McKenzie Middle School Soccer Team
Wins Fourth Game in Initial Season |

The McKenzie Middle School has begun a soccer program and
for the past few weeks have been playing area schools.
Monday, they picked up their fourth victory over Lexington
and improved their record to 4-3. Tuesday, they traveled
to Palmersville, a team they defeated earlier this season
and will conclude the season next Monday at home against
Huntingdon, another team they defeated earlier in the
season. The game will be played at 5:00 p.m. at the
football practice field behind the home stands at Rebel
Field. Those participating in this first season are being
coached by Jason Driggers. In addition to Lexington,
Palmersville, and Huntingdon, the Rebels defeated the team
from Union City. They lost to Dyersburg and twice to
Martin.

Lady Rebels Win Four Games in Tournament Action, Four in
Regular Season Action |

The Lady Rebels had a successful week after winning
four of their five games at the Covington Tournament over
the weekend. They defeated Martin Westview on Monday,
defeated Riverside in a double header on Tuesday and then
won a 3-2 decision over Camden on Thursday.
In tournament action, the Lady Rebels faced Union City in
their first game and won the game 9-0, improving to 13-4
overall. Summer Poff improved her record to 6-2 with the
victory. Angie Birdwell led the Lady Rebels in hits with
three singles while Becky Toombs and Leah Wallace also had
singles. Poff struck out six in the win.
The second game was against Halls and the Lady Rebels
picked up a 6-1 victory as they improved to 14-4 overall.
Brittany Carpenter improved to 8-1 for the season as she
struck out five batters. McKenzie took a 4-0 lead in the
first inning as Birdwell, Kristin Wiggins, Whitney Townes
and Wallace all singled. Wiggins and Townes led hitting
with two each. Wiggins and Amanda Rogers each had a
double.
In the Lady Rebels third victory, they played Humboldt
and won a 7-2 decision with Poff improving to 7-3 for the
season. Birdwell led in hits with a pair of singles while
Carpenter, Wiggins, Toombs and Wallace each had singles.
Poff struck out nine batters in the victory.
Their fourth win came over Jackson Central-Merry when
Carpenter struck out two batters in the 3-2 victory. The
Lady Rebels scored two runs in the first inning as both
Toombs and Poff singled. JCM tied the game in the third
inning on a trio of hits and the game remained tied until
the sixth inning when Wiggins led off with a triple and
then was scored on a single from Toombs. The Lady Rebels
were now 16-4 overall.
The loss came against Munford. Poff picked up her fourth
loss for the season in what was a tight ball game until
the fifth inning when Munford scored five runs on six
hits. Carpenter and Wallace each had singles and Wiggins a
triple in the loss.
Regular season action returned against Westview as the
Lady Rebels hit the ball extremely well and won 14-8.
Carpenter, Birdwell and Poff each had three singles.
Rogers hit the only double for the day. Carpenter was
credited with the win, improving to 10-1 for the season
while Rachael Clark came in to relieve.
The Lady Rebels traveled to Riverside on Tuesday and
picked up a pair of victories. In the first game,
Riverside took a 2-0 lead in the first inning, but the
Lady Rebels came back in the third inning to tie the game
and then scored five runs in the fourth to ultimately win
7-3. Poff improved to 8-4 with the victory. Carpenter led
in hits with a pair of singles while Rogers had a double
and Toombs had a homerun. The Lady Rebels improved to18-5
overall.
In the second game, the Lady Rebels picked up a 13-5
victory with Carpenter striking out three Lady Panthers to
pick up her eleventh win of the season. Carpenter also led
in hits with three singles while Birdwell had a pair of
singles and Wiggins had a single and a double. The Lady
Rebels took a 7-0 lead in the second inning and led
throughout the game.
Thursday afternoon, the Lady Rebels had a close encounter
with the Lady Lions of Camden and sought to overcome an
earlier season loss. Carpenter walked to lead off the
bottom of the first inning and ultimately scored as
Wiggins got the only hit of the inning. McKenzie led 1-0
after one. Camden had two doubles and two singles in the
top of the third to score two runs and lead 2-1.
Carpenter, who picked up her twelfth win of the season,
gave up only one more hit in the game however and no more
runs as the Lady Rebels played good defense. Carpenter led
off the fifth inning with a double and then scored to tie
the game and Rogers led off with a walk in the sixth
inning and scored. The Lady Rebels had three up and three
down in the top of the seventh inning and struck out the
final batter (Carpenter's fifth for the day) for the 3-2
decision.

The McKenzie Rebel tennis teams hosted Gibson County on
Monday, April 15. The girls won all four matches with the
following scores: Robyn Winkler: 8-3, Jadrea Allen: 8-0,
Jessica Johnson: 8-4, and the doubles team of Winkler and
Allen 8-1. The boys team also had four wins with Andrew
Bateman at 8-2, Jesse King at 8-5, Matt Lewis at 8-3 and
the doubles team of Lewis and King at 8-6.On Tuesday,
April 16, the Rebels hosted a strong Huntingdon team. The
girls had three victories with Michelle Chandel (8-1)
winning her singles match and the doubles teams of Chandel
and Winkler and Allen and Johnson winning 8-5 and 8-6
respectively.
David King and Daniel Duncan won their singles matches at
8-0 and 8-3 respectively as the boys picked up a pair of
wins.
The Rebels will have three matches next week beginning
with Milan on the road, Gibson County at home on Tuesday
and then traveling to Lexington on Thursday. |
