Our football team hosted the Fairview Yellowjackets at Rebel Stadium in 2nd round action in the State 2-A Playoffs. Playing on a field that eventually became a quagmire because of heavy rains for the past week, the Rebels fell behind early in the game after a first quarter score by the visitors and a two point conversion. From that point on, the Rebel defense stiffened not allowing a touchdown during the rest of regulation play. The Rebel offense, meanwhile, drove the ball in fits and starts, but failed to capitalize the first half. The Rebels faced an 8-0 deficit to start the second half and saw Fairview execute a perfect on-side kick on the opening kick-off of the second half. However, the Rebel defense refused to break and repelled all scoring attempts by the visitors. The Rebel offense relied upon the running of sophomore Cody Cook to tie the score in the fourth quarter at 8-8. The backs followed the blocking of its offensive line and the passing of freshman Drew Hayes to spread the visitor's defense enough to put together the tying score. For the second straight week, the Rebels played into overtime. Fairview had the first opportunity at the ten-yard line. After three plays with only five yards to show for its effort, the visitors called time-out. The Fairview coaches called and the players executed a perfect halfback pass to take the lead. Their two-point conversion attempt failed behind a barrage of Rebel defenders. The Rebels in their possession began with a rough start. A quarterback sack and later a penalty backed the Rebels to the 22-yard line on third down. The third down call was beautifully played with Hayes finding senior Matt Jones in the end zone for the tying score. Freshman John Kermit Laughrey, a freshman in years but much older having faced this situation many times during the season, sized up the snap and the placement and drilled the game-winning extra point. Final score -- McKenzie Rebels 15, Fairview Yellowjackets 14.

This week the Rebels go to a third round game for the third straight year. We will host the Lewis County Panthers at 7:00 P.M. at Rebel Stadium. Advanced tickets may be purchased for $7.00 at McKenzie High School's front office. Come out and cheer this team as it faces stiff competition from Lewis County.

To all parents, progress reports were issued to students in all academic classes last Friday. This report charts student progress through the first 131/2 weeks of this semester. Semester exams will be given on December 19 and 20 to provide the final overall grade of the semester. Parents are encouraged to call the school to arrange conferences with teachers if their student's grade is marginal. All parents of students who are failing or who had a D at mid-term have been notified as to progress. The next 3-4 weeks are critical for students to earn credits in the classes they are taking.

On Tuesday, November 19, many of our seniors will go to Murray State University to tour the campus. Murray State has agreed to pay the cost of buses and lunches to provide this educational tour. While at Murray, students will also see a Shakespearean play. The experience will combine academics with perspectives on how to choose the college/university that a student is best suited to attend.

The girls' and boys' basketball teams will participate in the Huntingdon Basketball Jamboree on Saturday, November 23, at Huntingdon High School. Both teams will play the West Carroll War Eagles with the girls' game scheduled to begin at 6:30 P.M. and the boys' game at 7:15 P.M. Both teams will play two eight-minute quarters with organizers staying close to the schedule mentioned previously. Advanced tickets are on sale at the high school for $3.00 with all advanced ticket sales going to McKenzie High School. Tickets at the gate will cost $5.00. The first varsity game for the year is slotted for Tuesday, November 26, at home against Clarksburg. Tip-off time for the game is 6:30 P.M.

Senior Ricky Mathis has received a nomination for Mr. Football in Division I, Class 2A Lineman. Ricky joins Demonte Bolden of Chattanooga Tyner and Bobby Clift of Lewis County as the three linemen in this classification so honored. This award and ceremony is sponsored by American General which funds the banquet and presentations to the top 14 backs and linemen in seven classifications of the TSSAA. The banquet and awards presentation will be presented to these student-athletes on Monday, December 2, at the Opryland Hotel. A committee of statewide sports writers selected winners based on their performance during the 2002 regular season. Other considerations included academics and character. High school head coaches and members of the media nominated the finalists. Ricky has had a tremendous season with over 80 tackles on defense and over 50 pancake blocks and consistently grading over 90 on offense. His leadership has been instrumental in the success that our inexperienced team has had. Good luck to him in December as he attends the banquet.

On the Tuesday before Thanksgiving break, the military will conduct the ASVAB to members of our junior class. The ASVAB is an aptitude test that accesses the aptitude and ability of students. Part of the test results will suggest to students areas that they may want to pursue after high school. The test also measures how well students will perform in future academic coursework. The test is a tool that the guidance counselor can use to make recommendations to students about future plans.
