McKenzie track team members Julie Smith and Sarah Hartz
continued to perform well as they competed at the state
level in the Spring Fling recently. Smith, a junior,
reached the state competition in the discus by winning at
the regional level. At the state level, her best throw was
92 feet which gave her fifth place overall. Hartz, a
sophomore, ran 227 in the 800 meter, her best time ever.
Both girls are members of the Lady Rebel basketball
team and Smith also ran cross-country last year. Both are
also good students who take academics as seriously as
their athletic endeavors.
Coach David Duncan praised both girls for their success
at the state level, noting that while they were the only
two entrants, their high finishes gave McKenzie a 24th
overall finish of all the teams represented at the state
meet.
Coach Duncan is hoping that more MHS students will
compete at the state level in 2003 and acknowledged that
the students continue to work hard to improve their times
and/or distances in all events. |
