By MHS Principal Terry Howell

On Tuesday, October 15, the boys' and girls' track team competed in the Best of the West meet at the U.T. Ag Center in Jackson. The girls raced against 75 other girls from eight other A-AA schools in West Tennessee. The boys faced 100 other boys from thirteen schools. The top fifteen individuals received medals as the Best of the West Tennessee A-AA school runners. Amber King received a medal for her 12th place finish in the girls' meet. Lucy Snead placed 31st with a 27:08. Caleb Owen, Holland Hames, and Jason Bloodworth ran for 27th, 36th, and 66th respectively. The team will compete at the Region 7 A-AA Cross Country Meet in Jackson at the U.T. Ag Center this week. The top ten runners will advance to the state meet in Nashville on November 2.

Ryan Lacey, a McKenzie High School senior, has been nominated to compete in the national Principal's Leadership Award (PLA) Scholarship program, sponsored by the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP). Herff Jones, Inc. funds the PLA program. One hundred fifty national PLA winners will be chosen this spring to receive $1000 college scholarships. High School principals from across the United States could nominate one of their student leaders. Nominees were selected based on their leadership skills, participation in service organizations and clubs, achievements in the arts and sciences, employment experiences, and academic record. They are also required to write an original essay. The PLA scholarship recognizes the importance of a well-rounded education. This year Ryan serves as the president of the Student Council. She is active in the Beta Club, Science Club, Principal's Advisory Council, school drama, Spanish Club, and numerous other organizations. She has also performed many hours of community service in several other organizations. Ryan will submit her application in the near future to compete for the scholarship money.

Congratulations to John Craig Howell. John Craig, a junior member of the football team, received recognition as the Jackson Sun defensive player of the week for his efforts against Dyer County. John Craig recorded nine tackles, ten assists, a fumble recovery, two tackles for loss, a quarterback sack, and a pass break-up. The Rebel defense had an impressive game against the Choctaws by holding them to less than 100 yards total offense. Ten players received headhunter recognition for recording ten points or more for a game. The Rebels are yielding approximately 10 points per game on defense for the year.

The band will compete in the State Division I Band Competition on Saturday, October 26, at Riverside High School in Murfreesboro. The band has had several competitions leading up to this state competition and practice for many hours in preparation for this event. After their practice session on Saturday, the band hopes to continue to make improvement to score in the top eight in the state. Although young, they have shown progress and hope that their hard work culminates in state recognition. The band will travel to Murfreesboro by way of chartered buses that are largely funded from the active Band Booster organization. As with any school our size, the band relies upon the hard work, organization, and fund-raising ability of this booster club. Good luck to them as they represent our school.

A reminder that retakes for school day photographs will be Wednesday, October 23. We will use the pre-pay method for this opportunity as we did with the first. Students may pick up envelopes in this office if they want to buy a package. All students in grades 9-11 who did not have photos taken on the September 11 first take will do so at this time.

The Balfour representative will be here on October 30 to meet with seniors about graduation supplies and materials. He will meet with the senior class officers at 10:00 A.M. to focus on the invitation style to be ordered by the group. At 10:30 A.M., he will meet with all seniors in the Theater to present what Balfour has to offer for graduation purposes. The only two items that seniors will need to order are caps and gowns and diplomas and diploma covers. All the other aspects of the order are individual choice. The representative will return on November 6 at 7:15 A.M. to take orders. A $60.00 deposit is required to place an order at this time.

Parents, a reminder that report cards were issued on Tuesday, October 22. If you would like a conference with a teacher, you may call the school and we will set one up during that teacher's planning block.

The football team faced an improved Chester County Eagles team at Rebel Stadium last Friday in a key 6-AA contest. After a shaky start, the Rebels took charge in the second half to score a 25-7 victory. The game had a hodgepodge of plays to cater to any football fan -- a long pass from Matt Merrick to Jay Taylor, a long touchdown run by Demerick Diggs, two goal line stints by the Rebel defense, turnovers by both teams, and spirited play during crunch time. The Rebel region record improved to 3-1 for the season with the last region game scheduled at Huntingdon on Week 10. The Rebels overall record improved to 6-2. They travel to Lexington to battle the much improved and athletically talented Lexington Tiger squad. Last Friday we recognized several important students in three programs at our school -- these were senior members of the band, cheerleading squad, and football. Senior band members recognized were Jeff Bunn, Deanna Hickman, Matthew Holt, Nick Laws, Alissa Lee, and Crystal Mattox. Cheerleading their last regular season home game were Emily Kee and Monica Mayberry. Senior football players include Daniel Beal, Brandon Cook, Steven Dickson, Demerick Diggs, Ryan Drewry, Matthew Jones, Ricky Mathis, Matt Merrick, Chris Stephens, Jay Taylor, and Brian Winston. Our two senior football managers are Kristan Wiggins and Sara Wilson. We appreciate the time and the commitment that they and their parents have provided to make each of these programs successful.
