Lady Rebels Defeat Milan, Rebels Win Game With Camden

The Rebels and Lady Rebels hosted two district games last week, with the Lady Rebels winning their contest over Milan and losing by a small margin to Camden. The Rebels won their game over Camden by a significant margin while falling to Milan.

On Tuesday night, the Lady Rebels came out hitting well and continued to mount a sizeable lead over the Lady Bulldogs. The first quarter, Becky Toombs led the Lady Rebels with five points, followed by Meagan Bowlin and Amanda Barnes with four each. After one, McKenzie led 15-6. The second quarter, Kristin Wiggins led all scorers with nine for McKenzie, followed by Toombs, Jasmine McMackins and Barnes with two each and Bowlin with one. At intermission, McKenzie led 29-17.

In the second half, the Lady Rebels continued to score evenly and maintained a good edge over the Lady Dogs. The third quarter, Barnes led the Lady Rebels with four, followed by McMackins with a three-pointer, and Bowlin, Julie Smith and Toombs with two each. After three, McKenzie led 42-21. The final period, Renee Crawley led with five, followed by Smith with a three-pointer, and Bowlin and Wiggins with two each. McKenzie won the game 54-34.

In the night's second game, the Rebels were unable to keep up with the Bulldogs as they lost by a significant margin. The first quarter, John French led with a three-point play, followed by Rory Lacey with two and Johnathon Adkisson with one. After one, Milan led 13-6. The second quarter Lacey hit a three-pointer and led with five points, followed by Brandon Trull with four, Adkisson with three, and Bryan Huffman with two. At intermission, Milan led 31-20.

The final half, the Bulldogs improved their margin slightly for the win. The third quarter, John Howell hit a three-pointer and led with five total points, while Lacey added two. After three, McKenzie trailed 43-27. The final period, Lacey led with six points, followed by Trull with five and Adkisson and Chris Stephens with two each. Milan won the game 67-42.

Friday night, Camden's Lions and Lady Lions came to the MHS gym for district games. Although the Lady Lions led most of the game, the Lady Rebels had an opportunity to win the contest, but poor shooting at the line contributed to their loss as they hit only 12 of 21 opportunities, with three the front end of the one and one. The first quarter, Toombs led the Lady Rebels with four, followed by McMackins with a three-pointer and Smith with two. After one, Camden led 14-9. The second quarter, the Lady Rebels scored better and took a slight lead into intermission. McMackins hit two shots from three-point range and led with six, followed by Bowlin with four, Smith with a three-pointer, Wiggins with three, Sarah Hartz with two and Toombs with one. At intermission, McKenzie led 28-26.

The second half, the Lady Lions came out hitting better and took a lead by the end of three. McKenzie was led in third period scoring by Bowlin with four, followed by Barnes and Toombs with two each. After three, Camden led 40-36. The final period, the Lady Rebels had a 6-0 run to take a 42-40 lead and then led 44-42 with a minute and a half remaining. However, turnovers and fouls which resulted in six straight points at the line for the Lady Lions handed the Lady Rebels a 48-44 loss.

In the night's second game the Rebels held control throughout by hitting well at the line and from the field. The first quarter, Lacey led with six points, followed by French with a three-pointer and Trull, Adkisson and Ryan Drewry with two each. After one, McKenzie led 15-8. The second quarter, Lacey hit a three-pointer and led with 10 points, followed by Huffman with two three-pointers for six points. Trull scored four, Adkisson scored three and French hit a three-pointer. At intermission, McKenzie led 41-25.

The second half, the Rebels continued to score well and improved their margin. The third quarter, Trull led all scorers with 17 total points, followed by Lacey with six. After three, McKenzie led 64-44. The final period, Trull added six and Adkisson one as McKenzie won the game, 71-54.

  Lady Rebels, Mustangs Win County Middle School Titles

The Carroll County Middle School Basketball Tournament was held this past week at the Hollow Rock-Bruceton Central High School gymnasium with McKenzie and Huntingdon eliminating all teams and vying for the two county titles. In the girls contest, the Lady Rebels managed to secure one more title while the previously undefeated Rebels fell to Huntingdon in the boys' game.

The games were played on Monday, Thursday and Saturday nights this year in order to allow fans to see high school games as well. Monday, the West Carroll Lady War Eagles were defeated by Clarksburg, the War Eagles defeated the Tigers of Hollow Rock-Bruceton and the Fillies eliminated the Hollow Rock-Bruceton Lady Tigers.

Game 1
Lady War Eagles 20, Lady Rockets 32

The opening game found the Lady War Eagles leading throughout the first half and the Lady Rockets coming back to claim the second half and the victory behind Erin Grant's 16 big second half points. The first quarter, Lucinda Weatherford led the Lady War Eagles with a three-pointer and four total points while Sarah McGowan added three. Brooke Cary scored Clarksburg's two points. After one, West Carroll led 7-2. The second period, Brandi Lykes led the Lady War Eagles with four points, followed by McGowan and Weatherford with two each. Jamie Pritchard scored Clarksburg's two points as West Carroll took a 15-4 lead into intermission.

The second half, the Lady Rockets scored 12 unanswered points to take a 16-15 lead. They also scored the final 12 points of the game for the victory. The third quarter, Grant led all scorers with eight big points, followed by Pritchard with six and Cary with two. McGowan scored two and Lykes one for the Lady War Eagles. After three, Clarksburg led 20-18. The final period, as four of West Carroll's starting players fouled out, the Lady Rockets scored well. Brittney Luther hit two of two at the line for West Carroll's two points while Grant scored eight and Rebecca McDaniel added four to the Lady Rockets total. Clarksburg won the game, 32-20.

Game 2
War Eagles 41-Tigers 34

The night's second game found the War Eagles in charge throughout their contest. The first quarter, West Carroll took an 11-5 lead as five War Eagles put points on the board. Destin Skinner hit a three-pointer while David Jackson, Cord Coleman, Jonathan Triplett and Alex Johnson scored two each. Michael Weatherford scored three to lead Hollow Rock-Bruceton while Jeremy Lowe scored two. The second quarter, both teams added eight points to their totals. Jackson, Andrew Newtson, Coleman and Neco Kirby scored two each for West Carroll. Russell Noles led the Tigers with four, followed by Tanner Stepp and Weatherford with two each. At intermission, West Carroll led 19-13.

The second half, the two teams scored evenly with West Carroll adding 22 points to their total and the Tigers added 21. The War Eagles improved their margin significantly by scoring well in the third quarter. Triplett hit two three-point shots to lead with six, followed by Kirby with four and Coleman, Antwane Bell and Johnson with two each. Lowe led the Tigers with six, followed by Weatherford with two. After three, West Carroll led 35-21. The final period, the Tigers were able to narrow the margin slightly by outscoring the War Eagles. Weatherford hit a three-pointer as he and Stepp led with six each, followed by Dustin Neely with one. Bell led the War Eagles with four and Johnson scored two as West Carroll won the game 41-34.

Fillies 41-Lady Tigers 14

In the night's third game, the Fillies commanded a good lead throughout their game for the victory. The first quarter, Courtney Henson and Casey Henson each led with five points with Casey hitting a three-pointer, followed by Payton Butler with four and Ashley Porter with two. Ernicka Willis scored three and Tiffany Taylor two for the Lady Tigers. After one, Huntingdon led 16-5. The second quarter, Courtney Henson hit a three-pointer and led the Fillies with seven, followed by Butler with six. Alyssa Malacara led the Lady Tigers with three while Katie Huff and Willis scored two each. At intermission, Huntingdon led 29-12.

The third quarter, Courtney Henson and Butler each scored four for the Fillies while Ashley Harrison scored two for the Lady Tigers. After three, Huntingdon led 37-14. The final period, Butler and Candace Hampton each scored two for Huntingdon while Brianna Stevens added two for the Lady Tigers. Huntingdon won the game, 41-16.

Game 4
Mustangs 42-Rockets 29

In the first game Thursday, the Mustangs took the initial lead over the Rockets and then improved their margin throughout for the victory. The first quarter, Huntingdon's Chris Donald led all scorers with eight big points for the Stangs, followed by J. J. Carter with a three-pointer and Phillip Weathers with two. Brandon Smith hit a three-pointer, Justin Pierpoint scored three and Scott Luther scored two. After one, Huntingdon led 13-8. The second quarter, Weathers hit two shots from three-point range and led Huntingdon with eight, followed by Cody Crocker with three and Octavious Strayhorn with two. Cody Scott scored two for the Rockets as Huntingdon took a 26-10 lead into intermission.

The second half, the Stangs continued to score well and the Rockets scored better. The third quarter, Donald led Huntingdon with four, followed by Carter, Justin Johns and Strayhorn with two each and Brent Taylor with one. Brandon Smith hit a three-pointer, Pierpoint scopred three, and Scott and Justin Bolen scored two each for the Rockets. After three, Huntingdon led 37-20. The final period, Smith hit a three-pointer and led Clarksburg with five while Luther and Pierpoint scored two each. Strayhorn led Huntingdon with three and Donald added two as Huntingdon won the game, 42-29.

In the night's second game, the two teams began slowly, but by the end of the first period, McKenzie held a 14-0 lead over the Lady Rockets as Courtney Wiggins and Brooke Cole scored four each, followed by Courtney Creasy, Anna Trull and Jill Taylor with two each. The second quarter, Wiggins led the Lady Rebels with six points, followed by Cole with four. Amanda Renfroe scored on a three-point shot, followed by Erin Grant with two. At intermission, McKenzie led 24-5.

The second half, the Lady Rebels continued to score well and improved their margin. The third quarter, Creasy led the Lady Rebels with six, followed by Trull with a three-pointer and five points and Cole and Taylor with two each. Grant led the Lady Rockets with four while Rebecca McDaniel scored two. After three, McKenzie led 39-11. The final period, the Lady Rockets narrowed the margin with an 8-4 run. Grant hit a three-pointer and led Clarksburg with five, followed by McDaniel with two and Jamie Pritchard with one. Laken Comer and Taylor scored two each for the Lady Rebels. McKenzie won the game, 43-19.

Game 6
Rebels 26-War Eagles 21 (overtime)

The final game of the night had fans on their feet as the Rebels and War Eagles played a very close game that ultimately went into overtime. The first quarter, McKenzie took a 10-8 lead as Beau Brown and Brice Priestley each hit a three-pointer to lead while Drew Hayes and Greg Pruitt scored two each. Cord Coleman led the War Eagles with four, followed by two each from Neco Kirby and Alex Johnson. The second quarter, the teams continued to score evenly with David Jackson scoring all four of the War Eagles points and Hunter Downing and Jake Brown scoring two each for the Rebels. At intermission, the Rebels led 14-12.

Both teams struggled to score in the second half, but by the end of regulation they were tied at 21. The third quarter, B. Brown hit a three-pointer and scored five for the Rebels. Coleman hit a three-pointer for the War Eagles. After three, McKenzie led 19-15. The final quarter, Hayes scored two for the Rebels while Coleman scored five and Johnson added one for the War Eagles to send the game into overtime. During overtime, the Rebels scored all five points with Hayes having a three-point play and B. Brown scoring two of two at the line. McKenzie won the game, 26-21.

Huntingdon and McKenzie vie for 2002 championships. Both games were nip and tuck throughout although in the boys' title game, the Mustangs gained an edge in the third quarter and hung on for a significant victory. In the opening game, numerous fouls called against the Fillies sent their three top scorers to the bench early.

Game 7
Lady Rebels 39-Fillies 36

The championship game between the Fillies and Lady Rebels was very physical with numerous fouls called against both teams. However the Fillies had more called against them and three Fillies fouled out of the game. The first quarter, the Fillies were hitting better and took a 9-5 lead. Casey Henson hit a three-pointer while Payton Butler, Chasity Strayhorn and Ashley Porter scored two each for the Fillies. Courtney Wiggins led McKenzie with four while Courtney Creasy scored one at the line. The second quarter, as several Fillies had to sit out for several minutes due to foul problems, the Lady Rebels came back and took a one-point lead by intermission. Wiggins and Anna Trull led the Lady Rebels with four points each, followed by Brooke Cole with three and Jill Taylor with two. Butler led the Fillies with seven points, followed by Porter with one. At intermission, McKenzie led 18-17.

The second half, fouls and missed foul shots made a big difference in the outcome of the game. As the Fillies committed fouls, the Lady Rebels managed to hit 11 (of 15 total) of 16 (24 total) attempts in the final period. The Fillies went to the line only one time and hit one the final half. The third quarter, the Fillies came out hitting well and again took the lead as Henson hit a three-pointer and led with seven, followed by Butler and Strayhorn with four each. Butler fouled out just before the end of the third period. Creasy led the Lady Rebels with five and Wiggins added two as Huntingdon took a 32-25 lead into the final period. Strayhorn fouled out of the game at the 5:36 mark and Henson at the 3:40 mark of the final period with Henson scoring on a three-pointer and Porter hitting one at the line. The Lady Rebels were led by Trull with seven (five of six at the line), Wiggins with three (one of two at the line), and Creasy and Cole with two of two at the line. McKenzie won the game, 39-36.

Those making the team were as follows: Courtney Creasy, Brooke Cole, Anna Trull and Courtney Wiggins from McKenzie; Payton Butler, Chasity Strayhorn, Courtney Henson and Casey Henson from Huntingdon; Heaven Wilks and Ernicka Willis from Hollow Rock-Bruceton and Jamie Pritchard and Erin Grant from Clarksburg.

Game 8
Mustangs 33-Rebels 25

In the boys championship game, both teams had their problems scoring, but fouls played no big part in the contest. The first quarter, the teams scored evenly with the Rebels scoring four of their points at the line. Drew Hayes, Greg Pruitt and Beau Brown each scored two for the Rebels. Chris Donald led the Mustangs with four while Octavious Strayhorn scored two. After one, the game was tied at six. The second quarter, the teams continued to score evenly as Huntingdon took a one-point edge into intermission. Brown hit a three-pointer, Hunter Downing scored three and Brice Priestley added two for the Rebels. Phillip Weathers scored five for the Stangs while Donald and Strayhorn scored two each. At intermission, Huntingdon led 15-14.

The second half, the Stangs began by hitting well and took a significant lead. Brent Taylor hit a three-pointer and led with five, followed by J. J. Carter with a three-point play and Donald and Strayhorn with two each. Hayes, Downing and Priestley scored two each for the Rebels. After three, Huntingdon led 27-20. The final period, Donald, Taylor and Strayhorn scored two each for Huntingdon while Pruitt led McKenzie with three and Hayes added two. Huntingdon won the game, 33-25.
