McKenzie Elementary School educators traveled to
Nashville Wednesday, May 1st to rally on the Capitol
steps for education funding. Between 2000-4000 teachers,
parents, students, administrators, and board members
from across the state gathered. Speakers voiced concerns
regarding the lack of definite action taken by
legislators to form a budget for next year. Travelling
to Nashville were teachers Dalea Perkins, Amy Wilkes,
Charlotte Verner, Darlene Bowlin, and principal,
Charlene Alsup.
Fourth graders and Rebel Singers will present their
annual musical production on Thursday, May 9th at 7:00
p. m. in the Bouldin Auditorium on the Bethel College
campus. ...On the rooftops of London, coo! What a sight!
Mary Poppins, Bert, and the chimneysweeps will be only a
part of the wonderful world of Disney as MES presents
"Disney Magic."
"The show celebrates the 100th anniversary of Disney,"
remarked Mrs. Pat Forgy, MES music director. You won't
want to miss the costumed Disney characters as they
sing, dance, and act the night away, creating a memory
that will last forever. Family members, talented
townspeople, students, and teachers have worked very
hard to present this show. A special thanks to Mrs.
Sandy McMahen for accompanying us this year. Come and
bring your friends. All ages will enjoy Mickey and
Minnie and the unforgettable Donald and Daisy Duck!
Rebel Singers performed for the Kiwanis Club on
Wednesday, May 1st at the Smokehouse Restaurant. They
performed musical selections from their upcoming
musical.

On Thursday, May 2nd, second grade students enjoyed a
cookout at the National Guard Armory to celebrate their
efforts on the recent TCAP examinations. The Drill Hall
echoed with happy voices of children as parents grilled
hot dogs and hamburgers. Special thanks to First
Sergeant Johnny Walker and Sergeant Spiro Roditas for
arranging the use of the armory due to inclement
weather.
The annual Special Events day celebration was held on
Friday, May 3rd. This is always an exciting day when
students are encouraged by community leaders to lead a
character-filled, drug-free life. The speaker was Mrs.
Jill Holland, MSSD board member. Students enjoyed
touring local rescue vehicles as well as the Screamin'
Eagles helicopter from the 101st Airborne Division our
of Fort Campbell, Kentucky.
This week is Teacher Appreciation Week. Please let your
favorite teacher know how much he or she means to you.
Hats off to all of the teachers who have made a
difference in the lives of so many people.
Last week's announcer was Kevashia Robinson from Mrs.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all
students, parents and guardians who attended this year's
fifth grade TCAP tutoring sessions. Several of the
students had great improvements.
There were four guardians and students who did not miss
a single session. These students and guardians should be
commended. There were many other students who attended
everyday without their parents.Thank you so much for
making a statement to your child that Education is
important. Every time teachers, parents/guardians and
students work together, the impact is positive and
success is great. We really appreciate Mrs. Roxie
Walker.
On April 30, the seventh-eighth grade members of the
Beta Club went on a field trip to West Tennessee School
for the Deaf. The students listened to the teachers and
audiologists explain how their school differed from our
school. They taught the students the alphabet in sign
language. The students role-played how a deaf person
feels in the real world.
They also toured the school and visited many
classrooms. The highlight of the trip was playing with
the children on the playground.
Also on April 30, a group of students represented MMS
in Special Olympics competition at the University of
Tennessee at Martin. Chelsey Banks, Jamison Johnson,
Christopher Johnson, Janet Quinn, Holly Richardson,
Sherry Bell, Isaiah Harris and Alex Bell brought home
one fourth place, three third place, two second place
and five first place ribbons. We are very proud of them.
Our soccer team concluded their season on April 29
with a 5-0 victory over Huntingdon. Their final record
is six wins and three losses. Coach Jason Driggers has
done a fantastic job with our inaugural season.
Thursday, May 9 will be Career Day at McKenzie Middle
School. Our students will have the opportunity to attend
four sessions to hear representatives from nineteen
different professions. We appreciate these community
members that volunteer their time.
We are very proud of our middle school band. They
brought home first place from the Fish Fry parade on
April 26. Congratulations to the Marching Rebels. |

This week will be a busy one for the testing of our
students. On Tuesday and Wednesday students will take
the state-mandated Gateway tests in Algebra I and
Biology I. They will also take end of course exams in
Foundations I and II. These tests will represent 15% of
the student's grade for the second nine weeks of the
semester. With the Class of 2005, a successful score on
the Gateway tests is necessary to receive a regular
diploma. Last week our English I and English II students
field tested the English I end of course exam and the
English II Gateway exam. The English II is the third
Gateway test that requires a successful score to earn a
regular diploma for the Class of 2005 and beyond.
Seniors will begin final exams on Wednesday of this
week. They will have their First and Fourth Block test
on Wednesday and their Second and Third Block tests on
Thursday. All seniors received a copy of their test
schedule, Baccalaureate information, and graduation
guidelines last Friday. Baccalaureate, which is
sponsored by the McKenzie Ministerial Association, will
be on Sunday, May 12 at 8:00 P.M. at Bethel College.
Graduation will be on Friday, May 17, at 8:00 P.M. at
the high school gymnasium.
The girls softball team had a light schedule last week
with a single regular season game against Henry County
and a first-round district tournament game against
Lexington. Against Henry County, the girls ended up on
the short end of a 5-3 game. They did rebound with a
victory against the Lexington Lady Tigers in the first
round of the tournament. For the Lady Rebels, Brittany
Carpenter continued a stellar freshman year squeaking by
Lexington 4-3. Brittany improved her personal record to
15-1 and the Lady Rebels raised their team record to
25-7. This week the team competes in the tournament
against the winner of the Milan/Camden game. The Lady
Rebels play on Tuesday at 6:00 P.M. at Camden. The
double elimination tournament is scheduled to conclude
on Thursday, May 9. The top two teams will advance to
the regional tournament next week.
The high school band represented our school well at the
Fish Fry Parade. They earned first place in the Class B
division as a band. Drum major Amanda Mansfield won
second place overall while our guard was recognized as
third place overall. The band itself also won the
Overall Sweepstakes Trophy. Congratulations to them as
they represented our school well. This week the band
will again be in competition at the West Tennessee
Strawberry Festival Parade at Humboldt. Good luck to
them as they continue the marching season.
Last week several members of our Life Skills Class
attended the Special Olympics at the University of
Tennessee at Martin competing in many categories. In the
Softball Throw, Jassica Gilbert, Robyn Lewis and Shanaka
Milton, and Marcus Milton won 1st place ribbons. In the
Long Jump, Gary Harris won 4th place; in the 50-Meter
Dash, Robyn Lewis placed 2nd and Sheena Tegethoff placed
4th. March Milton won a second Blue Ribbon placing 1st
in the 100 Meter Walk competition. Congratulations to
these students.
The next two weeks are critical to students in
completing this term and in preparing for semester
exams. Undergraduate exams are scheduled for May 21 and
May 22. These tests consist of 20% of the second
semester grades. Students have the opportunity to earn
four credits this semester. They must earn a passing
grade and complete required attendance obligations. Time
For Time will meet Monday through Thursday from 3:15 -
4:45 and on Friday of this week from 7:00 A.M. to 10:00
A.M. Parents of students who still owe Time For Time
should have received a letter explaining the program and
the number of sessions owed in the mail this week.
The baseball team had a single game last week in regular
season action at Lexington. Playing against the
top-ranked AA school in the state, the Rebels fell to
the Tigers by a 14-4 score. The Rebels ended their
regular season at 8-12 with the district tournament
beginning at Milan on Saturday, May 4. The Rebels had
already beaten the Bulldogs twice during the regular
season and fought an uphill battle by falling behind
4-1. In the bottom of the sixth, junior Jay Taylor
slammed a first-pitch curve over the right field fence
to secure a 5-4 win for the Rebels. Taylor's grand slam
homerun sparked the Rebels to a second round game
scheduled for Monday at 7:00 P.M. at Milan. Junior Brian
Winston pitched well to pick up the win in seven strong
innings of pitching.
The football team is having its annual lift-a-thon to
raise money for the football program and challenge
players to lift to their maximum amount. Players will
ask supporters of MHS football to pledge 1¢ a pound or
to make a contribution to the program. They will seek
pledges this week and max out their weights in the
actual lift-a-thon on May 13 - 15. These students have
worked hard all winter in the weight room getting
stronger and preparing for the upcoming season. With the
loss of 17 seniors, those student-athletes realize that
to have a successful year they must outwork their
competition. They had a good spring season and made
strides to improve. They continue to do that as the
off-season extends into the summer.
The Rebel tennis team played in the District 14 Tennis
Tournament on Saturday, May 4, at USJ in Jackson.
Representing the Boys' Team were seniors Andrew Bateman
and Matt Lewis and sophomores Daniel Duncan and David
King. Andrew Bateman, entering the tournament with a 9-2
record in singles, was voted the number two player in
the district. Andrew was defeated in the second round of
the tournament by Wes Murphy of Chester County. David
King lost to Michael Jenkins, the number two player on
the Trinity team, in a close match of 5-8. The doubles
team of Matt Lewis and Daniel Duncan were victorious in
the first round of the tournament against Ezell and New
of Huntingdon with a score of 8-1. Lewis and Duncan
faced the number two team in the district, Davey and
Cooper of Adamsville, in the second round and were
unable to gain the victory against this strong team. The
season records for the boys' team was 6-5 with the girls
at 4-6-1.
McKenzie High School will not be in session on Friday,
May 10. |
