Our PTO will hold its first meeting on September 30 at 6:30 in the middle school library. The past couple of years the PTO has provided our school with a trophy case, teacher resources, an upgraded computer lab that has 50 new machines and the wonderful awning that is now on the front of our building. All of the efforts of the PTO directly benefit our children. We invite all parents to join and participate in the activities of the PTO. The PTO is continuing the collection of used ink cartridges and cell phones. Instead of throwing them away just send them to the school.

Our football team has lost two games to highly talented Dresden and Huntingdon teams. Our next games are on the road September 5 at Hollow Rock-Bruceton Central and September 12 at West Carroll. Come and support the team as we turn our season around.

On Friday, September 6, Student Council elections will be held. Officers will be elected as follows: President, vice-president, secretary/treasurer and parliamentarian. Candidates must have a "C" average, satisfactory conduct, worthy character and leadership ability. The candidates hang campaign posters and video a speech that is shown to the student body on the morning of elections.

Our clubs and organizations begin their monthly meetings in September. They are involved in various service projects throughout the school year. They also provide for our students and teacher time together outside the academic setting. We have Student Council, Beta Club, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Builders Club and Future Teachers Association.

Here are a couple of dates to keep in mind. The students will place yearbook orders on September 18. Parent-Teachers Conference will be September 26 from, 3:30 to 7:00 p.m.

The cross country team has its first meet of the year scheduled for Wednesday, September 4, at the U.T. Ag Center in Jackson. Tenia King has these girls competing in cross country: Mallory Brandon, Sarah Hartz, Mary Holland, Amber King, Ashley Murrey, Julie Smith, and Lucy Snead. Boys who have committed to participate are Jason Bloodworth, Holland Hames, Chance Hudgins, Caleb Owen, and Ty Winkler. These two teams will have 7-8 meets before the regional meet which determines those in the state meet. This year does mark our second year for cross country with the girls, and the first with the boys.

The golf team had two away matches and one home match last week. Against Camden and Huntingdon, the boys team finished second, losing by two strokes to Camden. Junior John French shot a 42 to pace the McKenzie squad. On Tuesday of last week at Carroll Lake, the boys again split their three-way match by defeating Gleason, but losing to Westview again by two strokes. John French showed his consistency with a 42 and freshman Marshall Smith fired a 41. Although the girls lost to both of their opponents, senior Ashley Creasy improved her score to a 57. On Thursday the team traveled to Riverside to the Tennessee River Golf Course. Courtney Creasy shot a 60 to lead our girls who finished behind Bolivar and Riverside. Our boys defeated the team from Riverside, but lost to Bolivar. John French was the low scorer for the Rebels with a 41. This course is the location of the district and regional matches in a few weeks. On Thursday of this week, the golf team plays Gleason and Clarksburg at Carroll Lake Golf Course. On Monday, September 9, they journey to Milan in a head-to-head competition. They return to the familiar backdrop of Carroll Lake on Wednesday, September 10 to play Gleason and Dresden. Both boys' and girls' teams have many underclassmen, and each team has only one senior. The future looks promising for McKenzie golf. The team is coached by veteran Larry Joe Smith.

We will have School Day pictures on Wednesday, September 11. The previous Monday we will pass out envelopes and use the pre-pay method that we have used for several years. No student is required to purchase photographs, but all will have shots taken for the yearbook. Seniors should have already taken their senior pictures with Don Hayes Photography. If they chose to have someone else do the photographs, they need to have a sitting with Mr. Hayes for a formal shot for the yearbook and class composite. Cost of that is $25.00.

The band has two upcoming events of interest. On Saturday, the guard will sponsor a bake sale and car wash at Save-A-Lot. With 18 members of the guard and extensive costumes and props, the guard is actively raising funds. This activity is sponsored by the Band Boosters which supports the marching band in many different ways. The Band Boosters will have their biggest fundraiser overall with the E.W. James BBQ supper on Tuesday, September 10. Tickets are available at the school or from any high school band member for $5.00. The food is always good and the cause is admirable. Come out and support the band.

The junior class continues its magazine sales this week. They hope to sell 700 magazines and average about 7 magazines a person. Please support these students as they make money to fund their class activities. Their most expensive cost is the annual Junior-Senior Prom which they host. Q.S.P. offers 100's of magazines. Students can sell new subscriptions or they can renew existing subscriptions. The first deadline for the magazine sales is Wednesday, September 4.

We have several juniors and seniors who will need to be re-assessed for the TCAP Competency Test during the week of October 21-25. I will send letters out this week to the parents of students needing to take the test. The successful passage of this test is a requirement to earn a regular high school diploma for the Class of 2003 and the Class of 2004. We plan to meet with all of those students to survey them as to the best time to offer a class to polish their skills in preparation for the test. Regardless, the library is open each morning at 7:30, during homeroom, and after school. Ms. Dianne Anderson, our librarian, will offer preparation for this test. Again, since it is a graduation requirement, students should take the class to prepare for the test.

On Thursday, September 12, we will have our annual Parent-Teacher Conference. This will mark the end of the first 41/2 week of school. I encourage all parents to attend to meet teachers and to get a first hand account of a teacher's classroom policies and procedures.
