifts. Richard Chappell, our American history teacher and Tennessee Tomorrow sponsor, arranged this opportunity working directly with post member Tom Nolen. The post also donated money to our basketball fund to assist needy students who purchased shoes this year. Coach Smith and Coach Ridley helped to identify these students and the money went directly toward a purchase for those students. Again, we appreciate the community support of the V.F.W. and its members in benefiting students.

The football banquet for the record-setting 2001 team will be this Friday at 6:30 P.M. Team members, cheerleaders, parents, and special guests will enjoy a steak meal with all the trimmings at 6:30 P.M. At 7:30 P.M., we will recognize the team, cheerleaders, coaches, and sponsors. The banquet is hosted by the 2001 Rebel Touchdown Club with Billy Hollowell as its president. Also, McKenzie High School alumna Jo Nell Weatherford has donated the steaks for the football team and coaches. We appreciate all those special people who make a football program successful.

On Monday, January 7, we issued report cards for the second semester. Every student should have brought a report card home apprising parents of the final grades for first semester classes. Of our 362 students, we had 96 students make one A; 36 students made two A's; 25 students made three A's; and 32 students made four A's. Of the approximately 1448 grades awarded at the school, 189 of them were A's which figures to 13% of the total number of grades. We have three distinct student recognitions for academic achievement. The High Honor Roll consists of students who have all A's for the second quarter of the semester. We had 34 students earn all A's for the 2nd nine weeks -- 9% of our student body. To earn inclusion in the Honor Roll, a student had to have an A average and no grade below an 89. We had 41 students in this category -- 11% of our students. Our Merit Roll includes all students having no grade below 85 and a B average. Students achieving this recognition numbered 77 or 21% of our students. Approximately 41% of our students attained inclusion in one of our three academic recognitions this second nine-week grading period. On the other hand, 24 students failed at least one class -- 7% of our students; 16 students failed two classes -- 4%; 4 students failed three classes -- 1%; and 3 students failed all four classes -- 1%. We do celebrate the success of our academic achievers. We also commit ourselves to addressing those students who failed to aim at better results the second semester.

Bruce Anderson, Justin Cook, Valarie Flippin, Amanda Mansfield, and Bertha Robles have been chosen to represent McKenzie High School for the Youth Leadership Carroll County Class of 2002. Youth Leadership Carroll County is now in its third year as a distinct activity from the adult class. Students from across the county meet for four sessions at the Chamber of Commerce office in Huntingdon to learn about and discuss issues of importance for our county including education, business and industry, government, tax concerns, etc. Students also do mini-projects and have activities designed to develop leadership skills. Students commit $60.00 of their money to participate in this leadership-building program.

The basketball team played two games last week at home against Milan and Camden, both district contests. The girls team defeated Milan to even their district record to 1-1, but fell to Camden in the last minute to fall once again below the .500 mark. The boys' squad lost to Milan in a hard fought, aggressive game, but rebounded against Camden for a double-digit victory. Their record improves to 2-1 in the district and 9-5 overall. This week the teams travel to Lexington on Tuesday for a District II-AA game. They return home on Thursday and Saturday to play Stewart County and West Carroll respectively. Both teams are hoping to make a consistent second half run to place them in a good slot for the district tournament. I encourage everyone to come out and support the Lady Rebels and Rebels as they represent our school and community.

Last Thursday night the McKenzie City Council and Mayor Patty Edwards honored our 2001 football team with an official proclamation and a plaque. The plaque included the names of all the players on the team and a brief list of their accomplishments. The proclamation included a more detailed list of the team's victories and accomplishments. City Clerk Dana Deem read the proclamation, and Mayor Patty Edwards presented the plaque to the football coaches and team members present. This recognition continues the support that the city has shown for our football team and athletic programs. We appreciate their efforts to make our campus safe and secure and to support us in countless less publicized ways. Also, in City Council action, the mayor recognized McKenzie High School senior football player Bruce Anderson, as its Youth Christian Athlete of the Year. Bruce actively involves himself in his home church. He has attended mission trips in New York City and Mexico. He helps with the Meals-on-Wheels Program and participates in the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and Students. Bruce represents his church and school well and displays his faith without having to proselytize it. We congratulate Bruce on this award from the City of McKenzie.

Several of our band students will audition this Saturday for the All West Tennessee Concert Band. Those students auditioning are the following: Ben Martin, Matthew Holt, Amanda Mansfield, Jason Latham, Chase Barton, Renee Wilson, Rebekah Cooper, Christy Lowe, Kayla Bomar, Kate Hames, Amanda Allen, and Brittany Washburn. These students will travel to Union City on January 19 for the audition. If selected, they will perform in the All-West Tennessee Concert Band on February 14-16. Good luck to them as they compete and represent our school.

School will not be in session on Monday, January 21, in observance of Martin Luther King Day.
