The annual Huntingdon Jamboree drew a huge crowd despite threatening clouds and sporadic drizzle. In the annual event, McKenzie looked good against the team that ended their 2001 season, Martin Westview and Huntingdon put up a gallant fight against the Class 5-A Henry County Patriots as they tallied losses. The quicker and determined West Carroll War Eagles and Hollow Rock-Bruceton Tigers gained wins over Camden and Lexington respectively.

Martin Westview 14-McKenzie 6

In the night's opening contest, McKenzie gained the first offensive opportunity, but lost it on a fumble, which was quickly recovered and returned 54 yards for a touchdown by Andrew Laney for the Chargers. After the PAT by C.W. West, the Chargers took a 7-0 lead with 6:26 remaining on the first quarter clock.

The Rebels came back to be stopped quickly by the chargers for no gain as Jay Taylor and Brad Campbell were held by LeDarius Davis and Chris Wilson respectively. On third and 10 a Matt Merrick pass intended for Taylor was off the mark and Daniel Duncan entered to punt the ball to the Martin 32-yard line where they quickly took to the air. Taylor spotted the ball and intercepted for the Rebels, leaving 28 yards between the Rebels and a score of their own.

On first down, Cody Cook moved around right end and was stopped by Rafeal Hill after a gain of five. On second down, Demerick Diggs brought through the middle of the Charger line and picked up a first down at the Charger 10 yard line. Cook again took the ball around right end and entered the end zone with 1:23 remaining on the clock and the score was narrowed to 7-6. Freshman John Kermit Laughrey entered to attempt the PAT and the ball moved wide to the right, leaving the Chargers in control at 7-6.

Westview began their offensive possession with Robert Williamson moving for a gain of three yards before Merrick and John Howell stopped him. On second down, a pass to Brannon Bishop was good for a first down at the Martin 41 before Matt Jones stopped him. A first down pass was incomplete, but then Hill was given the ball and rushed 59 yards for the touchdown with no time remaining on the first quarter clock. West again hit the PAT giving the Chargers a 14-6 advantage.

McKenzie took over at their own 30 yards line as the second quarter began and managed to pick several first downs as Cook ran for a gain of five while Diggs picked up three more yards. Cook gained the first down at the 42 moments later. Defensively, Alex Brown and Wilson were dominant for the Chargers. Diggs moved up the middle for a gain of two yards and then Taylor picked up three up the middle as a host of Chargers held. On third down a penalty on the Chargers gave McKenzie a third and two and Cook gained the first down at the Westview 45 yard line. Diggs moved up the middle for eight while Cook was stopped after a gain of one. Diggs then moved right to the Chargers 31 before Victor Evans brought him down. Diggs picked up two, McKenzie was assessed a procedure penalty and then Merrick gained one before he was stopped by Laney. On third and 12, Cook was hit hard and the ball stripped from his grasp. Westview's Williamson recovered and the Chargers took over at their own 26-yard line.

A pass was incomplete as Brandon Cook hit the quarterback. A second down pass was also incomplete and on third down, Brown moved around right end, only to be stopped by Howell after a gain of only one. West punted the ball to a waiting Randy Lacey, who took a knee on the fair catch.

McKenzie took over with only 1:03 remaining on the clock at their own 42-yard line. On first down, Diggs was held for a loss by Davis and on second down, Daniel Beal was stopped after a gain of four. An incomplete pass on third down ended the second quarter as Westview won 14-6.

Henry County 21-Huntingdon 7

In the night's second contest, host Huntingdon met the 5-A Patriots of Henry County Huntingdon gained the first offensive opportunity and on first down, Terrance Bell took the ball to the right and into Patriot territory before Robert Beard stopped him at the 44-yard line. On first down, Matt Lange took the ball right for a gain of four with Chris Haynes on the stop. Quarterback Justin Truett took the ball right for three more yards with Chris Atkins on the tackle. On third down, the ball was fumbled and recovered by Truett and on fourth and four, the Mustangs punted to the Henry County 15-yard line.

On first down, Atkins took the ball for a slight gain with Kenneth Porter on the tackle. The Patriots picked up a first down at their own 29 and then Nolan Poteete held and took the ball for a loss of two as Kirk Butler and Stephen Wright brought him down. On second down, Atkins moved for a loss of three as Hunter Hastings made the tackle Poteete passed the ball to Atkins for a first down at the Huntingdon 37. On first down, Mustang Nathan Wallace recovered a fumble and Huntingdon took over at their own 37-yard line.

Lange moved for a gain of five and Kenneth Porter moved left for a first down at the 50-yard line, with John Ross Hudson on the second tackle Lange moved up the middle with Eric Walker on the stop and then Bell moved left for two with Josh Taylor on the tackle. On third and four, Porter picked up another first down at the Patriot 40-yard line. Robert Weathers took the ball up the middle for a gain of one. Truett completed a pass to Larry Patton in the end zone with 2:27 remaining on the clock and the Mustangs led 6-0. Mark Newsome kicked the PAT good and the Stangs led 7-0.

The Patriots needed eight plays to tie the game at the 9:56 mark of the second quarter. Poteete completed passes to Haynes and Taylor with Poteete and Robert Beard on the running attack. Defensively, Weathers, Kenneth Hillsman, Wallace, Brain Nellett, Lavanda Williams and Zack Davis played hard for the Stangs. Ultimately Poteete connected with Taylor for the second time in the drive for the touchdown and Josh Sanders PAT split the uprights as Westview tied the game at seven.

Lange moved for a gain of three while Bell was held for a loss of three by Stephen Fitzgerald and Taylor respectively. Porter picked up three and then Truett successfully passed the ball to Scott Hampton for a first down at the 40. Lange was held by Beard after a gain of two and Bell was stopped at the Mustang 36, the ball fell loose and it was recovered by Taylor for the Patriots.

Henry County took over at the Mustang 36 yard line. Davis deflected a pass and then on second down, Poteete pitched the ball to Taylor who picked up seven yards before Trevor Sanders and Hastings stopped him. On third and three, Taylor moved up the middle to the Mustangs 25-yard line before Hastings and Hillsman stopped him. Using short runs, the Patriots entered the end zone six plays later on a pass to Taylor. With 3:44 remaining, the PAT was good and Henry County now led 14-7.

After a three plays ending in a loss of five, the Stangs Nellett entered to punt the ball to the Huntingdon 44 yard line.
Henry County had a fast series with only three plays needed for the touchdown at the 1:21 mark. Atkins broke two tackles on his 31-yard jaunt to pay dirt and after the PAT, the Patriots led 21-7.

Lange moved the ball for a gain of one and then a pass from Truett to Newsome at the Huntingdon 46 was good for the first down. Truett moved around right end and was out of bounds after a gain of one. Weathers picked up a first down and with only 5.9 seconds remaining, the Stangs attempted a final pass, which was deflected. Henry County won the game 21-7.

West Carroll 20-Camden 7

West Carroll came out looking sharp as they began their 2002 season. There was more quickness offensively and defensively as they played a good Class AA team from Camden. On the first series, Camden managed to score, but only after some tough defense by the War Eagles. Shane Depriest, Jason Lott, Jeremiah Johnson, Robert Smith, Ethan Thompson and Justin Smith were in on the tackles for the War Eagles as the Lions drove the ball steadily down the field. After reaching the three-yard line on a pass to Jesse Leonard, Heath Yoder took the ball the final yardage at the 7:03 mark to score. The PAT by Clay Carruth was good and the Lions led 7-0.

The War Eagle offense came out strong with Chancy Depriest getting the first opportunity to move the ball and he picked up nine yards. Shane Depriest then moved up the middle for the first down at the Camden 48 yard line. J. Johnson moved left and an inadvertent face mask penalty gave the War Eagles a first and five opportunity. S. Depriest got the nod and moved the ball to the 27-yard line for the first down. A motion penalty against the War Eagles moved the ball back five yards and then S. Depriest again got the nod and picked up 11 yards. Another five-yard penalty against West Carroll made it second and nine, but Kevin Gentile found running room around right end and found the end zone after a run of 26 yards at the 4:51 mark. The conversion attempt was no good, leaving Camden with a 7-6 advantage.
Rick Coleman and S. Depriest led the defensive attack, which allowed only three yards before Camden punted the ball to Johnson.

West Carroll took over at their own 34-yard line where S. Depriest made two runs, both up the middle. On the second run he moved to the sideline and 40 yards to pay dirt at the 3:04 mark of the first quarter. Quarterback Chris Cannon held and picked up the two-point conversion to give West Carroll a 14-7 advantage.

Camden again found some success as they moved the ball into the second quarter of their game. Although Lott, Gentile, Cody Cunningham, Brooks Blackketter, Kevin Taylor, J. Smith, Cannon, Chris Rimmer, and Wesley Arnold made successful tackles, as the first quarter ended, the Lions were inside the War Eagles 11-yard line. As the second quarter began, the War Eagles were again tough as R. Smith broke through the line to catch Josh Boyd for a loss of three. Gentile then sacked Ben Tinkle for a loss of 12 and a fourth down pass was incomplete, returning the ball to the War Eagles at their own 23-yard line.

In less than three minutes, the War Eagles again scored, this time defensively. S. Depriest moved for three yards to begin West Carroll's next offensive series, but an incomplete pass was followed by Depriest being held for no gain on and fourth and seven, Jordan Black punted the ball to Camden at their own 25 yard line. On first down, Johnson held for no gain and on second down, the Lions took to the air, Johnson intercepted the ball and ran into the end zone at the 5:47 mark. The two-point conversion attempt was thwarted and the War Eagles now led 20-7.

After four plays the War Eagles took over at the 50-yard line and began to move the ball again toward the end zone.
C. Depriest moved the ball for a gain of 15 yards at the Camden 35-yard line. Gentile picked up eight and then gained another first down at the 23. Gentile took the ball a third time to the nine-yard line and with just over a minute remaining. West Carroll Coach Chris Rich instructed quarterback Cannon to take a knee and run out the clock. The War Eagles won the game 20-7.

Hollow Rock-Bruceton 12-Lexington 6

The blue Tigers met the red Tigers in the final game of the night. The Hollow Rock-Bruceton Central Tigers were dominant for much of the contest, but were unable to sustain their first drive. With the first offensive opportunity, Central's senior tailback Patrick Willis moved around right end for 17 yards to begin the series. At that point, Lexington tightened their defensive efforts and Willis was able to pick up only five on his second run. On second down, Keith McGee moved for one while Willis was held a yard shy of the first down. Terry Parker came in to punt the ball and Lexington took over at their own 15-yard line.

Defensively, Michael Aldridge, Kevin Hurt, Josh Chapple, and Scott Maness held Lexington to only five total yards and the punt was shanked and out of bounds at their own 31 yard line.
On their second offensive opportunity, a pass from quarterback Josh Edwards to Aldridge was incomplete. Willis was held for a loss of two and then Aldridge moved the ball up the middle for a gain of seven. Willis moved right and picked up a first down at the Lexington 18. McGee was held for a loss of five while Edwards held and moved left for a first down at the five. A pass to Parker brought six points with 3:16 remaining in the first quarter of action, but Willis' PAT attempt was wide to the right as Central took a 6-0 lead.

The Lexington Tigers then began a sustained drive to pay dirt, ending just as the second quarter began. Hurt, Matt Forrest, Chapple, Edwards, and Willis were on the defensive effort, but with only one yard remaining for Lexington as the second quarter began, quarterback Ty Evans broke the plane and the Lexington Tigers tied the game at six. The conversion attempt was no good and with 9:57 remaining to play, Central took over once again.
After a gain of one by McGee on first down, Willis moved right and ran 69 yards for the second touchdown of the night at the 9:06 mark. Although the conversion attempt failed, Central now led 12-6.

Eight plays and a fake punt by Lexington returned the ball to Central when Willis broke through and stopped the Lexington player attempting to run the ball.

Central took over at the Lexington 47 yard line and had 12 plays before a fumble was recovered by Lexington.

With just over 30 seconds remaining, Lexington attempted two passes, which failed. The third pass attempt was good for a first down as John Castleman, Chapple and McGee made the tackle. Two more passes were deflected by McGee and Parker to end the game with Central winning 14-6.

Rebels dig early hole against Dresden

Dresden was the Weakley County middle school champion last season. From its performance Thursday night in McKenzie, the Lions may be on track to repeat the feat.
The Lions jumped on the junior Rebels early and handed them a 44-8 loss.

Two blocked punts in the first quarter led directly to Dresden scores and the Rebels could not exhume themselves from the deep hole they dug.

Trailing 20-0 in the second frame, the Rebels jumped back into the game with a nice nine-play, 66-yard scoring drive. McKenzie trailed 20-8 and seemed to be back into contention. But the Lions scored on a 62-yard trap play that essentially did in the Rebs.

"We looked like we woke up offensively before the half," said McKenzie coach George Ognibene. "But that over and under play right before the half broke our back."

The Lions controlled the front line and point of attack early. McKenzie managed 12 yards on its first possession but had to punt. Dresden's Matt Vallee broke through the MMS line and snuffed the kick attempt.

Dresden set up camp in the shadow of the Rebel goal post and scored three plays later, a 5-yard scamper from Matt Hewett with 2:56 to play. Hewett added the conversion run for the 8-0 lead.

Just 11 seconds in the second frame, Dresden's Joe Tyson blocked a punt and the Lions took over on the 50. From there, the Lions marched five plays to the end zone. Tyson canvassed 21 yards for the score and Dresden led 14-0.

Dresden turned an interception into eight more points just 58 seconds later. The Lions moved 43 yards in six plays, ending in Jacob Hatchel's 1-yard burst with 2:05 to play.

The Rebels answered when Jonathan Flippin broke 30 yards for the largest McKenzie gain of the night. His run landed the Rebels on the Lion 35. He carried four more times before his 1-yard run with :08 to play put McKenzie on the board. Derek Carr found Julian Tucker for the conversion pass and the Rebs had vaulted back into a manageable game.

But Hewett took things in his own hands on the next series, racing 62 yards for a devastating score.

A big kickoff return just after the half enabled Dresden to encroach deep into Rebel territory. It needed only three plays to span 27 yards. Matt Clements ran 11 yard for the score with 6:28. Matt Thomas added the PAT run and the Lions led 38-8. Dresden tacked on one more score with :04 to play.

"The good thing is that we got to play a lot of kids tonight," Ognibene said. "I think that will bode well for us this year."
The coach praised Dresden for its performance.

"We knew Hewett was a good player and Dresden was a good team. This was a good test for us," he said. "We don't have a lot of straight athletes, but we have hard workers and we're going to get better."

Dresden had 178 total yards and kept the ball for 15:17. McKenzie managed 98 total yards and had possession 16:43. The Rebels played Huntingdon on Tuesday night.
