Notes From the High School |
|
| |
| |
|
By MHS Principal Terry Howell |

We are pleased to announce the formation of the McKenzie
High School Honors Chorus. This chorus is an
extracurricular activity initiated by English teacher
Dawn Clubb to give students the opportunity to develop
their natural musical abilities. Students had to
audition for the chorus which will meet three days a
week in the auditorium. Those singing in the chorus are
sopranos Amber Allen, Ashley Carter, Jill Thomas,
Whitney Wilson, Sydney Patterson, Kasey Nicholson, Leah
Wallace, Virginia Whitney and Hope Wyder; altos are
Kayla Dudley, Bethany Ellis, Kimberly Gaskins, Rebekah
Cooper, Brittani Bright, Tiffany Steele, and Amber King;
tenors Daniel Thomas, Jonathan Harris, Jonathan Wood,
Justin Taylor and Jeff Bunn; bass Roger Morris, Andrew
Wilson and Matt Brown; baritones Jason Arnold and
Michael Epperson. Virginia Hames will serve as
secretary, and Matthew Holt will accompany the group.
The Honor Chorus plans to sing at Veterans Day,
Christmas, spring recital, and other special occasions.
The golf team played one match last week at the Carroll
Lake Golf Course against Clarksburg and Gleason. The
girls' team split with the two schools, defeating
Clarksburg, but losing to Gleason. They saw their record
go to 4-8 for the season. Low score for the Lady Rebels
was Courtney Creasy with a 58. The boys improved to 11-4
with two wins over the visiting teams. Freshmen Jake
Brown and Marshall Smith paved the way to victory with a
41 and 44 respectively. This week's matches are at Milan
on Monday and at Carroll Lake on Tuesday against Gleason
and Dresden. On Monday, September 16, the boys will
compete in the district tournament at Tennessee River
Golf Course near Parsons.
Our cross country team will travel to Jackson on
Wednesday to compete in the U.S.J. Invitational. Results
of last week's J.C.M. meet are not available. We do know
that all of our runners completed the race and that most
of them finished in the top half of the more than 100
runners for girls and 100 male runners. Tenia King has
worked with these young people after school. It has been
a demanding season with high temperatures and high
humidity.
Parent-Teacher Conference will be Thursday, September
12, from 3:30 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. This marks the end of
the first quarter of school for the first semester.
Teachers will have progress reports on each student and
will advise parents in areas of strength and areas to
strengthen. I think that this meeting is particularly
important as parents can meet teachers and learn first
hand about expectations, class policies, grading
procedure, and the general welfare of the student in
that class. Sometimes parents assume because a child is
in high school, parent-teacher conferences are not
needed. Let me assure you that these meetings are as
vital as at any age. I strongly encourage you to attend
regardless of the grade performance of your child.
School Day Pictures will be Wednesday, September 11. We
passed out the pre-pay envelopes on Monday for those
students who choose to purchase a package of pictures.
All students in grades 9-11 will have their photographs
taken for the yearbook. Students are not to wear shirts
bearing symbols of any kind, rock and roll band shirts,
wrestling shirts, or anything not appropriate to school
students. Photographs will be processed and returned
within the next 3-4 weeks. We will have retakes of
pictures later in the year.
On Monday, we passed out 874 Forms to all of our
students. This form must be signed and completed by
parents so that we can receive federal money based upon
the answers in the questionnaire. I ask all parents to
complete this promptly and return it to school as soon
as possible. Our school can receive several thousand
dollars based upon the answers to the questions.
The football team had their first home game of the year
against Region 6-AA foe Camden. The Rebels opened strong
by scoring on their first possession of the game and
then by closing the first half with a 90 yard kick-off
return. In the second half the Rebels protected their
28-10 half-time lead by giving up a single touchdown to
win their first game of the year 28-17. Our team
continues to gain experience with 21 of the 22 slots on
offense and defense being manned by new personnel than
last year. Fatigue and the hot, humid weather appeared
to be factors as the Rebels had several players going on
offense and defense. Play becomes more intense this week
as the Rebels play host to the Golden Tide of Trenton
Peabody at Rebel Stadium at 7:30P.M. this Friday. Come
out and support the Rebels as they try to up their
record 2-1 against a very good opponent.
This week we will continue our school-wide attempt to
improve our Writing Assessment scores by having a
writing prompt on Thursday. Students in each class will
address the same prompt and write a persuasive essay as
the topic. We hope to improve our overall writing
proficiency to 75% this year and even better in the
years to after. This is the second year that we have
focused on improving writing scores and we hope to do
better with each assessment. The writing assessment is a
part of our school-wide Commissioner's Report Card.
Several upcoming events include the following:
- Band Competition at Milan on September 21
- Homecoming against West Carroll on September 27
- Band Competition at Brighton on September 28
