For the second time this season, the Bethel College
Wildcats and Brescia University Bearcats played a hard
fought game that came down to the final possession. On
Tuesday night, the Bearcats gained some revenge on an
earlier season 73-70 loss to the Cats at Baker Fieldhouse
by defeating Bethel 66-63. In a low scoring first half,
Bethel took a 28-26 lead to the locker room. The second
half saw Brescia shoot a red-hot 64% from the field,
including 75% from three-point range. The Bearcat defense,
ranked #17 in NAIA Division I, held the Wildcat's top two
scorers (Matt Rooks and Myron McCrary) to a combined 14
points. Senior Steve Smith sparked the Cats offense by
hitting 9 of 10 attempts and ending the game with a game
high 20 points. Drew Woods tossed in 9 points and pulled
down 5 rebounds in the losing effort. Brescia was led by
Parker McCalister and Carlisle Green who each scored 16
points. David Phillips added 12 points and pulled down 12
rebounds. With the loss, the Wildcats (KIAC, Division
II) fall to 15-7 on the season, while Brescia (KIAC,
Division I) improves to 13-11. The Wildcats will be back
in action at Berea on Saturday.

McKenzie's Lady Rebels won a pair of games over the
past week, defeating Camden on Friday of last week and Big
Sandy this past Monday night. Both were road games. Last
Tuesday, they lost a heartbreaker to Milan in a district
match. The Rebels did not do as well, losing to both
Camden and Milan while defeating Big Sandy. On Tuesday,
January 29, the teams traveled to Milan for district
matches and the ladies fell behind with poor shooting in
the third and fourth periods and were unable to come back
in the fourth. Megan Bowlin led with seven points, while
Amanda Barnes added five, Julie Smith and Kristin Wiggins
scored three each, Becky Toombs and Sarah Hartz scored two
each and Jasmine McMackins and Jennifer Johnson scored one
each in their 33-24 loss. Milan led 9-7 after one, 18-10
at intermission and 24-14 after three. The Rebels
remained close in the first quarter, but fell further
behind with each period of play in their loss. Milan led
19-12 after one, 30-19 at intermission, 56-24 after three
and then won the game 71-40. Milan remained undefeated in
district action with the victory. Brandon Trull was the
only Rebel in double figures with 14 points. Bryan Huffman
and John French scored seven each, Jonathan Adkisson added
four, Chris Stephen and John Craig Howell scored three
each and Paul Edwards scored two. Huffman hit the only
three-pointer by a McKenzie player. Friday night, the
teams traveled to Camden. The Lions and Lady Lions were
celebrating homecomng and managed a victory in the second
game, but the Lady Rebels came out to win and by
intermission had a significant lead. The first quarter,
the Lady Rebels gained a 10-7 advantage as McMackins hit
the first of two three-pointers for the night and Bowlin
scored three to lead. Barnes and Toombs added two each.
The second quarter, Wiggins hit eight shots at the line to
lead while Johnson was four of four at the charity stripe.
By intermission, the Lady Rebels had a 26-11 advantage.
The second half, the Lady Rebels continued to outscore
Camden by added another 30 points to their totals while
the Lady Lions could muster only 18. At the end of three
quarter, McKenzie led 38-22 and then won the game 56-29.
Individually, three Lady Rebels were in double figures as
Barnes led with 12 total points, followed by Wiggins and
McMackins with 10 each. Bowlin had nine, Toombs and
Johnson scored four each, Mallory Brandon had three and
Smith and Hartz scored two each. The Lions came out
hitting very well in the first quarter, picking up a 26-8
lead after one. By intermission, Camden led 39-17. The
second half, scoring was close with McKenzie edging the
Lions 30-29 overall. Trull was the only Rebel in double
figures with 11 total points, followed by French with
eight, Adkisson with seven, Stephens with six, Huffman
with five, Ryan Drewry with four, and Robert Jones and
Daniel Duncan with three each. French had two three-point
shots while Huffman and Jones had one each in the loss.
Both teams gained victories in the non-district matches
with Big Sandy Monday night. The Lady Rebels took a 13-8
lead after one, but by intermission held a 28-15
advantage, led 48-28 after three and then won the game
64-33. Bowlin led with 16 total points, followed by Smith
with 11 and McMackins 10, including two shots from
three-point range. Toombs added eight for the night, Hope
Wyder and Barnes contributed six each, Brittany Russell
hit a three-pointer and scored five and Wiggins scored
two.
In the night's second game, the Rebels took an 11-3
lead after one, improved that margin to 27-7 at
intermission and then won the contest 50-38 after the Red
Devils improved their scoring margin in the second half by
scoring 31 to the Rebels 23. Once again Trull was the only
Rebel in double figures with 14 points, followed by
Adkisson with nine, Howell with six, Huffman, French,
Stephens and Duncan with four each, Jordan Trull with a
three-pointer and Drewry with two. Adkisson also
contributed a three-pointer for the Rebels.
The Rebels and Lady Rebels completed their season
Tuesday night in district games with Lexington as they
celebrated the final game by the Class of 2002. Seniors
were honored in pre-game ceremonies.

The Carroll Academy Jaguars gained their first district
victory Friday night at Big Sandy with a 52-50 victory
over the Red Devils. In the girls game, although all Big
Sandy players saw action and scored in their winning
effort over the Lady Jags, starters reentered the game the
final period to score 18 of their final 22 points to make
Big Sandy a 102-23 victor in that game.In the first game, Big Sandy took a 28-0 lead in the first
quarter and then improved their margin to 49-12. By the
end of three periods of play, Big Sandy led 80-18 before
their final score of 102-23. The Lady Red Devils placed
four players in double figures with Kendall Dodd and
Jessica Kennedy leading with 26 points each. Carroll
Academy was led by Danielle Holcer with eight while Renee
Lomax and Dominic Teague scored six each and Summer
Garriott added a three-pointer.
In the boys game, Carroll Academy led throughout their
contest, with a 20-12 advantage after one, a 30-26 lead at
intermission and a 43-38 lead after three. The Jags then
held on in the final quarter as Big Sandy hit four
three-pointers to gain a two-point victory, 52-50.
The Jags hit two three-pointers of their own in the final
period as Jerome Brown and Santini Foulkes hit nine for
the night and set a team record for Carroll Academy. All
of Brown's 15 points came from three-point range as he hit
two in the first period and one each in the following
three periods. Foulkes hit two in the first quarter, and
one in second and fourth periods. Foulkes led the Jags
with 19 total points, going three for four at the charity
stripe. George Easley also scored in double figures with
10 while Elvis Ray had six and Derrick McGehee scored two.
The Jags were three for five at the line for the night
while Big Sandy hit six of 12 attempts.
Thursday night, the Jags traveled to Riverside to meet the
Panthers and fell 58-44. Easley led the Jags in that
effort with 17 while Brown contributed 12 points overall
as Carroll Academy was very much in the game until the
second half. Ray had six, Kelby McClerkins scored four,
Foulkes added three and McGehee scored 2. Riverside led
11-7 after one, 22-20 at intermission and 41-31 after
three.

The application period for the spring turkey-hunting
season at Land Between the Lakes is drawing to a close.
The deadline for hunters to apply for a quota permit is
February 16 and hunt applications must be hand-delivered
or postmarked by that date. Hunters will be selected for
the available quota permits by computer drawing. All
applicants will be notified regarding selection or
rejection by March 25. The three quota hunts include: a
two-day youth hunt April 6-7; a two-day hunt April 9-10
and a two-day hunt April 13-14. For the youth hunt,
hunters must be 10-15 years old on the first day of the
hunt. The non-quota portion of the season will be April
15-28 and does not require prior application. For
additional information, please refer to the LBL Spring
Turkey Hunting Information Sheet that will be available
March 1. Quota turkey hunt applications are available at
the Golden Pond Visitor Center. Hunters may also request
