The Carroll County Aquatic Team opened its 2002 summer
season with three swim meets in June. CCAT traveled to
Murray, Kentucky on Friday, June 14 and then hosted a meet
against Calvert City, Kentucky Country Club at Bethel's
Gaines Pool on Saturday, June 22 before competing in
Marion, Kentucky on Tuesday, June 25. CCAT swimmers
claimed forty-one first place finishes in individual
events and won sixteen relays in the three meets.In the
Girls 5-6 age division, Hannah Harris won two freestyle
and two backstroke races and added one first place in a
breaststroke and a butterfly event as well while Jenny-Lyn
Caterina swam to third place finishes in the backstroke,
freestyle and breaststroke.
The Girls 7-8 age group was led by Kelsey Carr, who
fished first in four events, freestyle, backstroke,
breaststroke, and butterfly and also earned three second
place ribbons. Other high placers in this age group were
Kayla Kirkland, third in the backstroke and fourth in the
individual medley; Candace Ridley, second in the freestyle
and fourth in the medley; Allison McMahan, second in the
butterfly and fourth in the breaststroke; Haley Collins,
fourth in the freestyle and the butterfly and Hannah
Rorer, fifth in the backstroke and the freestyle.
Austin Petering picked up five first place ribbons in
the Boys 7-8 division, while Samantha Verdell collected
firsts in eleven events and second place in four others
for the 9-10 girls. Crystal Doub added a second place
finish in the freestyle and two third place finishes.
Megan Ellis swam to fourth place in the individual medley
and Alexa Cooper was fourth in the butterfly. Conor
Scruton paced the 9-10 boys, winning six races and placing
second in eight others. Patrick Harris was second in the
freestyle and the breaststroke and also placed third in
three events. Cody Prince finished fourth in the
backstroke, the breaststroke, and the butterfly.
Hannah Scruton led Girls 11-12 by winning three events
and placing second in three others; Chloe Cunningham added
a second place in the backstroke and two third place
finishes while Sarah Sutherby picked up fifth place in the
individual medley. In the Boys 11-12 division, Josh Rich
swam to first in the freestyle, breaststroke and
butterfly. Shane McFadden had four second place finishes
and Aaron Hoskins earned a second place in the backstroke
and breaststroke.
Chase Mitchell was the top CCAT swimmer in the Boys
13-14 category, winning five races and added four second
place ribbons. Nathan Hacker finished second in four
events and Traven Parkhill took fourth place in three
races. Desiree Petering was second in the Girls 13-14
100-Meter Freestyle and swam to second place in two other
events.
Shante Hacker took a first place in the butterfly and
was second in five other events for the Girls 15-Over,
while Ashley Martin finished fourth in four events.
The Carroll County Aquatic Team will host meets at
Gaines Pool in July and will be singing up swimmers ages
five to eighteen for the 2002-2003 winter season later
this year. Watch for announcements in October and come
swim with CCAT.

McKenzie's 11-12-year olds opened area action Monday night
at McKenzie Recreation Park against Huntingdon. The game
was close until the fourth inning when the Huntingdon all
stars had several hits, including a homerun to improve
their margin and ultimately win the game. McKenzie played
Humboldt on Tuesday night with the winner advancing to
district action in Huntingdon. That series will begin
Saturday night. McKenzie's All Starts are coached by Terry
Reeder, Clay Kirk and Chris Winstead. Players are pictured

The first annual Bethel College Summer Tennis Open,
held June 19-23 at Veteran's Park in Huntingdon, drew over
60 participants in 95 division entries.
The winners of the events included: Boys 14-under
Singles: Nicholas Swift (Jackson, TN) defeated Ryan Swift
(Jackson); Girl's 15-18 Singles: Ashley Jones (Martin)
defeated Jill Foster (Huntingdon); Boy's 15-18 Singles:
Luis Yanez (El Paso, TX) defeated Bryan Almond (Mayfield,
KY); Boy's 15-18 Doubles: Bryan Almond/C.J. Boyd
(Mayfield, KY) defeated Andrew Bateman (McKenzie)/Luis
Yanez (El Paso); Men's Open Singles: Luis Yanez (El Paso)
defeated Bob Davis (Savannah); Men's Open Doubles: Scott
Schweitzer (McKenzie)/Jonathan Wood (Bowling Green, KY)

"I'm very happy with the turnout of the tournament,"
stated Matt Floyd, Tournament Director. "For a first year
tournament, we had a great response. I'm hoping to build
these summer tournaments up to encourage more youngsters
to play tennis in our area."
The tournament drew players from all over the state of
Tennessee, Kentucky and Texas. The Wildcat tennis program
plans to have another tournament in August. The second
annual Wildcat Tennis Classic is preliminarily set for
August 14-18. |
