The boys' golf team competed in the district golf tournament at the Tennessee River Golf Course on Monday, September 16. They finished 4th in the tournament and ended their team season with a record of 14-8. Four individuals qualified for the regional tournament to be played at the same site on Monday, September 23. These golfers are freshman Marshall Smith who shot an 83, freshman Craig Broadbent with an 89, junior John French with a 94, and freshman Justin Wilson with a 94. Marshall placed 6th in the tournament out of 30 golfers.

We are always proud when one of our students does well in activities that are not school-related necessarily. Junior Mallory Brandon recently won the Tennessee State 3-D Barrel Horse Youth Championship at the University of Tennessee at Martin. Mallory competed against 234 contestants to qualify for the World 3-D Barrel Horse Youth Championship in Jackson, Mississippi. That competition will be in the summer of 2003.

The freshmen football team lost a close contest to Union City last Monday night by a score of 14-7. The freshmen have played one other game falling to Lexington earlier in the year. These games are excellent preparation for varsity play. The freshmen play a 7-game schedule. The B-team has also played two games. They defeated Obion County 56-8 and Bruceton 21-18. The B-team has a 5-game schedule. The B-team has players in grades 9-11 who are developing their skills so that they can contribute to the varsity team in the near future.

This week is Homecoming Week at McKenzie High School. The Student Council has planned a full week of activities with Dress-up Days, Intramural contests, and class competitions. Wednesday is Cowboy Day; Thursday is Twin Day; and Friday is the traditional Red and Gray Day. Students will compete in volleyball intramurals during homeroom throughout the week with classes vying against one another. Classes will also compete with posters and signs decorating the hallways in the school. Each class will also create a run-through sign for their football players. The signs will be judged on creativity and overall appearance. The run-through signs will be used in the pep rally. On Friday the Student Council will sponsor a Class Feud Game Show, the finals of intramural volleyball, a talent show, and pep rally. The talent show from 12:30 - 1:30 always showcases some great student talent at our school. The Homecoming dance will be after the game against West Carroll from 10:00 P.M. to 12:00 P.M. The recognition of the queen and her court will begin at 7:00 P.M. Friday night. Those students selected by the student body and the M-Club are Savanna Cooper, Heather Flippin, Jennifer Johnson, Emily Kee, Carrie Stambaugh, and Becky Toombs.

The girls' and boys' cross-country teams ran in the Lexington Cross Country Meet on Monday, September 16. Junior Amber King won a medal by finishing in 10th place with a time of 23:55. Julie Smith finished in 27th place, Lucy Snead in 39th, and Ashley Murrey in 57th. With the boys, Holland Hames continued to improve with a 31st place finish. Caleb Owen had a 33rd place finish and Jason Bloodworth, 61st. All members improved their times from the previous week. The team will run in the Dyersburg Invitational on Monday, September 23 and in the Dyer County meet on Monday, September 30.

On Thursday, September 12, we had our fall Parent-Teacher Conferences. Overall we had good attendance at this first meeting. Parents were able to meet with teachers and receive progress reports for the first 41/2 weeks. We did record the following results in regard to attendance: In the 9th grade 58 parents out of 112 students came to the conferences for a 52% total. In the 10th grade 52 parents out of 82 students attended for a 63% total. The 11th grade had 50 parents of 93 students for 54%, and the 12th grade had 47 parents of 88 students for 53%. All told, we had 207 parents out of 375 students for 55%. Our goal remains 75%, which we will try to meet with the conferences in the spring. As always, parents are welcomed to call school to inquire about student progress in individual classes. Teachers are available during planning blocks to confer with parents via telephone or face-to-face meetings.

The band will continue its competitive season this Saturday as they travel to perform in the Gibson County Invitational Marching Competition. Last Saturday they competed at the Milan Invitational Competition with the band earning second in the Bronze Class in overall competition, first in Percussion, second in Guard, and third in Field Commander. The "Pit Crew", manned by boosters of the band, won first in Division I competition. The band is directed by Keith Breeden. Field Commander is junior Kayla Bomar. Section leaders are as follows: Crystal Mattox and Alissa Lee, guard; Bethany Ellis and Jason Arnold, pit; Chase Barton, low brass; Christy Lowe, trumpets; Rebekah Cooper and Renee Wilson, woodwinds; Amanda Allen, French horns; and Matthew Holt, percussion. The competitive season reaches its climax with the state competition in Murfreesboro on October 26.

Last week several organizations elected their officers for this year. D.E.C.A. (Distributive Education Clubs of America) chose these officers: Emily Kee, president; Thomas Clark, vice-present; Matt Jones, treasurer; Jennifer Summers, reporter; Jasmine McMackins, secretary; and Savanna Cooper and Bryan Huffman, student council representatives. D.E.C.A. involves itself in regional and state competitions. It is the student organization for our marketing and entrepreneurship classes. The Library Club also elected its officers. The club chose Jennifer Johnson, president; Kasey Nicholson, vice-president; Rachel Pruiett, secretary; Ty Winkler, treasurer; Jillian Maynard, student council representative; and Sydney Patterson, reporter. The Library Club has two major service projects. They read to elementary students on Dr. Seuss Day and they record books on cassette for middle school students. They annually try to attend a play at T-PAC for their social outing. The club is devoted to encouraging reading and literacy in our school system.
