Two students selected by the student body as Mr. and Miss McKenzie High School were Emily Kee and Jay Taylor. Congratulations to these students for being recognized by their peers for these honors.

The golf team completed their regular season with two matches last week. Both teams lost to Milan in an away match last Monday. The girls were paced by Courtney Creasy with a 57. The boys had John French as their team's low scorer with a 45. Last Tuesday they returned to action at Carroll Lake Golf Course against Dresden. The girls narrowly lost with Courtney Creasy shooting a 55 and Ashley Creasy scoring a 57. The girls ended their regular season with a 4-10 overall record. Ashley Creasy played her last home match for the Lady Rebels in this her senior year. The boys defeated their Dresden counterparts by a 170-181 score. Senior Mark Anderson saved his best match for the last with a medalist round of 40. Freshmen Marshall Smith and Justin Wilson each carded a 43. Mark and J.C. Johnsonius played their last matches for the Rebels in ending their senior season. The boys upped their record to 12-5. On Monday, September 16, they were scheduled to play in the district tournament at Tennessee River. If they played well and qualified, they will advance to the regional tournament at Tennessee River on Monday, September 23.

Many of our clubs and organizations involve themselves in community service projects. On September 7, the Leo Club, the high school branch of the Lions Club, assisted the parents of the Little Rebel Football Team in a yard sale to raise money for the operating expense of the team. Members had to sacrifice part of their Saturday morning to work at the sale or donate items for the sale. The Leo Club has actively worked in many service projects and has assisted the Lions Club in many of their fundraisers. The Leo Club is sponsored by Ms. Dianne Anderson.

We are pleased to announce Jay Taylor and Julie Smith as the high school's nominees for the Wendy's High School Heissman Award. This program, created by Wendy's Old-Fashioned Hamburger Restaurants, recognizes the nation's top high school seniors who best exemplify a supreme "scholar-citizen-athlete." These students have been nominated by the high school coaching staff and principal for their academic aptitude, athletic talent, and display of commitment in and out of the classroom. In its 9th year, this program partners Wendy's, the National Association of Secondary School Principals, and the Downtown Athletic Club. Nominations for the award are based on factors such as grade point average, civic involvement, sports, awards, clubs, and leadership positions. Congratulations to Jay and Julie for this recognition.

The band will begin its competitive season this Saturday. They will travel to Milan to perform in the Milan Invitational Competition. Band members spend many hours after school working on their field show to present at halftime of football games and at the various competitions in the area. The band will have about four Saturday contests before the state competition at Murfreesboro Riverside on Saturday, October 26. The band has about 50 members and is directed by Keith Breeden. The active Band Boosters help to supplement the expenses of the band through a variety of fundraising events.

The cross country teams have competed in two meets so far this year. At the J.C.M. meet at the U.T. Ag Center, Sarah Hartz finished 27th; Amber King, 25th; Julie Smith, 43rd; and Lucy Snead, 45th in the girls' meet with about 125 people in the race. At the same meet for the boys' portion, Holland Hames earned 53rd place and Caleb Owen, 54th place. The boys' race also had about 125 entrants. At the U.S.J. meet, Amber placed 22nd, Lucy, 53rd; and Ashley Murrey, 70th. Caleb and Holland finished 54th and 56th respectively. All runners improved their times from one meet to the next. The teams had a meet scheduled at Lexington on Monday, September 16 and one in Dyersburg on Monday, September 23.

The Rebels upped their record to 2 and 1 with a hard-fought 7-6 victory over the Golden Tide of Trenton Peabody. This non-region game was important as the Rebels defeated a quality opponent and had many aspects of its team to play at a high level. The offense mustered a 17-play, 75 yard drive that consumed 91/2 minutes of the clock to take the lead 7-6. The defense allowed 7 first downs and less than 150 yards of total offense for the visitors. Although the game was delayed by lightning and was interrupted by two downpours, the temperature was much more pleasant than the previous two weeks. This week the Rebels return to region play with a trip to Adamsville. They return home on September 27 with Homecoming against West Carroll.

School will not be in session on Monday, September 23.
