In other news, Charter Communications, a Partner in Education with 3rd grade, donated $600 to Mrs. Marcia Webb's 3rd grade class. The money was used to buy three televisions and three playstations to use LightSpan learning activities. Third grade has been studying spiders. Our story for next week is Ananse's Feast and is about a spider. They have used the Internet to look up information about spiders and read different books about spiders and even made their own books about spiders. They plan to make spider cookies to finish off the unit this week.

Until next time . . .

  Middle School News

We began our spring semester on January 3. On Friday, January 4, our students were treated with first semester report cards. Parents please check your child's grades and encourage them in appropriate ways.

The State of Tennessee Department of Health has added the immunization requirement of immunity to Hepatitis B for entry into the 7th grade beginning with the 2002-2003 school year. Children who have begun the series but have not completed the schedule may start and finish the series during the school year. This is consistent with the standards of any vaccine that requires more than one dose. Our local health department will gladly assist you with the Hepatitis B vaccine or you may obtain the immunization from your family doctor.

You will need to furnish proof at the beginning of the next school year that your child's series of Hepatitis B vaccinations has begun before he/she can be enrolled in 7th grade. If you have any questions, please contact us at 352-2792. or the nurse at 352-5272.

Our PTO is currently conducting fund-raisers for an awning to cover the walk in front of our building. This shelter will protect our students as they enter and exit to load buses and automobiles. The PTO has sent letters home with students as well as to many local businesses and individuals. Anyone wishing to donate should make checks payable to M.M.S. P.T.O. Building Fund. Send this to McKenzie Middle School, ATTN: MMS P.T.O., 80 Woodrow Avenue, McKenzie, Tennessee, 38201.

On the date this article is being written both of our basketball teams remain undefeated. Hollow Rock-Bruceton will be hosting the Middle School County Tournament on January 7, 10, and 12. Come to Bruceton and support our teams as they defend their county championships.

  Notes from the High School

By McKenzie High School Principal, Terry Howell

Bruce Anderson recently won the Voice of Democracy Script-writing contest at the district level. Bruce's script addressed the theme of Reaching out to America's Future. Bruce won the local competition and competed at the district level against those schools in our congressional district that participated, usually 12-15 different high schools. He will present his script at the district meeting of the Veterans of Foreign Wars on January 22. The local contest is sponsored by Post 4939 here in McKenzie and has become a yearly project for the past thirty years. The ten local finalists were chosen from Zia McKennie's advanced English IV class.

During the Christmas break, several football players received recognition from the Jackson Sun All-West Tennessee team. Named to the first team were David Duncan, defensive back; Jeremy Sydnor, offensive lineman; Josh Stenberg, linebacker; and Mitchell Hall, receiver. Those receiving honorable mention were Taylor Holland, Ricky Mathis, Shiron Perkins, Brannon Milton, Jonathan Adkisson, Justin Adkisson, and Eric Gilbert. These recognitions follow an outstanding regular season in which the team recorded a school best 13 victories and advanced to the fourth round (semifinals) of the state playoffs.

As part of Ms. Corbin's Art II class, students decorated several areas of the school with lettering and graphics. Students had to prepare and present to me sketches of their work like a graphic artist would have to do to an employer. The sketches had to be received and approved. Students then worked in the areas to which they were assigned to do the final work on the walls and doorways of the building. Those students who created and implemented these designs were the following: Mark Anderson, Chris Hinton, David King, Matt Lewis, Crystal Neihoff, Sarah Ozment, Ramon Padilla, Jacqueline Pewitt, Patrick Reid, Cassie Scott, Chris Shrumm, Patrick Smith, Jill Stambaugh, and Joseph Winchester. Parents are invited to see the enduring legacy of these students.

Ms. Herrin and our school will host a Financial Aid Workshop on Monday, January 14, at 7:00 P.M. in the high school library. This workshop will be conducted by Laura Bateman with Bethel College. Ms. Bateman will review the federal aid application process and will provide specific information about F.A.F.S.A. (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). Ms. Bateman has conducted this workshop for several years and has helped parents and students understand the difficult process of federal financial aid assistance. The workshop does not focus on Bethel College, but is a general guideline to follow to receive federal aid. Ms. Bateman will discuss deadlines to meet and financial papers/income tax information that is necessary for completion before aid can be awarded.

During the Christmas break, work was begun to build a greenhouse on campus. This project is being done by Project E.C.H.O. (Educational Co-operatives for Habitat Opportunities). The Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency (TWRA) has initiated the implementation of Project E.C.H.O. on Kentucky Reservoir as a pilot program to develop and establish management strategies and methodologies for habitat restoration. Classes on campus will use the greenhouse as a type of laboratory to learn real-life ecological standards and lessons. Preliminary plans are for classes to use the greenhouse to grow various flora for placement in the Kentucky Lake area. Also, classes will participate in shore-line seeding activities overseen by TWRA. Ms. Paula Doster has worked closely with TWRA officials to make the greenhouse and Project ECHO a reality. Ms. Doster also sponsors the Wildlife Club which will work with TWRA officials in conjunction with Project ECHO.

Project Graduation has scheduled the Great Pretenders to perform at the Dickey Fine Arts Center on February 8-9 at 7:00 P.M. Members of the senior class and their parents plan to perform on these nights and impersonate some of the stars both past and present in the musical field. Practice sessions for the Great Pretenders will be on Mondays during the month of January at 7:00 P.M. Seniors and parents are invited to participate in this memorable event. The profit for the high school will go to Project Graduation, the alcohol and drug-free party after graduation.

The school issued report cards to students for the fall semester on Monday, January 7. Parents need to be aware of this and see the results of the fall semester. Students had an opportunity to earn four credits during the fall semester and may now earn four more credits with the new classes in the spring semester. Several students owe library fines, cafeteria charges, or class fees. Report cards will be held until these obligations are cleared.

The basketball teams ended the first half of the season by playing Clarksburg on December 20. After sweeping the Lady Rockets and Rockets, the Lady Rebels improved their season records to 4-5 and 7-2 respectively. In tournament action during the Christmas break the Rebels lost to cross-county foe Bruceton by a nine point margin and defeated Clinch High School outside of Knoxville for a 20+ margin of victory. Their record changed to 8-3 after the Huntingdon Christmas Classic. On Friday, January 4, both teams battled Dresden High School in non-district action. The Lady Lions, ranked 4th in the state in Class A, fell to the hard-nosed defense played by the Lady Rebels. The Lady Rebels won the contest 40-39 with Kristin Wiggins hitting the two game-winning foul shots with 7 seconds remaining. The girls evened their record at 5-5 with this opening game of the second half of the season. The Rebels were not as fortunate as they lost to the Lions 56-47. They had earlier defeated Dresden by a double digit margin, but did not play as well this time. They own an 8-4 record as the first full week of the second half begins. This week the Rebels and Lady Rebels play host to Milan on Tuesday (January 8) and Camden on Friday (January 11). On Tuesday of the following week, the teams travel to Lexington to play their third consecutive district game.

As this new year begins, I ask for the support of parents and the community in educating these young people for the future. Education is a cooperative effort and the school covets your input. Please direct academic, attendance, behavioral, or other concerns to me so that together we can insure the success of each child in our school.
