On Friday, October 4, students at the McKenzie Middle School participated in Dress Up Day. Students were encouraged to dress by grade level as follows: fifth grade: camouflage; sixth grade: bad hair day, seventh grade: mismatched and eighth grade: twins. We had an excellent turnout in student participation. The winners of cash prizes awarded by the Students Council for best dressed were as follows: fifth grade: Jesse Forsythe; sixth grade: Teneisha Carey; seventh grade: Zack Cox; eighth grade: Kristi Petering and Brittany Martin.

Students in Mrs. Basford’s sixth grade reading class who participated in the Reading Log opportunity received their awards on Friday, October 25 during class. Mrs. Basford created the reading log for students to record books or stories they read. This was in an effort to show students they didn’t have to just read required books, but could also read for enjoyment. The students were allowed to include any book or story read on their reading log. They must fill out an index card about the book, giving details about what they likes most about it and a brief illustration.

Winners received a coupon to Sonic for a free frozen treat of their choice. The winners were Jessica Neisler, Kellie Chalk, Harris Laughrey, Michael Pate and Deidra Hamlin.

Our basketball teams are halfway through their season. Our next home game is Monday, December 2 against West Carroll. Dan and Sheila Ridley coach our girls’ team. Eighth grade team members are Anna Trull, Samantha Doster, Jill Taylor, Andrea Swan, Laken Comer; seventh graders include: Chloe Cunningham, Beth Aden, Lesley Robertson, Jessica Milligan, Jill Mitchell, Sarah Owen; sixth graders are Victoria Hampton, Elizabeth Russell, Lacey Lane, Taneisha Gilbert, Zana Carter, Mignon Salameh and Sydnee Greenberg.

Josh Kee is the boys coach. Eighth grade members are Carson Rider, Britton McCann, Blake Milam, Corey Wilson, Kendall Smith, Kelsey Schweitzer, Julian Tucker, Glenn Smith and Derrick Hubble. Seventh graders are Cody Burton, Derek Carr, Shabree Payne, Jessie Townes, Angelo Edwards, Parker Jones, Josh Brown, Clint Kee and Charles Lawrence.

Here are some important dates to mark on your calendar. Progress reports will go home on November 14 with the students. This will let your know how your child is progressing during the second grading period. On November 20, we will have picture retakes. Students that were absent on our first picture day or student with flawed photographs will have pictures made. Also on this date we will take basketball, cheerleading, and club pictures.
