Notes From the High School |
|
| |
| |
|
By MHS Principal Terry Howell |

Last Monday the Cross Country team competed in the meet
at Obion County High School. Four girls and three boys
ran in the race with these results. Amber King led our
team and finished 22nd. Julie Smith completed the race
in 31st; Lucy Sneed, 40th; and Ashley Murrey, 44th.
Caleb Owen had the best time of the boy's team with a
35th place finish. Ty Winkler and Jason Bloodworth had
times of 56th and 58th place respectively. Approximately
100 runners competed in this grueling, 3-mile course.
According to our students, their track was by far the
most difficult one that they have faced to date. Even
under optimal weather conditions, our students had times
that were above what they had run in the prior few
races. The only consolation was that other students'
times had increased also. On Tuesday, October 15, our
team is slated to run in the Best of the West
Competition at the UT Ag Center in Jackson. The region
meet is scheduled for Thursday, October 24 at the same
site.
The Key Club recently met to elect its slate of
officers. Serving in leadership positions this year are
these students: Andrew Cross, president; Ashley Wilson,
vice president; Crystal Mann, secretary/treasure;
Mallory Brandon, reporter; and Heather Flippin, Student
Council Representative. The 50-member club which is the
high school branch of the Kiwanis Club participates in
many service projects with its mother club. Among the
projects that they did last year are Trick or Treat for
UNICEF, collection of drink tab tops for St. Jude's
Children's Hospital, sales of Valentine hearts for
Cystic Fibrosis, the sponsorship of two Angel Tree
children, collection of quarters for the March of Dimes,
participation in Bethel College Homecoming Parade,
participation in McKenzie Octoberfest, creating summer
fun kits for the children of the Head Start program, and
saving a nickel a day for Iodine Deficiency. This year
they plan to help with the elementary school fall
festival and help the Children's Miracle Network. It is
good to see our students involved in community service
and developing a civic consciousness to become
productive members of society. Key Club sponsors are
Jennifer Champion and Dan Ridley.
A reminder to all parents that this week is mid-term
exam week. On Wednesday, October 16, students will take
First and Third Block tests. On Thursday, October 17,
they will take Second and Fourth Block exams. These
nine-week tests count 25% of the mid-term grade. Report
cards for the nine-week period will be issued on October
22. I encourage parents to review materials with
students and stress the importance of the exams. The
tests are comprehensive and cover all the material that
a student has had in a class to this point. Sometimes
freshmen do not realize the importance of this test.
They also do not realize that they must earn 28 credits
to graduate and successfully complete the three Gateway
exams in English II, Algebra I, and Biology I.
The band plans to have a mini-camp this Saturday,
October 19. Students will meet at the high school at
12:00 P.M. and practice here until approximately 5:00
P.M. They will than go to the game field where the Band
Boosters will treat them to supper from 5:00-6:00 P.M.
From 6:00 to 8:00 P.M., the band will practice under the
lights at Rebel Stadium. All of this mini-camp will be a
preparation for the state competition at Murfreesboro on
Saturday, October 26. The Band Boosters plan to charter
two busses to transport our students in style. Last
Saturday the band competed in the Obion County
Invitational Band Competition and won second in Color
Guard, second in Field Commander and second in
Percussion in Division I (small band) competition
against five other west Tennessee bands. MHS Marching
Rebels won first in Division I, Red Class 2 against
Decatur County. The pit crew, consisting of Band
Boosters, won first in the Best Pit Crew category
against all bands in both Division I and II.
The Rebel football team improved its record to 5-2 with
a hard fought 28-12 victory over the Dyer County
Choctaws. Plagued by turnovers and lackluster play, the
game turned around completely after a vicious hit by
Demerick Diggs on a kickoff coverage play that created a
Choctaw turnover and a Rebel touchdown on the next play
from scrimmage. The defense led the way by holding the
Dyer County offense to less than 100 yards. The Rebel
defense yielded a single touchdown in the game. The
other Choctaw touchdown came from a 96-yard
interception. The offense also had several bright spots.
Sophomore Cody Cook ran for over 170 yards in the game
pushing his season total to over 1000 yards for the
year. Senior Demerick Diggs also ran for over 100 yards
to pace a ground attack that had over 350 yards rushing.
The Rebels return home for their final regular home game
of the season against Chester County. This game is
another key 6-AA game that will affect our standings in
the playoff seeding. Friday night is also Senior Night.
We will recognize our senior band members, cheerleaders,
and football players at 7:00 P.M. We applaud the
contribution of these students who have represented us
in these extracurricular activities. Our attendance has
been affected by the weather in every home game this
year. Let’s give these students a great memory in this
final home game of their careers.
The B-team played last Monday night at Rebel Stadium
against Dresden High School. We have scheduled Dresden
High School for the next two years in varsity so this
game helped us gauge how games in the future would be.
The young Rebels had a slim half-time lead of 13-12. In
the second half they stretched the lead by two
touchdowns and held on to win by a 27-19 margin. The
young Rebel defense allowed two touchdowns in the waning
seconds of each half or the score could have had a
greater margin of victory. The freshmen game scheduled
for last Thursday was postponed because of inclement
weather. We also postponed our B-team game that was
scheduled for Monday, October 14. We do plan to
reschedule both games if possible.
Several dates to keep in mind are as follows:
October 17 Josten's Yearbook Video and Order Day
October 23 Retakes of School Day Photographs
October 24 ACT-Prep class at MHS Library from 6:00 -
9:00 P.M.
October 21-25 T-Cap Competency Test - Prep Classes
3:15-4:45 Monday-Thursday
