The fourth grade class of McKenzie Elementary enjoyed a cookout at the City Park on Thursday, April 25. This celebration was to acknowledge the efforts students made on the recent TCAP tests. Parents, teachers and students enjoyed a beautiful day together. We are grateful to all the parents for helping grill and serve hamburgers and hot dogs.

Also on Thursday, kindergarten and second grade students participated in Career day. Many parents and community leaders came and spoke to students about their careers. We appreciate all their efforts in making this a successful event.

On Tuesday, April 23, students who accumulated 60 Accelerated Reader points or more attended the showing of the movie, The Rookie, in Martin. The group enjoyed box lunches at the Martin Recreational Complex afterwards. Marcia Webb and Suzanne Howell accompanied the students. Congratulations to these readers for their wonderful accomplishments.

On Wednesday, April 24, future kindergarten students from Precious Minds and Head Start toured McKenzie Elementary. Kindergarten teachers gave them a sampling of lessons and activities as they came to their classrooms. The students also toured one of the computer labs, the library, and the cafeteria. Hopefully, this will make the transition in August a little easier for these youngsters.

Even though there are not many days of school left, there are still many events to come. On April 30, students will travel to Obion County to participate in Special Olympics. Also on April 30, third and fourth graders who achieve a 95 or above average all year long will be recognized at the Honors Reception. On May 2, second graders will go to the City Park to cook out. The time will be from 10:30 a.m.-1:00 p.m.

On May 3, a big day is planned. This is the Special Events Day. Activities begin at 9:30 a.m. with guest speaker Jill Holland. Students will participate in patriotic activities and drug free lessons. At 1:00 p.m., the main attraction arrives. The Screaming Eagles will land.

The speaker for the week was Ismeal Hernandez from Mrs. Tammy Gordon's room. Ishmeal did a great job!

Until next week......

This Saturday May 4 the Junior Class will host the annual Junior-Senior Prom. Many students are busily getting decorations, materials, back-drops, etc. together to create an appropriate atmosphere for the prom. This year's theme will be "Love and Paradise". Junior class sponsors and officers have ordered and received the decorations for the prom and have created a work schedule for students for this week. Prom is scheduled to begin at 7:00 P.M. with the promenade in the Theater. Parents are invited to attend this part of the program. At 8:15 P.M. the senior slide show will be presented in the Theater with the dance following immediately after the slide show. Students received their invitations to R.S.V.P. a few weeks ago. The photographer will begin taking photos at 8:30 P.M. The dance is scheduled from 8:00 P.M. - 12:00 A.M. All dates that are not McKenzie High School students must sign in the office before Friday. Ms. Yates, one of our junior class sponsors, has organized the local Prom Promise Campaign. We will make Prom Promise announcements all week and have a sign-up on Friday. We certainly encourage you to discuss with your child the danger of alcohol and drug abuse and the importance of having a safe and memorable prom experience.

The tennis teams had a busy week planned last week with three matches. On Monday the Lady Rebels competed against the Lady Bulldogs of Milan. The girls' team lost by a four to three match deficit. Robyn Winkler and Jadrea Allen accounted for all three team points winning their singles matches and double match. Robyn won 8-1, Jadrea 8-6, and double score 9-7. On Tuesday of last week, the girls tied Gibson County 2-2. Robyn and Jadrea again won their singles' matches by a score of 8-0 and 8-1 respectively. They completed the week with a district match against Lexington on Thursday. Against the Lady Tigers, our girls came out strong, winning 6-1. Winning their singles matches were Michelle Chandel (8-3), Robyn Winkler (8-0), Jadrea Allen (8-1), and Michelle Moody (8-3). Adding two more wins were the doubles teams of Allen and Winkler (8-3) and Moody and Jessica Johnson (8-1). Their record now stands at 5-1 as we approach the final week of the regular season and tournaments begin. The boys' squad also struggled against Milan in the short end of a 4-3 match. Boys who won include Andrew Bateman (8-6), David Duncan (8-5), and the doubles team of Bateman-Matt Lewis (8-2). Against Gibson County, all of the team enjoyed success whitewashing their opponent 6-0. Andrew Bateman (8-3), Jesse King (8-6), Matt Lewis (8-5), and Daniel Duncan (8-0) scored singles wins. In doubles Bateman-Lewis (9-8) and David King - Duncan (8-2) earned victories. In the district match at Lexington, the boys' team finished with a score of 4-3. Andrew Bateman (8-5), Matt Lewis (8-5), Daniel Duncan (8-5), and the doubles team of Lewis-Jesse King (9-7) gained victories for the Rebels. Their record now stands at 5-4. This week the tennis teams close out their regular season with a match at Henry County. They begin district tournament play on Friday, May 3.

The baseball team played three games last week winning one and losing two. Last Monday they faced county rival Bruceton in an away game. The Rebels defeated the Tigers to sweep the two games played this year by a score of 12-7. Brian Winston, Mark Ghyers, and Rory Lacey each collected two hits while Mitchell Hall belted a homerun. Senior Matt Hutchison picked up the win for the Rebels. On Wednesday, the Rebels traveled to Huntingdon for their second game of the season against the Mustangs. Huntingdon gained a split for the season with a 6-5 last inning victory over the Rebels. Taylor Holland, Mitchell Hall, and Rory Lacey all managed two hits in the contest. The Rebels also scored three homeruns from Hall, Lacey, and Brian Toombs. The Rebels ended the week with a trip to Martin Westview against the powerful Chargers. Playing well, the Rebels still figured on the short end of a 12-8 contest. The Charges improved to 18-4 and dropped the Rebels record to 8-11. Leading hitters for McKenzie include Taylor Holland, Jake Smith, Chris Wall, and Mitchell Hall -- all with two hits. Mitchell Hall continued his homerun barrage with another four-bagger against Westview. This week the Rebels play Lexington, the number one team in the state, on Monday. District tournament action will begin the latter part of the week.

The softball team also played several games this week. On Monday the team swept the Fillies of Huntingdon with a 10-5 win. Summer Poff notched the win. Brittany Carpenter, Becky Toombs, and Amanda Rogers all collected three hits to pace the 19 hits for the Lady Rebels for the game. The team returned to district action on Tuesday against the Lady Bulldogs of Milan. They broke open a tight game with a 6-run sixth inning rally to secure an 8-1 victory. Brittany Carpenter pitched a two hitter and improved her record to 13-1. She helped her cause with three hits, including a triple. Angie Birdwell also had three hits in the victory. On Thursday, the girls ran into a stubborn Lady Tigers team from Lexington. Our girls could only manage three hits and one run in a 3-1 loss. Their record fell to 22-6 overall and 6-2 in the district as tournament action begins this week. They end their regular season at Henry County on Friday.

Last Wednesday and Thursday Jackie Carr and her international business classes visited Profile Metals. Students observed some of the operation of the plant which works closely with domestic, German, and Japanese automobile makers. They noted the production of mechanical, computerized presses which makes muffler covers, exhaust covers, and wheel fittings to name just a few of their many operations. Students also learned the importance of learning math and computer skills to do these jobs. Ms. Carr's focus in this field trip was to show the applicability of academic skills at our school to the work force, to show the importance of mastering math skills at the secondary level, and to show the international interdependence of the world economy. We are indebted to Profile Metals for allowing us to glimpse these concepts.

On Monday and Tuesday of this week, Ms. Carr plans to have Hamilton-Ryker to come into her class to help teach several pivotal skills for entry into the job market. They will discuss and complete job applications, resumés, interview skills, and personal/social skills necessary to become marketable. Students will then go through mock interviews with Hamilton-Ryker representatives. This staged format is an excellent introduction for students to learn how to conduct themselves in what will soon be a real life experience for many. We appreciate Hamilton-Ryker for taking time out of their schedule to assist us in this activity.

The band will have its annual banquet on Monday, May 6. Mr. Breeden and his students will recount the highlights of the year in the competitive marching season and the parade season. The banquet is scheduled for 6:30 P.M. and will be served by the McKenzie High School cafeteria staff.
