Four McKenzie High School Rebels made first team All West
Tennessee while seven others were named honorable mention
in the Jackson Sun's annual picks for Class A-AA this past
week. Mr. Football and Hollow Rock-Bruceton Tiger Adrian
Jamison was named Offensive Player of the Year for the
second time in his prep career.Josh Stenberg, Mitchell
Hall, Jeremy Sydnor and David Duncan led the Rebels named
to the All West Tennessee team. All seniors, Stenberg was
recognized as a linebacker who had 121 tackles, 11 for a
loss, two interceptions, one caused fumble and one pass
breakup. He also rushed for 876 yards and 18 touchdowns in
2001. Hall was recognized as a tight end who had 14
receptions for 305 yards and two touchdowns. He also had
65 tackles and caused three fumbles as a
linebacker/defensive end. Sydnor was recognized for his
work on the offensive line as he helped to block for the
offensive which combined for more than 4,900 total yards
in 2001. Duncan was recognized as a defensive back. He
made 55 tackles, two for a loss, had seven pass breakups,
five interceptions and caused a fumble. He scored nine
touchdowns on offense. Receiving honorable mention were
Taylor Holland, Jonathan Adkisson, Ricky Mathis, Shiron
Perkins, Brannon Milton, Justin Adkisson and Howard Nolen.
Adrian Jamison was a three year finalist for the Mr.
Football award and won the honor for 2001. He also set 17
Hollow Rock-Bruceton school records including career, all
purpose touchdowns (110), single season all purpose
touchdowns (38) and the most 200 yard rushing games (10).
In his career at Central High he rushed for 7,710 yards
and 103 touchdowns over a four year period. As a senior he
rushed for 2,139 total yards and scored 30 touchdowns.
Named to the first team was Patrick Willis, a junior
linebacker who made 155 tackles, had four sacks, 18
tackles for a loss and three interceptions. He also caught
30 passes for 529 yards and 10 touchdowns in 2001. Named
honorable mention were Rick Sturdivant, Jonte Willis and
Adam Olds.
Senior Keanon McKinnie was the only Mustang named to
the first team. Named as a defensive lineman, McKennie had
65 tackles, 16 for a loss, nine sacks and caused two
fumbles. He was named region defensive MVP and scored 15
touchdowns offensively in 2001. Named to the honorable
mention squad were Jacob Smothers, Robert Weathers, Alex
Jordan, Will Fisher and Marc Brown.
West Carroll had four players named to the honorable
mention squad. they were Don Bukovi, Drew Cunningham,
Brian Forrest and James Terry.
Gleason had two players named to the honorable mention
squad. They were Aaron Vaughn and David Forrest.

Participating in the Bahamas Sunshine Shootout on December
19-21, the Lady Cats fell in their first two games to
Xavier, ranked 17th and Saint Xavier University before
winning their final game over Davis & Elkins College.In
the opening game against Xavier, poor shooting was
responsible for the loss as the Lady Cats were defeated
71-55 in the first round. They shot only 29.5 percent from
the floor and were unable to overcome a 16-point deficit
at intermission.
Kayla McSweeney led Bethel with 10 points while Natasha
Payne had eight, Abree Haddock scored seven, Jennifer
Oxley scored six, Kelli Rich and Jaquilla Pigue added five
each, Bethany Flowers scored four, Wendi Davis and Lynne
Moody scored three each and Tracie Coltharp and Becky
Hanks scored two each .
In the second game, against Saint Xavier University,
the Lady Cats continued to shoot poorly with a 25.4
percent shooting from the floor. The score was 72-51 in
favor of Saint Xavier. In the first half, shooting just
17.2 percent led to a 29-20 lead for Saint Xavier. Hanks
was the scoring leader with 12 points while Pigue added
11. Other points came from Payne, Jennifer Donald and
Davis with six each, McSweeney with five, Oxley and Rich
with two each and Elisha Wasniowski with one.
In their final game, the Lady Cats finally put together
a solid game and brought home a victory over Davis &
Elkins College, winning 58-42. Three Lady Cats were in
double figures with Rich gaining 14, Pigue scoring 13 and
Donald added 10. McSweeney added eight points, four
rebounds and three steals in the victory, and was named to
the All Tournament Team.
Bethel took control of this game and led all the way
with a 28-20 advantage at intermission. They shot 44
percent in the second half and were 19 of 24 at the
charity stripe. Hanks added six, Payne had four and
Haddock scored three for the night.
Following their Christmas break, the Lady Cats will
return to action on January 5 as they host Blue Mountain
College with a 1:00 p.m. game time at Baker Fieldhouse. |
