  Notes From the High School

By MHS Principal Terry Howell

Jeff Bunn through the marketing program and Zack Hammond with the Art II class recently competed in the Jackson Sun Design-an-Ad competition sponsored by the Jackson Sun. Their winning ads appeared in Tuesday's Jackson Sun. Both students were honored at a reception in Jackson on Monday night for submitting winning ads. This type of activity promotes the creativity and artistry of students. The students were assisted by marketing teacher Scott Jewell and art teacher Glynda Corbin.

Approximately 70 seniors attended the West Tennessee Regional College Fair at U.T. Martin on Tuesday, October 29. Students attended an orientation and information session given by U.T. Martin representatives and U.T.M. students Catherine Clark, Beth French, and Kaci Mebane, all alumni of McKenzie High School. They discussed differences between high school and college life, the expectations of college level educators, and the sacrifices needed to do well in post-secondary education. Students also met with a wide variety of representatives from colleges and universities, technical and vocational schools, and the military. Ms. Herrin and Ms. Elam accompanied these students to Martin for the college fair.

The annual Veterans Day Program will be on Monday, November 11, at 10:00 A.M. at the high school. All veterans are asked to assemble in the back lobby of the building to sign in and receive name tags. We welcome all guests to attend to help us pay tribute to those patriots who have defended American freedom during wars and conflicts. The program will feature music by the high school Honors Chorus and band, an oration by the Voice of Democracy Script-Writing Contest winner, the keynote speaker Captain John Cory Kinton, the Veterans Recognition, the National Guard's presentation of the colors, and the Veterans Memorial Service conducted by City Clerk Dana Deem. Veterans and their spouses are invited to be special guests at lunch following the program. This meaningful and timely program has significance for our faculty and students. We welcome the community to be a part by attending on November 11.

Seniors are rapidly approaching another deadline. That date is November 8 which is the deadline for applications for the December ACT assessment. As I have mentioned several times, college and universities use the ACT or SAT as the benchmark for scholarship awards. Generally speaking, they consider the ACT or SAT score first, community service and school involvement second, extracurricular activities third, and high school grade point average fourth. They do check to see if there is a parallel between G.P.A. and ACT scores to insure that academic ability and the self-discipline to do well match.

The Balfour representative will be here at 7:15 A.M. on Wednesday, November 5, for students to order graduation supplies. He did meet with seniors last Wednesday, provided them packets to inspect, and gave them an order blank to purchase the materials/supplies they need for graduation. Students will also order caps and gowns and diplomas and diploma covers. When the representative is here, he will require a $60.00 deposit or the entire order total if it is less than $60.00. Parents are encouraged to assist students in making decisions about how much to order. Invariably, we have students who order too much or too little. Good planning and reflection help to prevent this problem.

Basketball practice for the 2002-03 has begun. Our girls have several upcoming scrimmages this week. On Wednesday, they travel to Jackson Christian School to scrimmage and on Saturday they host a scrimmage camp and will play Perry County and Calloway County. Because of football, the boys' squad will practice with fewer scrimmage dates. The season will open on November 26. The girls are coached by Dan Ridley with assistance from Bruce Herrin. The boys are directed by Larry Joe Smith with help from Matt McCaleb.

Time for Time will meet on Mondays through Thursday from 3:15 to 4:45 P.M. in the library. Students who have missed more than six (6) times in a class are expected to make up each session beyond the six (6) days. I have sent notification letters to parents apprising them of these excessive absences. To date we have 16 students who qualify for Time for Time. In most cases, poor attendance translates to poor grades. Time for Time is a good place for students to receive some academic assistance. Again, I ask parents to assist us in making students accountable for their actions.

The Wildlife Club hosted a skeet shoot for high school age students on Saturday, October 26. Sophomore Lee Russell proved to be the most accurate shooter. In two rounds he only missed one skeet and shattered 49 skeets. The Wildlife Club is designed for students who enjoy outdoor activities. Beginning last year, the club has 50 members with Paula Doster serving as its sponsor. The club has worked closely with the T.W.R.A. and local agent Lance Rider.

On Friday night, our Rebels fought valiantly against cross-county rival Huntingdon falling by a 21-7 score. The Rebels played evenly the first half and went into the lockers with a 7-7 deadlock. The Mustangs immediately established field position the second half by pinning the Rebels deep into Huntingdon territory on the opening kick-off. The Rebels repeatedly fought to prevent the Mustangs from scoring, but a 60-yard pass play and a rushing touchdown prevented the Rebels from pulling the upset. The loss completed the regular season for both teams. The Mustangs return to the 6-AA championship position. The Rebels and Parson Riverside tie for the runner-up shot with identical 3-2 region records. Because Riverside defeated us in head-to-head competition, they will receive the second seed in the playoffs. The Rebels will travel to Waverly on Friday for the first round match-up. Game time is at 7:00 P.M. Please note this early start. All play-off games begin at 7:00 P.M.

Amber King ended her successful cross country season by running in the state meet at Percy Warner Park in Nashville last Saturday. Amber ran the 3.1 mile route in 22:56. Running in the A-AA division, Amber finished 85th out of 171 runners. Congratulations to Amber in representing our school so well.
