Rebels Lose Heartbreaker to War Eagles

McKenzie's Rebels had an opportunity to tie the game at the 1.8 mark, but hit only one of two shots at the line. Still, the Rebels missed three other opportunities at the line earlier in the game as well, hitting seven of 11 for the night. The War Eagles were seven of eight for the night. McKenzie also led on three-point shots with John French hitting three for the game as he led all scorers with 21 points.

West Carroll trailed 8-0 before they began to turn the game around, but still trailed 14-6 after one period. By intermission they had narrowed the gap to two points as McKenzie held a 19-17 advantage. After three, West Carroll had a 28-26 advantage and then won the game 33-32.

Darren Lykes led the War Eagle attack with 11 points while John Taylor was close by with nine and Xavier Webb connected for eight. With 2:29 on the board, French committed a foul which was the fourth in the official book, but the fifth in the opponents' book. Following a brief time-out, the two scorekeepers were placed side by side for the remainder of the game and French remained in the game. At the 11.2 second mark, Lykes was fouled and went to the line to shoot one and one as West Carroll led 32-31. He hit the first but missed the second and the Rebels quickly took the ball to their end of the court with Daniel Duncan fouled on the attempted tying shot. He went to the line and also hit the first, but missed the second as time expired and West Carroll won the game.

In a Tuesday night game, the Rebels lost to Stewart County as French led in that game with 13 followed by Ryan Drewry with nine. 10 of McKenzie's players put points on the board in the 57-43 loss. The Rebels are 0-2 for the season.

War Eagles Defeat Dresden in Opening Game

West Carroll's War Eagles and Lady War Eagles opened their 2002-03 season on November 25 in games with Dresden. The Lady War Eagles began a 0-4 run with a loss to the Lady Lions while the War Eagles began a 2-2 run in the same game.

War Eagles 72-Lions 66

John Taylor was one of three War Eagles in double figures in the Dresden game, leading all scorers with 40 total points while Kevin Thomas added 11 and Xavier Webb scored 10 in the victory. Eddie Miller led Dresden with 18 while Josh McDaniel added 17 for the Lions. West Carroll led throughout the game over their non-district opponent.

INDIVIDUAL STATISTICS:
WEST CARROLL: Taylor 40, Thomas 11, Webb 10, Cameron Hunt 6, Chris Baker 5.

Lady War Eagles 56-Lady Lions 77

In the night's opening game, West Carroll's Brittany Baker and Jessica Murphy both hit double figures with Baker scoring 29 and Murphy adding 13. Kaci Bailey led the Lady Lions with 25 and Allica Austin scored 18.

INDIVIDUAL STATISTICS:
WEST CARROLL: Baker 29, Murphy 13, Velma Carter 7, April Gilliam 7.

On November 26, both teams took a loss in matches with Greenfield.

Lady War Eagles 26-Lady Yellowjackets 45

None of the Lady War Eagles was able to score in double figures against Greenfield while Michelle Medling scored 17 and Ashley Alben added 14 for the Lady Yellowjackets. Murphy and Baker led scoring with nine and eight respectively.

War Eagles 48-Yellowjackets 55

The War Eagles and Yellowjackets both got off to a slow start in their first meeting of the season with the Yellowjackets leading 7-3 after one and West Carroll coming back to lead 24-22 at intermission. By the end of three, Greenfield had a 40-32 lead and won by a seven point margin. John Taylor and Xavier Webb scored 22 and 20 for the War Eagles while Brandon Shane and Clint Blackburn scored 15 each for Greenfield and Jeremy Smith added 11.

Wildcats Surge Past Oakwood

The Bethel College Wildcat basketball team improved to 6-5 on the season on Thursday night with a 91-73 victory over the Oakwood College Ambassadors.

After building a 13-point lead (33-20) late in first half, Oakwood went on a 13-0 fun in the final 5:00 of the half to tie the game at intermission at 33-33. The Wildcats got on track in the second half shooting 60% from the field (18/30) en route to the big victory.

Drew Woods, a sophomore from Jackson, paced the Wildcat scoring effort with 27 points on 9 of 16 shooting (3 of 4 from three-point range). Woods also had a game high 8 assists and pulled down 7 rebounds. Myron McCrary came off the bench to hit 7 of 9 attempts and ended the game with 21 points and had 7 rebounds.

The Wildcat defense forced 22 Ambassador turnovers and limited Oakwood to 39% shooting from the field. Adriene Hardgrove led Oakwood (5-5) in scoring with 14 points.

The Cats win their second consecutive game and will look to improve to 7-5 on Monday night when they travel to Louisville, KY to face Shawnee Baptist College. Bethel will travel to Tennessee Temple on Thursday December 12 and to UT-Martin on December 14 before they wrap up the first half with a home game on Monday, December 16 against Crichton College at 7:00 pm.
