The McKenzie Middle School Rebels and Lady Rebels
traveled to Huntingdon last Thursday night for their final
regular season games. Going into the tournament
undefeated, the Rebels managed to gain a four-point
victory to remain in the unbeaten column while the Fillies
took a big win over the Lady Rebels to avenge an earlier
loss. Both the Fillies and Lady Rebels had one loss for
the season and a coin toss at the conclusion of the night
went in McKenzie's favor to give them the top seed in the
Carroll County Middle School Tournament being played this
week at Hollow Rock-Bruceton Central.
In the opening game, the Lady Rebels managed to remain
close for three quarters, but poor shooting in the fourth
period gave the Fillies the edge they needed for a
victory. The first period, the two teams scored evenly
with the Fillies going to the charity stripe for four of
their 10 points. McKenzie out shot the Fillies four
baskets to three from the field. Brooke Cole led McKenzie
with three while Courtney Creasy, Anna Trull and Jill
Taylor added two each. Payton Butler led the Fillies with
five, followed by Chasity Strayhorn and Courtney Henson
with two each and Ashley Porter with one. After one,
Huntingdon led 10-9. The second quarter, while neither
team scored well, the Lady Rebels gained a two-point edge
and led by one at intermission. Creasy and Cole led
McKenzie with three while Taylor added one. Henson led the
Fillies with four and Butler added one. At the half,
McKenzie led 16-15.
As the final period began, the Fillies came out hitting
much better and led by a narrow margin after three full
quarters of action. In the third quarter, Creasy and Cole
each had two for McKenzie while Butler led the Fillies
with six and Casey Henson scored two. After three,
Huntingdon led 23-20. The final period, Butler led the
Fillies with eight and Strayhorn added six and the Fillies
took a huge lead over the Lady Rebels. Courtney Wiggins
hit a three-pointer and Trull added three at the line as
Huntingdon won the game, 37-26.

In the night's second game, the Rebels had a slow start,
but by the end of the first half, held a lead they would
not relinquish. The first quarter, Drew Hayes scored all
four of McKenzie's points and Phillip Weathers hit two
three-pointers for Huntingdon's six points. After one,
Huntingdon led 6-4. The second period, Hayes hit a
three-pointer and led with four, followed by Beau Brown
and Hunter Downing with two each. Brent Taylor scored two
and Octavious Strayhorn added one for the Mustangs as
McKenzie took a 12-9 lead into intermission.
The second half, both teams struggled to score, but the
Rebels maintained an edge. The third period, Brice
Priestley led with three points, followed by Downing with
two and Hayes with one. Chris Donald scored four for
Huntingdon. After three, McKenzie led 18-13. The final
period, the Rebels ultimately won the contest by hitting
six of six at the line. Hayes led with eight points,
including four of four at the line. Greg Pruitt hit both
of his opportunities at the line. Strayhorn hit a
three-pointer and led Huntingdon with five, followed by J.
J. Carter, Weather, and Donald with two each. McKenzie won
the game, 28-24.

Games continued in the Huntingdon Point Guard Christmas
Tournament on Friday and Saturday with Huntingdon and
Hollow Rock-Bruceton boys and girls competing and McKenzie
boys playing one final game. The results of games
involving county teams were as follows:Hollow Rock-Bruceton Lady Tigers 34-Waverly 65
In an early game on Thursday afternoon, the Hollow
Rock-Bruceton Lady Tigers met Waverly. The game found
Waverly in control throughout with the Lady Tigers
struggling from the floor and hitting 50 percent at the
line. Kathy Doupis hit three shots from three-point range
and led Central with 13 points. Bianca Jamison and Meagen
Sturdivant scored six points each while Whitney Owens
added five and Alyssa Jackson hit a three and scored four
points. Waverly took a 21-5 lead after one, led 35-16 at
intermission and then ultimately won the contest 65-34.
The final three games played on Friday involved McKenzie's
Rebels and the Huntingdon Fillies and Mustangs. Results of
those games were as follows:
McKenzie Rebels 74-Clinch Wildcats 50
The Rebels scored evenly throughout their game as they hit
well from the field while the Wildcats struggled after the
first period. The first quarter, the Rebels and Wildcats
were both hitting well from the field. Brandon Trull led
all scorers with eight big points, followed by Rory Lacey
with four, Bryan Huffman with a three-pointer, Johnathon
Adkisson with three and John French with two. After one,
McKenzie led 20-15. The second period, the Rebels took
control of the game with Trull again leading with seven
points. Lacey hit two shots from three-point range for
six, French hit a three-pointer and Adkisson and Ryan
Drewry scored two each. At intermission, McKenzie led
40-29.
The third quarter, the Rebels continued to score well and
improved their lead. Lacey hit two additional
three-pointers and led with eight points, followed by John
Howell with a three-pointer, Huffman with three, Drewry
and French with two each and Trull with one. After three,
McKenzie led 59-39. As all players began to see action,
the Rebels still outscored the Wildcats. Lacey hit two
three-pointers for six, followed by French with a
three-pointer and five total points. Clint Anderson hit
two of two at the line and Howell had a two-pointer from
the field. McKenzie won the game, 74-50.

Huntingdon Fillies 36-Friendship Christian 34
The Huntingdon Fillies won a close game over Friendship
Christian, giving the Lady Commandos their first loss of
the season. Throughout the game, the score remained close
and was ultimately decided at the charity stripe where the
Fillies were seven of 11 (six of eight the final period).
The first quarter, the Fillies took a 10-9 advantage as
Lakeah Lockhart led with four points, followed by Ashley
Lockhart, Brandi Melton and Crystal Fuller with two each.
The second period, neither team was able to score well and
the Lady Commandos tied the game at 15 by intermission.
Melton and Kodia Tharpe scored two each while Waneca
Melton added one at the line.
In the third period, Friendship outscored the Fillies six
to two to take a 31-17 lead into the final period. Fuller
scored the only two points for the Fillies. The final
period, Fuller led all scorers with six, including two of
two at the line. Brooke Pritchard hit a three-pointer and
scored five total points. L. Lockhart added four, B.
Melton scored two and W. Melton was two of two at the
line. Huntingdon won the game, 36-34.

Huntingdon Mustangs 39-Friendship Christian Commandos

The final county game for the night was between the
Mustangs and Commandos with the Mustangs hanging in for
the first half and then losing momentum the final half in
their loss. The first quarter, Keanon McKinnie and Robert
Weathers each hit a three-pointer while Kenneth Hillsman
had a three-point play and Justin Truett scored two. After
one, the game was tied at 11. The second period, McKinnie,
Truett, John Thomas, Cary Hayes and Kenneth Porter each
scored two as the Commandos took a 26-21 lead into
intermission.
The second half, the Commandos scored 25 additional points
to the Stangs 18 for the victory. The third quarter,
Terrence Bell hit a three-pointer, while McKinnie and
Thomas had two each. After three, Friendship led 39-28.
The final period, Alex Jordan hit a three-pointer and led
with five points while Truett, Weathers and Porter scored
two each. Friendship won the contest 51-39.

Saturday's games concluded the tournament with
Huntingdon's Mustangs and Hollow Rock-Bruceton's Lady
Tigers and Tigers playing the final three games of the
night.
Huntingdon Mustangs 66-Clinch Wildcats 40
In the final game for Huntingdon, they had little
difficulty in gaining an edge and improving their lead as
the game progressed for the victory.
The first quarter, the Stangs took a 19-10 edge as
McKinnie and Truett each hit a three-pointer and led with
five points each. Jordan scored four while Hillsman and
Weathers scored two each and Hayes added one. The second
period, the Stangs added twenty points to their total
while Clinch was able to connect for only eight. Jordan
led with six points while Bell scored four. McKinnie,
Hillsman, Truett, Hayes and Clint Kee added two each. At
intermission, Huntingdon led 39-18.
The second half, the Stangs continued to score well,
leading to early substitutions in the final period. The
third quarter, Hillsman led with seven points, followed by
Jordan with four, Truett with two and Weathers and Hayes
with one each. After three, Huntingdon led 54-28. The
final period, Jordan led with five, followed by Weathers,
Blake Hampton and Garrett Meggs with two each and Desmond
Townes with one. Huntingdon won the game, 66-40.

In the next to last game of the night, the Lady Tigers
were outmatched by Crockett County, a Class AAA squad.
The first quarter, the Lady Tigers remained close and were
able to score fairly well. However, the Lady Cavs were
scoring much better and hit three of three at the line
while the Lady Tigers hit their only opportunity at the
line as well. Doupis hit two shots from three-point range
and led with eight points, followed by Owens with five and
Sturdivant with two. After one, Crockett County led 24-15.
Although the Lady Tigers continued to score as well as
they had in the first quarter, the Lady Cavs doubled their
lead easily. Owens led with 10 total points while
Sturdivant hit two shots on a technical against the Lady
Cavs and scored three. Jackson, Jamison and Hannah Kee
scored one each. At intermission, Crockett County led
51-31.
The second half, the Lady Tigers faltered in the third
quarter and although they improved their shooting skills
the final period, were unable to chip away at the lead
against them. The third quarter, Jackson and Owens scored
two points each as Crockett County's lead improved to
69-35. The final period, Doupis led with four points,
followed by Sturdivant, Kee and Owens with two each as
Crockett County won the game, 77-45.

The Tigers played an outstanding game against their Class
AAA opponent, but in the end, the loss of three starters
to fouls in the final period hurt them enormously. Patrick
Willis had an outstanding night, hitting four shots from
three-point range and scoring 35 total points for the
Tigers. The first quarter, Willis led with seven points,
followed by Billy Doupis with five, including a
three-pointer. Terry Parker added two and Michael Aldridge
scored one. After one, Crockett County led 20-15. The
second period, the Tigers chipped away at the lead early
and led by one at one point. However, the Cavs hit
three-pointers and were five of eight at the line. Willis
led the Tigers with seven, followed by Parker with four,
Daryl Prater with two and Kerry Hunt with one. At
intermission, the Cavs led 33-29.
The third quarter, the Tigers took control, outscoring the
Cavaliers 24 to 11 and led 53-44 after three. Willis hit
two threes and scored 12 total points, followed by
Aldridge with a three-pointer and seven total points. Hunt
had a three-point play and scored five. The final period,
the Cavs scored the first 14 points to retake the lead and
gained a nine-point lead before the Tigers battled back.
Willis hit a three-pointer and led with nine points,
followed by Rick Sturdivant, Bryan Baker, and Prater with
two each and Hunt with one. Crockett County won the game,
75-69.
